StackVision Sorbent Trap Utility Today s Presenter Rachel Morgan
Today we re going to talk about MATS and Sorbent Trap Status Configuration requirements Entering Sorbent trap data Sorbent Trap data in the EDR SV Releases MATS Readiness Questions and Answers
Notes for Slide #2 This is a list of the topics we hope to touch on today. We will also be asking a series of questions and people can respond with their answers. This will help us judge where people are in the MATS reporting time line.
MATS Status
Notes for Slide #4 Without a well thought out plan, hitting that moving target and meeting the obligations of the MATS regulations will be very difficult.
MATS is a moving target, BUT You better be aiming!
Notes for Slide #6 We recognize that the answers to a lot of MATS questions start with, That depends. What you have to report and when you begin reporting really depends the compliance demonstration strategy for your facility. Are you going to install new monitors or rely upon periodic stack testing results?
MATS Motto - Guess and Go!
Why Guess and Go? Rules keep changing Some questions are being answered and some are not ECMPS continues to evolve including: Reporting instructions XML EDR Schema ECMPS checks
Sorbent Trap Status
Sorbent Trap continues to change Guess and Go applies here, too
Step by Step Sorbent Trap Editor Configuration Requirements Data Entry
Step 1 UPDATE LICENSE KEY
Step 1- License Key Two modules required Sorbent Trap Module Turns on editor MATS Module Generates XML EDR Must request updated key and apply it
Step 2 CONFIGURE PARAMETERS
Step 2 Are your parameters configured? Hg Concentration Sorbent Trap TOL Sample Gas Flow parameter (GFM) for Train A and Train B (dscm) Average sample flow rate Train A and Train B (DSCMHR, LHR, etc) SFSR Ratio SFSR Ratio for Train A and Train B
Notes for Slide #16 Remember, support can t make these changes for you. If you don t have significant prior experience I would strongly suggest you not try this yourself
Remember Support can t make StackStudio changes for you If you aren t experienced with configuration changes, you will not be successful Lot s of people need changes made so you should get in the queue now. The need for changes will continue as the MATS evolves. (remember PM?)
Stop Do not install 4.5 until Step 2 is complete!
But why? You will not be able to enter a valid sorbent trap in 4.5 without these parameters
Step 3 CONFIGURE SORBENT TRAP EDITOR
Step 3 Configure Sorbent Trap Editor In StackStudio, define Sorbent Trap Parameters: Hg Concentration Stack Flow Sample Flow for Train A and Train B SFSR Ratio for Train A and Train B
Stop Do not go to Step 4 until Step 3 is complete!
But why? You will not be able to enter a valid sorbent trap record in 4.5 without this configuration in place
Step 4 CONFIGURE PROCESSNOW
Step 4 Add ProcessNow task Add new SORBENTTRAP Task to your existing ProcessNow sequence DO NOT just put it at the bottom Location in sequence will depend on your sequence Can apply data to hour, minute or both Does not do downstream calculations Logic continues to evolve
ST ProcessNow task evolves again Updated logic to recalculate Sample Flow hourly data Transition hours use only minutes from trap removed from service. Non-transition hours use only minutes when trap is in service
What happens if I don t do step 4? Without the new task in your ProcessNow sequence, No Hg concentration data will be applied No downstream calculation will occur You will not be able to generate valid an EDR
Step 5 SORBENT TRAP DATA ENTRY

Enter your sample data Dates Serial number Main Hg Mass Breakthrough Hg Mass Spike Hg Mass Spike Reference Total Sample Volume
Entering sample data You can t enter incomplete records. This prevents bad data downstream Dates - Watch out for gaps or overlaps Serial number up to 10 digits The breakthrough Hg mass is the amount of mercury that breaks through from the main section and is captured by the middle section. The amount of mercury is entered in nanograms (ng), but converted to micrograms (ug) for subsequent calculations.
Entering sample data Data is entered in nanograms (ng), but converted to micrograms (ug) for subsequent calculations. Total Sample Volume represents how much flue gas passed all the way through the sorbent trap, including the main chamber, the breakthrough chamber, and the spike chamber. Enter the value recorded by the Gas Flow Meter in dry standard cubic meters (dscm).
