ROSEHILL GARDENS Saturday 9 December 2017 Race 6: Beanie for Brain Cancer Handicap 1400m First Hand Stewards today concluded an inquiry opened in respect to App. B McDougall's handling of the gelding in this event. When questioned regarding his riding in the early stages and in particular the reason he continued to ride forward to cross Invinzabeel, App. B McDougall stated that he had been instructed to take up a forward position on the gelding, with the option of taking a position with cover if the tempo was quick. He said, after his mount commenced well, he elected to go forward, with a view to racing outside the expected leader Flow, however when Invinzabeel improved to his inside, he was caught three wide without cover. He added he then looked back to his inside to ascertain if there was an opportunity to position himself behind Invinzabeel, but was of the view there was not sufficient room to do so and for this reason he elected to ride his mount forward with a view to crossing those runners. App. McDougall added when Invinzabeel then held its position to his inside he was obliged to make some use of his mount to cross that runner and ultimately set a very fast tempo in the early stages and in particular between the 1200m and 1000m (10.99 seconds). Co-trainer Mr M Hawkes confirmed the instructions issued and expressed disappointment with App. McDougall's riding at the relevant stages. After considering a report from Racing NSW Betting Analyst Mr M Reid, who advised Stewards there was no integrity concern in respect to the wagering activity in this event, Stewards informed App. McDougall ha had made an error of judgement in continuing to ride his mount forward to cross Invinzabeel in the early stages when the tempo of the event was fast. B McDougall was advised he would be expected to show greater judgement than he did on this occasion and accordingly, under the provisions of AR92A, he was referred to the Riding Skills Panel for remedial training.

2 2 RACE 1: Hyland Boxing Day Sale Handicap 1000m Ligulate Stewards permitted the colt to parade with earmuffs in the pre-parade as it was fractious in the tie-up stalls. Began awkwardly and brushed Into The Abyss. Laid in over the final 200m. Bad Boy For Love lifted its front feet off the ground as the start was effected, began awkwardly and soon thereafter shifted out abruptly. Raced greenly throughout the event and on the home turn was inclined to lay out. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Commissioner slow to begin. Boudicea Belle inclined to race keenly in the middle stages as its rider endeavoured to obtain cover on the back of Vainity. Lilith raced wide and without cover throughout. Vainity laid out when placed under pressure in the straight. RACE 2: #Theraces Handicap 1200m Royal Phoenix began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Calculated when questioned regarding his riding of the colt, B Shinn stated his instructions were to endeavour to have his mount settle where comfortable and emphasis was placed on ensuring that Calculated did not overrace as it had had a tendency to do so in its previous race starts. He said after commencing reasonably well he followed Velocano across, however when the rider of Velocano then restrained to take up a position towards the rear of the field, his mount was caught wide and without cover in the early stages. He added that when Royal Phoenix then improved through the field in the early stages to the inside of Intuition this resulted in that runner being caught wide and Calculated being taken even wider on the track whereby his mount was inclined to overrace. B Shinn further stated that he then elected to come back and follow Intuition three wide with some cover, however when Intuition was able to shift into one off behind Royal Phoenix his mount was then obliged to continue to race wide and without cover throughout the middle stages. He said when Intuition shifted off making the home turn he was able to follow that runner into the straight, whereby he then improved to its outside near the 350m and he had an uninterrupted run to the finish. When questioned as to whether there was an opportunity to go forward of Intuition in the middle stages, B Shinn stated he would have had to make too much use of his mount to do so and this was against his instructions to endeavour to have the colt settle. Trainer representative Mr C Duckworth confirmed the instructions and, whilst disappointed that Calculated was not able to secure the best of runs in the race, was satisfied with the riding of B Shinn. Mr Duckworth added that Calculated, which had drifted in today's market, had pleased the stable since its first up run at Randwick on 16 December 2017 and was expected to perform well. After considering all the evidence, Stewards advised B Shinn that the tactics he adopted throughout the early and middle stages of the event were not unreasonable, particularly in circumstances where the first 600m of the race was run at a solid tempo (35.44 seconds) and given that his instructions had been to endeavour to ensure that Calculated did not overrace in the event.

