4 MAKFI CHALLENGE STAKES RUNNER PROFILE: ADDICTIVE HABIT Age/Sex: Breeding: Owner: Breeder: Trainer: 6YO Brown Gelding Colombia x Chasing the Habit H H & Mrs L R Nicholson, Mrs D A & W H O Brien, G J & Mrs I M Roddick, Mrs A E & C P Scott, K & Mrs M K Treadaway G J & Mrs I M Roddick Lee Somervell Fresh off his G2 Foxbridge Plate victory in mid-august, Addictive Habit will enter the Makfi looking for his first G1 win. A versatile horse, Addictive Habit has won nine times from 1200m to 2000m and looks to have improved with age, with six of these victories in 2014, and he will definitely be one to watch in this weekend s race. The six-year-old won his first start as a two-year-old and was placed second in the Listed Ryder Stakes. As a three-year-old he was Group placed twice, finishing second to Habibi in the G2 Great Northern Guineas, before sustaining a tendon injury in the G1 NZ Derby and being put aside for a year. He made a complete recovery and returned to the racetrack in April 2014, winning over 1600 metres at his second start, two placings at that distance followed before another win and then third in the Foxton Cup 2040m. At his next start he ran fourth in the Kiwifruit Cup 2100m followed by a second in the Taumaranui Cup 2100m. Dropped back to 1600m he won two open handicaps, then completed a hat trick by winning the Livamol Classic 2000m prelude at Hastings. He took on the big guns in the G1 Livamol Classic 2040m, disappointing with ninth place, before claiming victory in the G2 Coupland Bakeries Mile, once again prevailing over 1600m. Addictive Habit raced twice in 2015 in NZ with a second placing over 1400m, before campaigning in Australia in 2015 with four starts resulting in a win in the Listed Southbank Insurers 1800m and a second over 1600m, before resuming in the Foxbridge for the win over 1200m. Addictive Habit s breeder Isabell Roddick is a great believer in strong bloodlines, and a follower of line breeding and this is reflective in Addictive Habit s mating. I went to Columbia because of the bloodlines. I mean he is by Zabeel out of Eight Carat. Even if he didn t race, the bloodlines are still there. I thought I would try that and see what happens now I am sending more mares there, most of the relations that I have from the family...i always look for a good match up, I am a bit of a line breeder, Eight Carat carried Relic and so does this female family.

5 ONE TO WATCH: POSTBOY Age/Sex: Breeding: Owner: Breeder: Trainer: 6YO Chestnut Gelding Postponed x Toat D P & Mrs K C Fleming D P & Mrs K C Fleming Roydon Bergerson This week s one to watch is the lightly raced son of stalwart Westbury Stud sire Postponed, six-year-old gelding Postboy. With just two seasons under his belt, Postboy has only had twelve career starts, resulting in three wins and four second placings, all in his last eight starts. Postboy recorded his second win in March with a well-timed run for jockey Hayden Tinsley at Awapuni to win the Rating 65 mile under topweight of 59.5 kilograms. Trainer Roydon Bergerson was complimentary about his charge stating He s got a great turn of foot for a big horse...he ll be even better next season. Following up that result with a second in the Diamond One Cup and first in the Hawkes Bay Hunt Raceday in his last start, Postboy doesn t look likely to disappoint. Postboy will run in this Saturday s Bostock New Zealand Spring Carnival Opener 1600m event up against some very stiff competition, including Authentic Paddy, Blizzard, Danza Lad and we look forward to seeing what he can bring to this race and the season beyond.

6 BROODMARE PROFILE: PALOMA Breeding: Owner: Breeder: Mossman x World Peace NZ Thoroughbred Holdings Ltd G Harvey This week we take a look at Paloma, a daughter of Mossman out of the Danehill mare World Peace, from one of the best families in the Australian Stud Book. Paloma is a half-sister to quality G3 winner Chivalry, while her second dam World Peace is the winner of the G3 Blue Diamond Preview and third dam Light Up the World was a G2 winner in Sydney, while other members of the family include Thorn Park, Bentley Biscuit, Euphoria, Christmas Tree, Denise s Joy etc. Paloma has had three foals, with two to race for one winner and one placegetter. Paloma s second foal, by Westbury Stud s exciting sire Makfi, is the stakes performing filly Miss Fi (pictured), who has been a model of consistency with one win and three placings from six career starts as a twoyear-old, including second in the Listed Castledown Stakes, and has only had one placing further back than fourth. Miss Fi was knocked down to Champion Trainer Lisa Latta for $100,000 at the 2014 Select Sale at Karaka, and has shown improvement every start, breaking maiden stylishly in her fifth start, rolling along nicely in the lead and quickening up very well over the final 200m to put her rivals away by 4.3 lengths at the line. Paloma has a two-year-old filly by Makfi, and has been booked to visit exciting first season sire El Roca this year.