Reference SFSR Ratio Determined based on entries from the fields above, as well as the Stack Flow Rate parameter, Train A SFSR Ratio parameter, and Train B SFSR Ratio parameter that were defined in Configure Hg Sorbent Trap Parameters in StackStudio
How is the SFSR calculated? R = KQh/Fh (Equation 12B-3) Rh = SFSR Ratio Qh = Stack gas volumetric flow rate Fh = Sample flow rate, in appropriate units (e.g., liters/min, cc/min, dscm/min) K = Power of ten multiplier, to keep the value of Rh between 1 and 100. The appropriate K value will depend on the selected units of measure for the sample flow rate and the range of expected stack gas flow rates.
How the Reference Ratio is determined? The sorbent trap must be in service for the full hour not a transition hour Stack Flow Rate parameter value must be valid. It cannot be marked as missing, invalid or substituted. SFSR ratio parameter value must be valid. It cannot be marked as missing, invalid
Train Lost? When checked that train is locked and read-only Invalidates that train Click on the Explanation icon to add information about the lost train
Sampling Ratio Check Result Code Examines hours where: Hourly ratio value is valid Hourly stack gas flow rate is not a substitute data value Average sample flow rate is not missing or invalid
Sampling Ratio Check Result Code Pass/Fail Criteria: Pass if <5% of the hourly ratios recorded during the collection period for this trap or 5 hourly ratios (whichever is less restrictive) deviate from the reference ratio by more than +/- 25%
Post Leak Check Result Dropdown where you select Passed or Failed The leakage rate must not exceed 4 percent of the average sampling rate for the monitoring period This data is not in the DAS so can t be determined programmatically
Train QA Status Code Passed passed all QA/QC criteria and sample flow meter was in control INC Gas Flow Meter data is incomplete the first or last hour was missing or invalid Failed Sample flow meter was in control but failed at least one of the QA/QC criteria Post leak check, % breakthrough, SFSR ratio check or % spike recovery Expired Required QA (calibration) not performed on the sample flow meter. The sample flow meter is out of control.
Percent Breakthrough %B = M2/M1 x 100 Where: M2 = Mass of Hg recovered from section 2 of the sorbent trap, (μgm) M1 = Mass of Hg recovered from section 1 of the sorbent trap, (μgm)
Percent Breakthrough Pass/fail criteria 5% of Section 1 Hg mass or 10% of Section 1 Hg mass if average Hg concentration is 0.5 µg/scm or
Percent Breakthrough Pass/fail criteria- But wait there is more! No criterion when Hg concentration for trap less than 10% of the applicable emission limit (must meet all other QA/QC specifications) If there is an applicable emission limit configured, then perform the last check. If one is not configured then skip it.
Percent Spike Recovery %R = M3/Ms x 100 Where: %R = Percentage recovery of the presampling spike M3 = Spike Hg Mass, (µg) Ms = Spike Reference, (µg)
Percent Spike Recovery Pass/fail criteria Spike recovery must be between 75 and 125% of spike amount 125% 75%
Train Hg Concentration C= ((M1/1000) + (M2/1000)) / Vt Where: C = Unadjusted Concentration of Hg for the collection period, (μg/dscm) M1 = Main Hg Mass M2 = Breakthrough Hg Mass Vt = Total Sample Volume (dscm)
Paired Trap Agreement R D = ( Ca - Cb / Ca + Cb ) x 100 Where: RD = Relative deviation between the Hg concentrations from Trains A and B (percent) Ca = Hg Concentration for Train A Cb = Hg Concentration of Hg for Train B
Paired Trap Agreement Pass/fail criteria: 10% Relative Deviation (RD) if the average concentration is > 1.0 µg/m 3 20% RD if the average concentration is 1.0 µg/m 3 Absolute difference between concentrations from paired traps is 0.03 µg/m 3 If fails, displays UNCERTAIN Train QA Status Code message
Hg System Concentration & MODC Do both traps of the pair meet the five QA acceptance criteria? If Yes, then do the results from the two traps meet the paired trap agreement criteria? If Yes, report the average concentration. Report MC 01. If No, report the higher concentration of the two. Report MC 33.
Hg System Concentration and MODC Do both traps of the pair meet the five QA acceptance criteria? If No If only one of the traps passes the five QA acceptance criteria, then report the concentration from that trap times Report MC 32. If neither of the traps passes all five QA acceptance criteria, then Hg is invalid. Report MC 34.
Override checkbox Allows you to manually enter the Hg concentration value This is for unique calculation requirements
What about my historical records? If you don t edit them, then data will remain untouched If you do edit them, then must have all ratio data present Recommend re-calculating all reported Sorbent Trap records using the latest version prior to reporting (There is a calculate button at the top that will recalculate your Hg concentrations and results.)
