1 Outstrip starts successful campaign 2.15 House Collection EBF Maiden, 4,528, 7f, July Course, June 22, good 1 OUTSTRIP (GB) Exceed And Excel GF 90p Mickael Barzalona Saeed bin Suroor 2 True Story (GB) Manduro GF 86p Chris Catlin Saeed bin Suroor 3 Showpiece (GB) Kyllachy GF 85p Dane O Neill Richard Hannon 2yo / 13 ran / / Won by 1? - nk 2012: Chesterfield (M Barzalona / M Al Zarooni) Winner owned by Godolphin, bred by Darley Outstrip holding True Story and Showpiece at bay. Photo Steven Cargill. This maiden was to be quite a key race leading up to future juvenile Group races, though it was not the race favourite, Showpiece, who would take race and move onto bigger and better things. Coming off a nice debut for third to Recanted at Newbury nine days earlier, the Hannon trainee had to settle for the same place again, behind two talented Godolphin newcomers. Outstrip, a well bred son of top class sprinter Exceed And Excel, proved decisively the best as he overcame a slow start from stall two to deliver a strong finish. He got to the lead well inside the last furlong, and ran on strongly to win by a length and a half. True Story was also tardy when the gates opened and did his best work at the finish, while Showpiece raced close to the pace and kicked for home two furlongs out hanging on to his lead until Outstrip took over. The form was given an immediate boost when True Story ran out an easy winner of a maiden on July 12 (beating Expert, another good juvenile, who won at Newmarket on July 27 and Nov 1), and Voice Of A Leader (winner next time out). 76 NM WINNERS A BOOK MASTER.indd :07

2 Outstrip was beaten on his subsequent start, but there was no disgrace in going down by a quarter of a length to Toormore in the Vintage Stakes (G2) at Goodwood. He returned to the winners enclosure after his next race, the Champagne Stakes (G2) over 7 furlongs at Doncaster in September. Coming with an impressive run from off the pace, Outstrip outclassed The Grey Gatsby to win by 3 lengths that day, with Cable Bay third. The latter re-opposed Outstrip in the Dewhurst Stakes (G1), run over the same distance here at Newmarket a month later. The two colts both ran well again, though not well enough to master the favourite War Command. He won by just over a length from Cable Bay, who was a length and a half ahead of Outstrip. The Dewhurst was Outsrtip s fourth outing and he would race once more as a juvenile, for a lucrative success some 5,500 miles west of Newmarket, at Santa Anita Park in California on November 1, when he met twelve rivals in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf (G1), run over a mile around two turns. The American favourite Bobby s Kitten, an impressive winner of the Pilgrim Stakes (G3) on his previous start, set a strong pace up front, something that suited Europeans more than him. Jockey Mike Smith, having his first ride in the Godolphin silks, held the colt up for a late challenge. Aidan O Brien s best candidate, Giovanni Boldoni, hit the front a furlong from the wire and was looking good for a win, but Outstrip found an extra gear and shot by him in the last few strides to win by half a length. Bobby s Kitten finished third, while other the two other Europeans were also rans ; Wilshire Boulevard (9th) and Shamshon (11th). Out of a Grade One winner Asi Siempre won 7 races in France / USA, her finest hour coming when she landed the Spinster Stakes (G1) over 9 furlongs at Keeneland as a four-year-old. Trained by Patrick Biancone, she beat Soul Search over the Polytrack. Her turf form was just as good, with a win in the Valley View Stakes (G3) also at Keeneland and a runner-up effort in the Garden City (G1) at Belmont Park proving the point. She may be remembered by many as the filly who was demoted from second to fourth in Round Pond s Breeders Cup Distaff (G1) at Churchill Downs. Asi Siempre finished by far the strongest that day, but she caused interference when switching for a clear run in the straight. Outstrip is her second foal Danehill Exceed And Excel Patrona OUTSTRIP (GB) gr c 2011 El Prado Asi Siempre Siempre Asia and the first to race. Emerald Bloodstock made a shrewd