2 Fair Hill NRMA Fair Hill is a 5,633 acre Natural Resources Management Area, where multiple management practices are employed for the maximum use and protection of Maryland's natural resources. Bordered by Pennsylvania to the north and less than one half mile west of Delaware, Fair Hill is known for its pristine fields, woodlands and natural beauty. At one time one of the largest private land holdings in the East, Fair Hill was formerly owned by William dupont, Jr., an avid equestrian who acquired the farmland as a means to enjoying riding as well as fox chasing. Fair Hill was purchased by the state in 1975 from Mr. dupont's estate. Fair Hill's attractions include the turf course, where steeplechase, timber course and flat races are held Memorial Day weekend with pari- mutuel wagering ( A pavilion is situated near the historic, rustic covered bridge where visitors frequently stop for picnic lunches. The fairgrounds host the annual Cecil County Fair where some 80,000 visitors attend the weeklong event ( Also located at the fairgrounds is the Edward L. Walls Activity Hall, with a capacity of 350 people. It includes kitchen and restroom facilities, and is available to rent for functions which further the mission of the Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Park Service or the local agricultural community. Fair Hill is open dawn to dusk. The Save Fair Hill Fund is a stewardship program that was established to support trail implementation and maintenance at the Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area. Should you wish to donate, please make your check payable to Save Fair Hill Fund and forward to DNR, Fair Hill NRMA, 300 Tawes Drive, Elkton, MD, All donations are greatly appreciated. 5 2011 MID- ATLANTIC WHIP CHALLENGE The Mid-Atlantic Whip Challenge is a point-based championship based on results from participating pleasure driving shows in the Mid-Atlantic region. Competitors who enter participating shows will earn points for their placing in all of the classes that they drive in. The points are accrued on a per-turnout basis. In other words each driver/horse combination earns points toward the challenge. All the classes entered count towards the award. Turnouts that do not place in classes of six or more entries will still earn one-half point. Hey, who doesn't like getting credit just for showing up? For placing entries, the points earned are calculated depending upon class size. The great thing is that entries are automatically entered in the challenge with their entry into any of the qualifying shows. While entries in the challenge are not required to compete at all four shows, one has to know that the math is in the favor of those who do. The award will be presented at the final show in the series. Participating shows are: May 7 th Delmarva Driving Club Show Jane Ramsey ; ramseyjb@yahoo.com May 15 th The 29 th Annual My Lady s Manor Driving Club Show Dana Bright, H: , cdeponyz@comcast.net June 12 th Brandywine Carriage Driving Show Margaret Grillet ; margaretgrillet@yahoo.com June 25 th Susquehanna Valley Whips & Wheels Pleasure Driving Show Tina Cornell , andtylertwo@hotmail.com CUSTOM FLECK SHOW WHIP The whip awarded is a collaboration of Coachman's Delight and Fleck Whip of Germany. The shaft is made from strong, flexible willow, with a leather handle. The bow top thong is finely braided leather for clear accurate communication with the horse. What sets this whip apart from others is its fine-tuning. The whip has been carefully balanced with a fulcrum within 3 centimeters of the top of the handle. That makes this whip feel very light in your hand. Anyone could carry this whip throughout the longest drive. The whip is as beautiful as it is functional, appropriate for the most formal driving occasion. To store the whip, Coachman's Delight is awarding a mounted whip reel with an engraved commemorative inscription.
