1 1 Weather: Showers Track: Heavy (9) Rail: +6m Entire Circuit Penetrometer: 6.1 STEWARDS REPORT Australian Turf Club CANTERBURY PARK RACECOURSE Friday 16 December 2016 STEWARDS: T P Moxon (Chairman), P C Dingwall, T A McDonald, and cadet J J E Earl (pj) Supplementary: WARWICK FARM Wednesday 14 December 2016 RACE 2 TAB Handicap 2200m Addicticraft Trainer, Mr N Mayfield Smith reported that an inspection by the stable veterinarian upon returning to the stable that evening, found Addicticraft to be displaying soreness in the near side front fetlock on flexion and to a lesser extent, the offside fetlock. Radiographs were taken, the results of which were normal. Mr N Mayfield Smith advised that Addicticraft will now be sent for a spell. Mr Steel stable representative, Mr J Bruce advised that the gelding would now be spelled. RACE 1: Schweppes Plate 1200m Allied Power a post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Charlie Chap slow to begin. Passing the 800m, Charlie Chap had to be steadied when crowded by Allied Power (H Bowman), which shifted in when not clear and was then corrected by its rider, H Bowman. Charlie Chap laid out rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight. The gelding was inclined to shift ground when under pressure in the straight. Rider, H Bowman (Allied Power) was found guilty to a charge of careless riding in that approaching the first turn, near the 700m, he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Charlie Chap, resulting in that runner having to be steadied and shifted to the outside of Allied Power. H Bowman's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Monday, 26 th December 2016 and to expire on Saturday, 7 th January 2017 on which day he may ride. Curdled bounded on jumping. Passing the 250m, Curdled was inconvenienced by Charlie Chap, which shifted in. Gaulois passing the 900m, was inconvenienced by Allied Power which shifted in when not quite clear. Goodfella began awkwardly. In the early part of the straight, Goodfella was hampered and taken wider by Charlie Chap.

2 2 Talladega Knight approaching the 400m, had to be steadied when crowded by Curdled, which shifted in abruptly. Rider, K McEvoy reported that he noticed Talladega Knight had its tongue over the bit in the barriers, but he had this issue rectified by a barrier attendant. Following the event however, he again found the colt to have gotten its tongue over the bit. A post-race veterinary examination of Talladega Knight revealed no abnormalities. Stable representative N Paine advised that it would be the stable's intention to add a tongue tie to the gear of the colt and furthermore he undertook to report back on the immediate racing future of Talladega Knight in the days subsequent. Mr N Paine was advised that Talladega Knight will be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to racing again. RACE 2: TAB Handicap 1200m El Venetian rider, T Angland reported that in his opinion, the gelding did not handle tonight's heavy track conditions. T Angland was reminded of his obligation to ride his horse out to the winning post, at least hands and heels, whenever possible. A post-race veterinary examination of El Venetian revealed the gelding to be displaying poor post-race recovery. Dortmund began awkwardly and made contact with the near side of its barrier. Nepean was inclined to lay in under pressure over the final 200m. Our Barty was slow to begin and then was crowded shortly after the start between Nepean and Pure Poison, both of which shifted ground. Rider, J Parr reported that the gelding raced very greenly when in restricted room to the inside of Nepean and was inclined to hang out badly. He said Our Barty was reluctant to hold its position to the inside of Nepean near the 600m and became badly unbalanced and lost ground. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding revealed no abnormalities. Trainer, Mr J Pride was advised that Our Barty would be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to racing again. Thaad began awkwardly and lost ground. Pure Poison overraced throughout the early and middle stages and refused to settle. Birdsong approaching the 500m, was checked away from the heels of Our Barty, which was continuing to give ground. RACE 3: ATC Membership Handicap 1550m Cannot Be Serios to be ridden quieter; settled back. Cannot Be Serios was briefly held up at the entrance to the straight. Wu Gok to be ridden further forward and lead if possible; settled on pace. Wu Gok began awkwardly and a short distance later, was bumped on the hindquarters by Pleased and became unbalanced. Wu Gok laid in under pressure in the straight. Jolie's Pearl rider, B Shinn reported that in his opinion, the filly did not handle tonight's heavy track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination of Jolie's Pearl revealed no abnormalities. Arbeitsam lost its off-fore plate shortly after the start. Arbeitsam laid out under pressure in the straight. Arbeitsam raced keenly in the early stages..