purchase at about the same time Outstrip went into training, as they bought his unraced half-sister Sapporo (Distorted Humor) for just 13,000 guineas at the 2012 Tattersalls December Sales. Siempre Asi (Silver Hawk) was well bred but never ran. Her pedigree meant she was given a chance in the paddocks, and she produced 5 winners from 5 runners, by far the best being Asi Siempre, and also became the grandam of Listed winner Dubase. The third dam, Turkish Treasure (Sir Ivor), trained by Vincent O Brien, won three of her five races as a juvenile, landing the 7-furlong Cherry Hinton Stakes (G3) at Newmarket (from Shapina) and the 6-furlong Park Stakes (G3) at Phoenix Park (from Relfo). Having run as if something was amiss when seventh in the Criterium des Pouliches (G1) at Longchamp (nowadays the Prix Marcel Boussac), Turkish Treasure was retired to stud. She became the dam of 5 winners in all, four of them were black type winners and one was a black type placed winner. The best of them was Norfolk Stakes (G2) winner Magic Mirror (Nureyev). Turkish Treasure is also the grandam of Almushtarak, who won the Sandown Mile (G2) and was second in the Sussex Stakes (G1) at Goodwood and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (G1) at Ascot, where he was runner-up to Dubai Millennium. 77 NM WINNERS A BOOK MASTER.indd :07

3 Azrur the gelding delivers 2.50 Poets House Handicap, 5,175, 7f, July Course, June 22, good 1 AZRUR (IRE) 81 Sir Percy GF 85 Hayley Turner Michael Bell 2 Veeraya (GB) Rail Link GF 80 Dane O Neill William Haggas 3 Al Udeid (IRE) Verglas GF 75 Pat Cosgrave Kevin Ryan 3yo / 11 ran / / Won by nse 2? 2012: Campanology (S Levey / R Hannon) Winner owned by Godolphin, bred by Darley Having blown his chances by being a handful, to say the least, in the preliminaries to his re appearance on the Rowley Mile course on May 4 (seventh of eight to Glean) and raced too keenly when sixth of seven at Newbury two weeks later, the att ractive runner Azrur was given a break and gelded before this contest, where he was also wearing a hood for the first time. Positively ridden, he won in determined style, despite hanging right under pressure. Hayley Turner had the son of Derby winner Sir Percy prominent throughout and sent Azrur, gelded and with a hood for the first time, bounces back. Photo Steven him into the lead five furlongs from home. Veeraya, also a first time gelding but making his seasonal debut, came from off the pace to deliver the only challenge, and he was held by just a nose. Al Udeid, runner-up to Whipper Snapper (seventh here) two weeks earlier, was a non-threatening third. Azrur was so much more focused than when racing as a colt but, though he ran two respectable races subsequently, he failed to follow up. He was sixth to Breden over a mile at this course in August (Veeraya third) and seventh to Ocean Tempest at Yarmouth in September. His runner-up Al Udeiud did better, going on to run two good races in 6-furlong handicaps at Epsom in August, finishing second to Fortinbrass and winning from Desert Command. Azrur was sold to JC Fretwell Racing for 18,000 guineas at the Tattersalls Horses In training Sales. Fretwell s horses are trained by David Barron and Ed McMahon. Strong Newmarket connections Tiger Spice, trained in Newmarket by William Haggas, won over 9 furlongs at Wolverhampton as a juvenile and finished third three times. She is also the dam of Spiceupyourlife, a daughter of Sakhee s Secret who won once from just three starts. Her 2012 colt by Nayef was bought back for 40,000 guineas at this year s Tattersalls July Sales. Up And About (Barathea) was also trained in Newmarket, by Sir Mark Prescott. She won a 15-furlong maiden handicap by 7 lengths at three, incidentally also at Wolverhampton. She is the dam of 6 winners, including Take It To The Max (Bahamian Bounty), a winner of 6 races who ran third in the Glasgow Stakes (LR) at Hamilton Park, and Wake Up Call (Noverre), who won 4 times and was runner-up in the Boadicea Stakes (LR) at Newmarket. The third dam, Upend (Main Reef) won the St. Simon Stakes (G3) at Newbury and Galtres Stakes (LR) at York. Trained by Sir Henry Cecil, she