1 Waller weekly news 4 august 2017 Two impressive wins at Rosehill capped another brilliant season for the team with D argento and Vaucluse Bay saluting in impressive style. Both promise bigger and better things for their connections this season as does our other winner for the week Sexy Eyes, who broke maiden ranks on debut at the provincials. This week in New Zealand the first two year old trials were won with a filly by former stable star Zoustar winning her heat impressively. Also in New Zealand this week, Preferment was on parade on Sunday and drew plenty of praise as he has let down into an impressive individual in a similar mold to his champion sire Zabeel. A $190,000 Mulcaster Bloodstock buy for the stable at Karaka, he took us all on a great ride that included four Group One victories, a trip to Hong Kong and we now look forward to following him in his next chapter at Brighthill Farm. 2 l CHRIS WALLER RACING - WINNERS THIS WEEK D Argento 3yo C So You Think - Fullazz by Redoute s Choice This striking grey son of So You Think kept his unbeaten record intact when making it two wins from as many starts when winning at Rosehill on Saturday over 1500m. Hugh Bowman was on board D argento and he settled him towards the rear of the field early on and he travelled strongly throughout. As they turned into the straight Bowman angled up on the outside of the front runners to make his challenge and the partnership hit the front inside the final furlong before showing a willing attitude to hold off the runner up who kicked strongly in the straight. vaucluse bay 4yo G Al Maher - Power of Love by Bahhare This likeable sort made it back to back Rosehill victories when winning over 2000m at his home track on Saturday. The son of Al Maher was alloted 53kg so lightweight jockey Corey Brown was engaged for the mount and he gave him a dream trip throughout just behind the speed. Once asked for maximum effort inside the final furlong Vaucluse Bay sprinted into a gap between runners and careered away for an effortless success scoring by a widening four lengths at the finish. He is improving with every start and looks a very promising stayer for connections. sexy eyes 4yo F Written Tycoon - Hidden Savings by Secret Savings This daughter of boom sire Written Tycoon made the best possible start to her racing career when winning on debut at Gosford on Saturday over 1100m. Chad Lever took the mount and he bided his time early on allowing her to settle at the rear of the field before coming with a sustained challenge down the outside of the track in the straight. This striking filly let down with a smart turn of foot to hit the front inside the final furlong to sprint away for an exciting victory scoring by over three lengths at the finish in the Magic Bloodstock colours which are of course worn by the mighty mare Winx. 3 l So You Think He s a Star Dashing grey So You Think colt D'Argento kept his unbeaten record intact and stamped himself as a spring stakes prospect with a stylish victory at Rosehill on Saturday for the powerful Chris Waller stable. A debut winner at Newcastle on July 15 over 1200 metres, D'Argento made a swift transition to Saturday grade and relished the step up to 1500 metres to score a powerful neck win with champion jockey Hugh Bowman in the saddle. "He felt pretty good from where I was sitting," Bowman said. "He's got a bit of growing up to do mentally but physically he's the real deal.'' Bowman was of the opinion we will see the best of D'argento in time. "I came out early because the pace had slackened," he said. "There was a nice tempo mid-race but the pace slackened and I don't feel he's a sit and sprint type, I think he's a horse that's going to improve as he gets over even further, so I didn't want to be sitting back spotting them six lengths. "He's got a bit of growing up to do mentally. He's not as straight forward as some horses are at this stage of their life but considering he's got the pedigree to get over further I think it's very encouraging." Chris Waller was impressed with the victory and will now consider which path to take with the rising three-year-old heading into the spring carnival. "He didn't win by a big margin but I don't think that's very important. It's all about the experience and helping him improve," Waller said. "It'd be easy to target races like the Gloaming and Spring Champion but my gut tells me maybe to wait for a Carbine Club at the end of the spring." A $135,000 Magic Millions purchase for Star Thoroughbreds from the Baramul Stud draft, D'Argento is the fourth winner from stakes-winning Redoute's Choice mare Fullazz, who owes her grey colouring to the sire of her dam, renowned grey shuttle sire Kenmare (Fr). It's a speed female family that features Group I winner Sizzling, so one would think races of around a mile to possibly a mile and a quarter would be optimum for D'Argento as his career unfolds. D'Argento is bred on the same cross as So You Think's Group I ATC Randwick Guineas winner Inference, who is also from a daughter of Redoute's Choice. So You Think has enjoyed a great season with his three year-olds who also include Kiwi Group I winner La Bella Diosa and stakes-winner Northwest Passage as well as stakes horses So Si Bon, Smart as You Think, Kaching, So You Too, I Thought So and The Pinnacle. 4 l GEARING UP FOR SPRING - foxplay Heading into the spring carnival, we will feature some of our stable stars in the coming weeks and include their likely targets this campaign. A landmark horse of the stable and Star Thoroughbreds being the first Group One winner we ve celebrated together, Foxplay is a much admired mare in the stable. She broke through for a coveted Group One win in the Coolmore Legacy Queen of the Turf, adding to her three Group Two victories and taking her career earnings over the $1.2 million mark. Foxplay stepped up her campaign with a pleasing trial last week and is likely to have another on the 8th of August. All going to plan, Chris has marked the Warwick Stakes on the 19th of August as her resuming run and then the Chelmsford her next start. From there the team will assess her next target. 5 l preferment well received at brighthill parade The stable s four-time Group One winning son of Zabeel Preferment drew plenty of positive praise on Sunday at Brighthill Farm in Cambridge where he is getting ready for his first season at stud. Letting down into an impressive individual, co-owners Francis and Christine Cook were among the visitors to the farm where he stands for a fee of NZ$12,500. Photos: Trish Dunell