3 3 Cosmic Engine began awkwardly and then a short distance later, bumped with Unbridled Power. Cosmic Engine raced keenly in the early stages. Gold Artisan in the early part of the straight, was hampered and taken wider by Cannot Be Serios, which shifted out to continue into clear running. Pleased was badly crowded on jumping by Arbeitsam, which shifted in. Approaching the 200m, Pleased was briefly crowded for room between Arbeitsam and Wu Gok, both of which shifted ground. RACE 4: tab.com.au Handicap 1100m Wide Acclaim when questioned regarding the gelding settling back in the field today, B Melham stated that he was under no specific instructions as to where to position his mount, however, to be positive in the early stages. He stated that at its previous start at Gosford on 1 st December 2016, Wide Acclaim was able to lead and win in a weaker grade. B Melham added that after beginning satisfactorily from a wide barrier he rode his mount in an endeavour to be in a forward position, however, when he noticed several runners showing superior speed to Wide Acclaim, rather than risk being caught wide, he elected to restrain his mount and settle in a position worse than midfield with cover. Trainer Mr G Portelli confirmed the nature of the instructions issued to B Melham and bearing in mind the circumstances, he was satisfied with B Melham's decision to settle back in the field. Fanning when questioned relative to his riding rounding the home turn and the reasons he shifted his mount away from the rail, which ultimately enabled Deploy to secure running to his inside, C Reith stated that his instructions from Mr Conners, as he had formed the opinion that the ground closer to the running rail was inferior, was to make his run on Fanning some three to four horses away from the rail. Trainer, Mr C Conners confirmed the instructions issued to C Reith. Pale Ale as the start was affected, the gelding turned its head to the near side and as a result, lost ground. Pale Ale raced keenly in the middle stages. RACE 5: #Theraces Handicap 1250m Chavish from a wide barrier, in the early stages, was shifted in across behind runners. Bearskin slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have bled from both nostrils on the first occasion. Stable representative, Mr G Thompson was advised that Bearskin would incur the mandatory three month ban from racing under the provisions of AR53A(4). Redouble slow to begin. Waltzing Willie when questioned, rider T Angland explained that he was under no specific instructions as to where to have the gelding positioned in the race. He stated that Waltzing Willie began well and as a result, was able to take up a forward position without placing his mount under any undue pressure. RACE 6: TAB Rewards Handicap 1900m

4 4 Bon Equus when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, trainer Mr J Pride advised that in his opinion, Bon Equus does not handle heavy track conditions and said that this was the principle reason for the poor performance. A post-race veterinary examination of Bon Equus revealed no abnormalities. Austin a post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Brassy Belle when questioned regarding the tactics adopted on Brassy Belle, L Roche explained that his instructions were to be positive on the mare and if possible to obtain a position outside the anticipated leader of the event, I'm Bulletproof. He said that after beginning satisfactorily, he pushed his mount along in the early stages in an endeavour to have the mare settle in a forward position. L Roche stated that approaching the winning post on the first occasion, when he noticed I'm Bulletproof maintaining a position away from the rail, he stated that rather than being caught wide, he allowed his mount to stride forward and cross that runner and assume the lead near the 1600m. He added that due to the pressure he had placed Brassy Belle under in the early stages to go forward and ultimately cross I m Bulletproof, when he attempted to restrain the mare, his mount commenced to race keenly and did not respond to his efforts. L Roche further stated that in the middle stages Brassy Belle continued to race keenly, did not respond to his efforts to restrain the mare and ultimately set a quicker tempo than what he had liked. L Roche stated that as a result, the mare was left without a finishing effort and weakened noticeably in the straight. Stewards advised L Roche that whilst they acknowledged that Brassy Belle was inclined to race keenly and that he had made some effort to restrain his mount, in tonight's circumstances, he should have made more of an effort to restrain Brassy Belle. Stable representative, Mr C Duckworth confirmed the instructions issued to L Roche and added hat the mare went quicker in front than they would have wished, but after hearing the explanations of L Roche, he was not overly critical with the manner in which the horse was ridden in the early and middle stages. A postrace veterinary examination of the mare revealed no abnormalities. Elatus slow to begin. For some distance approaching and passing the 100m, Elatus, which was finishing the race off, was awkwardly positioned close to the heels of Avroson and had to be steadied and shift to the outside of that runner to continue into clear running. Living Choice began awkwardly. Veravarti whilst the Stewards were satisfied that it did not affect his finishing position, nonetheless, rider, K McEvoy was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out hands and heels right to the winning post whenever possible. Scraps began awkwardly and then from a wide barrier, was shifted in across behind runners. RACE 7: Tooheys New Evening Star Handicap 1550m Legendary Luke a post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Make A Mark to be ridden more forward; led. Make A Mark raced keenly in the early stages. He's A Given pulled hard, got its head up and refused to settle throughout the early and middle stages.

5 5 RACE 8: Hyland Race Colours Handicap 1100m Alpen Rose raced very keenly, got its head up and refused to settle throughout the early and middle stages. Approaching the 400m, improved into a narrow position to the inside of Eccellere and then had to be checked when disappointed for that run when Eccellere shifted in marginally. A post-race veterinary examination of the mare revealed no abnormalities Tough As Teak slow to begin. Tough As Teak lost its near fore plate in running. A postrace veterinary examination of the mare revealed no abnormalities. Improvement laid in under pressure in the straight. Racy bounded on jumping. Racy raced keenly in the middles stages. B Melham reported that the mare was making an abnormal respiratory noise throughout the race. A post-race veterinary examination found the mare to be coughing. Trainer, Mr G Portelli was advised that a veterinary certificate, including the results of an endoscopic examination must be provided prior to racing again. Eccellere rider, T Berry pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137(b), for failing to ride his mount, the fourth placegetter, out to the end of the race. T Berry's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Monday, 26 th December 2016 and to expire on Saturday, 7 th January 2017 on which day he may ride. General: Apprentices D Panya, J Innes Jnr, and L Magorrian were spoken to regarding their failure to attend Apprentice School. GENERAL: Swab samples were taken from all winners and the following runners: Race 1: Charlie Chap, Gaulois, Goodfella (2), Talladega Knight. Race 2: Dortmund, Our Royal Egyptian, Our Barty, Thaad (2), Birdsong. Race 3: Jolie's Pearl, Cosmic Engine, Pleased, Unbridled Power. Race 4: Wide Acclaim, Deploy, Fanning, Pale Ale. Race 5: Chavish, Redouble. Race 6: Elatus, Living Choice (2), Veravarti. Race 7: Know How, Make A Mark, He's A Given. Race 8: Nahema, Modha, Improvement.
