1 SOLOS NEWSLETTER V O L U M E X X V I S S U E 3 November 2017 Death Valley '49ers Encampment The 68th Annual Death Valley '49ers Encampment is over for another year, and what a great time was enjoyed by the 40+ Solos in attendance. Due to National Park Service staffing challenges, the Sunset Campground at Furnace Creek in Death Valley did not open until November 3, 2017, much later than in previous years. Many of our pre-encampment get-together activities occurred from Pahrump, NV. Many members stayed at Preferred RV Resort or at Leroy's home, a few miles north of Preferred. Happy Hour was held at Betty Ogden's site at Preferred. Leroy hosted a potluck dinner/happy hour at his home. Some of the pre-encampment activities included: lunch and a tour at Sheri's Ranch Brothel in Pahrump; breakfast and parade viewing at Beatty Days in Beatty, NV; date shakes at China Ranch Date Farm & Bakery in Tecopa, CA; a trip to Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge followed by lunch at Longstreet Inn Casino, both in Amargosa Valley, NV; and wine tasting and lunch at Pahrump Valley Winery in Pahrump. The '49ers Encampment was a huge success. President Roy Kannada provided coffee for everyone each morning and hugs and mugs stretched for more than an hour some days. The weather was perfect! There were lots of excursions to enjoy including Aguereberry Point, the Charcoal Kilns, the Ghost Town of Skidoo, the grand re-opening ceremony of Keane Wonder Mill and Mine, Dante s View, Bad Water, pot luck dinner with the incoming wagon train, Shoshone Days and some great hikes. The wonderful evening entertainment included the Old West Trio, Mary Kaye, and The Messick Family. SOLOS Annual General Meeting Plan to come to the Annual General Meeting on Plomosa Road in Quartzsite. The meeting will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, January 22, If you have never been to Quartzsite you are in for a treat. By January 14th about 90 Solos will start gathering on BLM land. Lots of good fun and camaraderie. The Big Tent opens on Saturday, January 20th and will be open through Sunday, January 28th. The Big Tent has everything a person could want for their RV. Blue Ox and Roadmaster will have booths in the Big Tent and service facilities behind the tent. Of course the Too Crazy Ladies booth is also a popular stopping point to order name tags and the like Board of Directors President: Roy Kannada royk1072@gmail.com Vice President: Bob Svitak RJSvi@yahoo.com Secretary: Celeste Vaughters oriley95@yahoo.com Treasurer: Judy Holmes jholmes@dc.rr.com Inside this issue: Death Valley 49ers Encampment 1 AGM 1 Election of 2018 Officers 2 Kentucky Derby Party 2 58th Escapade 2 Pahrump Photos 2 Death Valley 49ers Encampment Photos 3
