Shows recently in Springfield, IL had over 300 entries even though there was early concern about the numbers. Not a huge amount of horses, but the people who participated seemed to have fun showing in lots classes. The IQHYA Youth Show (formerly Lil Abe) had over 500 entries, nice circuit awards, late nights, lots of reiners, lots of speed participants. A good job by Mary and Jody and their crew. People are heading north to Wisconsin or south to DuQuoin for Memorial Day. Have you checked out the LLQHA website recently? I redesigned it. Hope everyone likes it! Don t forget the Run to the Border shows in Roscoe in June. The facility is huge, with multiple arenas. Early stall reservations look like we will have some over fence classes this year. I hope the weather cooperates so we can use the outdoor arenas they are so nice. Showbills are included in this Log. Ed Lawrence recently took at job at Four Winds Equestrian Center in Salem, WI. Hopefully we will see him at some AQHA shows, but the facility also has a series of open shows. Ed says the facility is fantastic and people should stop by and take a look. Congratulations to Luann Meyer and My Details are Hot for capturing an Amateur Championship finishing it at Springfield. Luann also picked up the Select Amateur All-around for that weekend. She mentioned in a note to me that she had received 2 certificates from AQHA stating that her horse had ended up 3rd in the nation in Select Performance Mares (a category she didn t even know existed), and 6th in the nation in Open Junior Performance Mares. On a personal note, my son, Nathan, got married on May 1st. All went well, other than the weather not cooperating as much as we would have liked. They honeymooned on the east coast and found out they loved the area. Congratulations to Alyssa Freeman a college graduate! Alyssa, a member of their equestrian team, graduated from Kansas State University recently. Construction in Oshkosh exit closed! If you re going to the Oshkosh shows, please note the alternate directions: Take Hwy 41 north to the Hwy 45 exit (first exit after Butte des Mort Bridge). Exit on Hwy 45. At the bottom of the ramp, turn left. Go about 1 1/2 miles to Cty Road T. Turn onto Cty Road T and go to Cty Road Y. Turn right onto Cty Road Y and head east to show facility. If you are coming from the north you will exit on the Breezewood exit in Neenah and follow frontage road west until you get to Hwy 76. You will then turn left on 76 to County Road Y. Turn left on Y and go east to facility. You will be following these directions to facility because the off ramps and on ramps for Hwy 76 are closed until July. Some highlights from Springfield: Cori Flowers seemed to be clicking with her new horse Goodbarshandsumeasset, winning senior western pleasure under one judge and winning in14-18 western pleasure and showmanship. Chayna DeNicolo and NI Naturallyfabulous picked up points in hunter under saddle, in green and junior classes, as well as points in youth geldings and showmanship. Deb and Jennifer Wagner have a new horse Ima Chipped Jewell to add to their show string. Deb picked up select showmanship points with the new horse. Marcia Smith and One Slick Leaguer picked up points in western riding, western pleasure, and trail winning classes several times. The Clintons horse Naturally Its George was a star in western pleasure and hunter under saddle. Even though I didn t see Alyce Miller, I saw her horse Am a Securetradition picking up points in hunter under saddle.

2 Big Bay Investment, Gale Schroeder s horse, was doing well in performance geldings, but so was Ima Party Crasher, owned by Jennifer and Deborah Wagner. Makayla Maciejewski on Thumb Enterprise were picking up hunter under saddle points also. Diane Stewart and Vestamatic as well as Joan Sellberg and Simply a Hustler picked up points in amateur select showmanship. Joan won Select trail under both judges one day, also. Kristine Stewart and SF Banker were first in 13 & under western pleasure,13 & under hunter under saddle, and 13 & under equitation, and second in youth geldings and 13 & under showmanship she was having a very good weekend. Kathy Harper and Chancethisinvestment won Novice Amateur Showmanship under one judge and were second in a Novice Amateur Horsemanship. Gail Schroeder and Big Bay Investment won Novice Amateur Showmanship under another judge. Your first showing wardrobe should revolve around the most versatile color. Think of that cocktail dress when shopping for your first horse show ensemble, say Kay Mortensen and Penny Young, owners of Showtime Show Clothing in Purcell, Oklahoma. The core of the outfit should match anything you throw on top of it. Kay suggests basic black for a beginner s staple items it s flattering on any person or horse. A basic black front zip jacket dotted with crystals will take you from the showmanship class to the riding classes, she says. The jacket should be hip length to pair with black showmanship pants, and to wear out over your chaps for riding classes. The crystals on the jacket will add sparkle and shine, which will keep you from being too dark in the arena. A stretchy undergarment will smooth out the bra lines and make you look sleek and smooth. Add black boots and a black professionally shaped hat, and you ll be ready to hit the arena. IQHYA Youth show highlights: Sam Mather and Bostons News Flash picked up a Sound boring? It s actually very smart. People get in trouble second in Novice Youth Showmanship. Joan Sellberg when they want to buy a funny color for their first outfit, Penny and Simply a Hustler were first in Amateur Select warned. Then they can t find anything else to match the Showmanship. Chayna DeNicolo picked up Youth chaps. That s poor planning. Not to mention a waste of Gelding points with NI Naturallyfabulous look out, that money. HUS horse might be becoming a halter horse. Not to be undone her mom, Carrie, showed in Amateur Geldings and picked up halter points also. Alyce Miller showed Follow this advice for a stylish look. her gelding Am a Securetradition in Amateur Performance Geldings and was second under both judges. She also picked up a first and second in Senior Don t wear ill-fitting, baggy clothes. You want to look sharp Hunter Under Saddle and 2 first in Amateur Select and flawless in tailor-fit clothes. They also Don t wear crepe soles or lace-up boots. Roper-style, lowheeled, well-shined boots are your best bet. Crepe soles can picked up a first and second in Novice Youth Trail. be OK for men, but they down-dress women s outfits and make their feet look big. Don t wear dangly jewelry. Small crystal studs do the trick. Don t wear a hair net. Keep your hair neatly tucked into your hat, in a ponytail or in a neat bun, with no bangs or flyaways. Black chaps and hat give you lots of options. No woman s closet is complete without the essential black cocktail dress.