6 l ATC RECOGNISES OWNERS The last day of the season saw the Australian Turf Club present their inaugural ATC Owners Awards at Rosehill on Saturday. Two Chris Waller Racing-trained horses were recognised with Sophie pictured right accepting No Return s award for the most starts at the Friday night races this season while Montauk was recognised as the horse who has had the most starts at ATC courses over the season. Neil Werrett, Max Whitby, Lena Attebo and Bryan Rutter accept Montauk s ATC owners award for Montauk, winner of the most starts at ATC courses (18 for three wins).

7 Waller looking to improve tally Despite claiming his seventh Sydney trainers premiership and topping the Australian Group One winner s list for another season, Chris Waller is not about to rest on his laurels. As he prepares his team for the spring headlined by champion Winx, Waller is also searching for ways to improve on his record. The stable had nine Group One wins in 2016/17, six courtesy of Winx who will begin her quest for a third Cox Plate in the Warwick Stakes on August 19. While he appears to have her training regime down pat, Waller is always keen to learn more about his profession. We didn t have the volume of Group One winners as previously but it s been a satisfying year, Waller said. I ve travelled more this year. I ve been to Hong Kong, Japan, England and America so I ve got a few new ideas we can implement. Waller said his recent Japanese trip was an eye-opener. They have indoor tracks for the horses to work on, he said. So if it s too cold or too hot, they are perfect. It was my first time there to see how they do things. As well as his Sydney stables at Rosehill and Warwick Farm, Waller has a 25-horse set-up at Flemington in Melbourne and is renovating his new complex at the Gold Coast. While Winx sits at the top of the tree, Waller also has some other Group One ammunition with Egg Tart, Foxplay and Omei Sword leading the pack. Winner of the Group Two Silver Shadow Stakes and runner-up in the Golden Rose, Omei Sword ran in a barrier trial on Tuesday. The talented filly hasn t been seen since the Coolmore Classic during which she suffered a bleeding attack. The stable has also bought a slot in the $10 million Everest but has yet to commit to one of its own horses or one from elsewhere.- AAP Racing

8 Season Highlights We re going to touch base with some of the team over the next few weeks to get their highilghts from last season and some horses to keep an eye out for in the season ahead... Ben Cadden, senior gallop rider. The obvious season highlight for me was Winx s Cox Plate. In addition to that and adding to the occasion was being out the back before the parade and hearing Darryl Braithwaite singing The Horses before the race - it still gives me goosebumps now. WATCH it here. D argento and Calculated are two horses that have raced that I ve got a lot of time for but Kaonic is an unraced horse that s worth keeping an eye out for. I also have plenty of time for Chaussure who is getting over an injury at the moment. Melissa Tyson, admin guru Highlight - Winx winning her second Cox Plate. Horse to look out for this season - Omineca. Bruno Briffa - foreman, truck driver and lover of selfies with Winx My highlight was seeing Winx going to win from the 800m in the Cox Plate and working with her strapper Umut. My horse to follow this season is Kaonic. Sophie Baker, admin guru Highlight - Who Shot Thebarman running second in the Sydney Cup after falling in the first Sydney Cup that was declared a non-race. Horse to look out for this season - Life Less Ordinary. Polarisation winning the Sydney Cup with the then eight-year-old Who Shot Thebarman in second.

9 Gary Smallwood - foreman The Listed Prime Ministers Cup win of Religify at the Gold Coast. I saddled him up on the day and really enjoyed the occasion. Horse to follow - New Universe. Del Cheema - foreman My favourite moment of the season was Tangled s (pictured right) win in the Group Two Champagne Classic. Horse to follow - Calculated. Kerrie O Grady - office manager My highlight was Egg Tart (pictured right) winning in four in a row in different states in one preparation including two Group Ones! My horse to follow is Alward. Has been very unlucky and should be winning very soon. Ross Alexander - stable veterinarian My highlight was Omei Sword s (below) win in the Group Two Silver Shadow and my horse to follow is High Low Bet.