3 3 RACE 3: TAB Handicap 1000m Don't Tease Me knuckled on jumping. Petrossian after being slow to begin failed to muster speed despite being ridden along. Nonpareil from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. When questioned regarding the performance of the mare, rider C Brown stated that, first up over 1000m today, his mount settled back as anticipated. He said in the early stages Nonpareil was able to travel comfortably on the bridle, but when the tempo increased mid race he was obliged to make some use of his mount to ensure that it maintained its position at the rear of the field. He added, after saving ground on the turn, he then commenced to ride his mount out in the straight, but it was not until the final 100m that the mare was able to commence to finish the race off. C Brown further stated that Nonpareil would derive benefit from a step up in distance. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Burradoo raced wide and without cover throughout. RACE 4: Book Summer Hospitality Today Handicap 2400m Last Wish slow to begin. Approaching the 150m had to be steadied when disappointed for clear running between Moqueen and Coonawarra, which shifted out slightly. Last Wish was then directed to the inside of Coonawarra to obtain clear running. A post-race veterinary examination abraded both hind bumpers. Richard Of Yorke from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. When questioned regarding his riding out of the gelding, T Angland stated that his mount hung in for the majority of the event. He said, after following Cordero into the straight, he endeavoured to shift to the outside of that runner to improve, however the racing manners of the gelding made it difficult to do so. He added, after obtaining a position outside Cordero, Richard Of Yorke continued to hang in badly and, as he was concerned he was awkwardly placed behind Cordero, he was reluctant to pull his whip through to the right hand, as he felt the gelding may have run in behind Cordero, which would have compromised his safety. T Angland further stated, after improving and making ground on Cordero, he then was able to pull the whip through to the right hand, whereby Richard Of Yorke then commenced to make ground on Cordero. The racing manners of the gelding were brought to the attention of trainer representative Mr C Duckworth. Coonawarra D McDonogh was fined $200 under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for using the whip on nine occasions prior to the 100m (four more than permitted). When questioned regarding the performance of the gelding, rider D McDonogh stated his mount had travelled comfortably in the lead, but when asked to quicken from the 600m initially responded as he anticipated, however over the final 200m gave ground and did not run out a strong 2400m. He said in his view racing on a Good (4) surface today may not have suited the gelding, which appears to be better suited by a firmer track. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Bella Galeano a post-race veterinary examination revealed blood in the nearside nostril. Trainer representative Mr C Duckworth was advised the mare would be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to its next race start.

4 4 RACE 5: Schweppes Handicap 1600m Queen Misty slow to begin. Pioneering made contact with Heavenly Anna on jumping. App. L Magorrian was fined the sum of $300 under AR137A(4)(b) for using the whip arm in an action where by it was raised above shoulder height. Royal Stamp slow to begin. Steadied back to endeavour to find cover from its wide barrier and then raced wide and without cover until nearing the 900m. Baysa near the 150m was disappointed for running to the outside of Pioneering (L Magorrian) when that runner shifted out. App. L Magorrian was reprimanded and advised he must straighten his mounts when they commence to shift ground. Rider B Shinn stated his mount commenced awkwardly today, shifted out and made contact with Pioneering, which resulted in it settling towards the rear of the field. When questioned regarding his riding in the straight, B Shinn stated, after following Pioneering into the straight, he contemplated shifting to that runner's inside to improve. He said when Live To Dream shifted out slightly, he then elected to improve to the outside of Pioneering to secure clear running between Pioneering and Ladder, but as he did so Pioneering shifted out, resulting in him having to steady to alter course back to the inside of that runner to obtain clear running near the 150. He added in his view, whilst Baysa was disappointed for clear running, it was not finishing the race off in a manner whereby it would have finished in a more forward placing than it obtained. Ladder rider K O'Hara reported in her opinion the mare failed to run out a strong 1600m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare was slow to recover. RACE 6: Summer Cup (Group 3) 2000m Lord Kingsley Stewards permitted C Reith to ride the gelding 1 kilogram overweight. Slow to begin and then from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. When questioned regarding the performance, rider C Reith stated the only explanation he could offer was that the track had become a little cut up in a section near the 800m and from this point Lord Kingsley failed to stretch out despite his efforts. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be coughing. Trainer Ms L Wray concurred with the views of C Reith and stated that the gelding has failed previously on surfaces that were shifty. She said Lord Kingsley, although it had pleased leading into today's race, would now be spelled and she undertook to report if there is anything amiss with the gelding on its return to the stable. Destiny's Kiss slow to begin. Black On Gold slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Dark Eyes began awkwardly, shifted out and hampered Slow Pace. Mighty Lucky knuckled over shortly after the start. Overraced in the early and middle stages. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Montauk raced wide and without cover until near the 900m.

5 5 Dee I Cee raced wide and without cover after the 900m. Red Excitement rider B Avdulla stated his intention was to ride the gelding in a similar manner as it was last start, but with the lack of early tempo, when his mount began well today he was obliged to lead on the gelding. Live To Dream when questioned regarding the improved performance, trainer representative Mr J Bruce stated that at the mare's last start at Wyong on 13 December 2017 it was badly crowded at the start, resulting in it settling back in the field before being held up in the early part of the straight. He said the principal reason for today's improved performance was with the mare stepping up in distance today it was able to lead and dictate terms. RACE 7: Spinalcure Racing4Research Sprint 1200m Can Dream Stewards permitted C Reith to ride the mare 1 kilogram overweight. Vaniloquio slow to begin and then from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. In the straight hung out and proved difficult to ride. Mr McBat slow to begin. Ready Set Sing slow to begin. Oscar's Choice slow to begin. Raced keenly in the early stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have abraded both hind bumpers. Mon Pere began awkwardly and then from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. Raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event and leaving the 800m had to be checked when Vaniloquio ran out after that horse was checked away from the heels of Painted Lady. Akasaki rider App. B McDougall stated that his mount was obliged to follow the earlier leader Montreal at a solid tempo and under pressure in the straight commenced to give ground. He said approaching the 100m his mount made an abnormal respiratory noise and from this point weakened noticeably. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr S Jones advised the gelding had been subject to a wind operation previously and for this reason had been restricted to shorter distances. He said he attributed today's performance to the fact that the gelding had to chase on a strong tempo over 1200m. Mr Jones indicated it is now his intention to drop Akasaki back in grade and distance for its next start. Bearing this in mind, Stewards determined no action was to be taken other than to have Mr Jones provide a veterinary clearance for the gelding prior to its next start. RACE 8: tab.com.au Handicap 1400m Vega began awkwardly. Raced wide and without cover throughout. Sea Sharp slow to begin.

6 6 Aquatic from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. When the tempo steadied leaving the 800m had to be checked away from the heels of Domed. Sharpe Hussler raced wide and without cover from the 900m Dream I Can raced wide and without cover from the 800m. Raced keenly in the early stages and near the 1000m had to be checked away from the heels of On The Spot. On The Spot near the 800m had to be steadied away from the heels of Vega (App. J Van Overmeire), which shifted in when not clear. After crossing On The Spot App. Overmeire then eased his mount, which resulted in On The Spot having to be checked from the heels of that runner. App. Overmeire was reprimanded and advised he must ensure, firstly, that he is two lengths clear when shifting ground and, secondly, he does not ease the tempo too quickly so as to avoid runners behind being inconvenienced. Feelin The Love Near the 700m, when inclined to overrace, was checked to avoid the heels of Bye See. The Hipster when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider C Brown stated he had to make some use of his mount to lead in the early stages, but after finding the lead making the first turn was able to steady the tempo, whereby The Hipster was able to run some moderate sections in the middle stages. He said that when he placed his mount under pressure in the straight it commenced to give ground and in his opinion raced like a horse that had come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr T Martin advised The Hipster had pleased the stable since its last start at Rosehill on 9 December 2017 and had been expected to perform well. He said having regard to today's performance he would now spell the gelding and undertook to report back if there is anything amiss with The Hipster subsequent to the event. Dawn Raid rider B Avdulla stated, as notified to the Stewards, his intention was to be more forward, but his mount was slow to begin and as a consequence he elected to ride the gelding quiet. He said near the 700m when the tempo slackened his mount commenced to race keenly and had to be checked away from the heels of On The Spot, resulting in Dawn Raid shifting out and hampering Dream I Can. He added from this point he followed Sharpe Hussler into the event and, after initially responding in the early part of the straight, was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr J O'Shea was asked to report back on the condition of the gelding subsequent to the race. GENERAL: Summary of whip use: Stewards noted the following riders exceeded the permitted strikes of the whip prior to the 100m under AR137A(5)(a)(ii). Bearing in mind the totality of whip use, no action was taken. Race 1 C Brown (Lilith) 6 strikes prior to the 100m. Race 2 B Shinn (Calculated) 6 strikes prior to the 100m, including 2 consecutive.