became a successful broodmare. Her best daughter, Musicanna (Cape Cross), won the Atalanta Stakes (LR) at Sandown and Mark of Esteem Sir Percy Percy s Lass AZRUR (IRE) b g 2010 Royal Applause Tiger Spice Up And About 110,000 Tattersalls Oct 2011 Buyer A O Nerses Vendor Kildaragh Stud, Ireland was third to Peeress in the Sun Chariot Stakes (G1) and third to Rajeem in the Falmouth Stakes (G1) at Newmarket. Musicanna was also runner-up to Echelon in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes (G3) at Epsom. She was trained by James Fanshawe, so one can safely say we are dealing with a family of strong Newmarket connections here, though it has also made an international impact, since Upend is the grandam of the Hungarian trained Overdose, a Champion 3yo European Sprinter. 78 NM WINNERS A BOOK MASTER.indd :07

4 Ribbons keeps perfect record 3.35 Paddocks House EBF Fillies H, 6,469, 8f, July Course, June 22, good 1 RIBBONS (GB) 79 Manduro GF 84p Hayley Turner James Fanshawe 2 Zeyran (IRE) Galileo GF 80 Pat Cosgrave Lady Cecil 3 Macchiara (GB) Medicean GF 75 Chris Catlin Rae Guest 3yo+ / 6 ran / / Won by nk : Punita (M Al Zarooni / M Barzalona) Winner owned by Elite Racing Club, bred by Elite Racing Club Ribbons won mile maiden with ease at Kempton on her only start as a juvenile, beat Trapeze by a length to win a handicap over the same distance at Goodwood on her first start this year, and maintained her unbeaten with this, somewhat more trying, win against Zeyran, who was coming off a handicap win at Yarmouth. Ribbons, giving jockey Hayley Turner a quick double after having won a photo finish with Azrur in the previous contest, raced prominently all the way, but it was only close home that she got her head in front. Zeyran had led from five furlongs out, and was out-battled to the tune of a neck shot Macchiara, like the first two home also trained in Newmarket, was just a length behind in third. Two and a half weeks later it was her turn to win at Yarmouth. Ribbons next ran in a handicap at Goodwood, where she was stretching out to 9 furlongs while racing off 86. She was held up on the Sussex downs, and came with a fine run from off the pace to win again, beating previous Lingfield winner Rhagori by almost three lengths. A step up to Listed company did not seem too ambitions, as Ribbons had four wins from as many runs and was showing progressive form. She took part in the John Musker Fillies Stakes (LR) over 10 furlongs at Yarmouth in September, finishing well to just get up for third, 6 lengths behind the David Simcock trained Miss You Too. Thus, her winning streak ended, but this well bred filly is certainly one to look forward to in Ribbons holds off Zeyran for this win at Newmarket in June. Photo Steven Cargill. Out of Soviet Song s sister Sister Act, a sister to Soviet Song, won over a mile as a three-year-old. Like Soviet Song and Ribbons, she was also trained by Fanshawe. She was also placed twice, from eight starts. Ribbons is her second foal. Kalinka, a daughter of Nureyev s son Soviet Star, was given her Russian name possibly in honour of a well known vodka brand though more likely after composer Ivan Larionov s song Kalinka, which means snowball tree. Kalinka the racehorse won a 6-furlong maiden for Paul Cole as a juvenile. Her career was relatively low key but her days as a broodmare put her in a different league. Her daughter Soviet Song (Marju) was a top class miler. Winner of Monsun Manduro Mandellicht RIBBONS (GB) b f 2010 Marju Sister Act Kalinka 7 races from two to six, she captured the Fillies Mile (G1) as a juvenile, and went on to beat the boys in the Sussex Stakes (G1) and take the Falmouth Stakes (G1) twice. Baralinka (Barathea), another daughter of Kalinka, won 4 races, and Kalinka s son Penzance won 8 races on the flat and over hurdles, including the prestigious Triumph Hurdle (G1) at Cheltenham. Trained by Fanshawe on the flat, he joined Alan King for his hurdling career. The third dam, Tralthee (Tromos), won the Rockfel Stakes as a juvenile (from just two starts) and Lupe Stakes at three for trainer Luca Cumani. She was from the same family as back-to-back Santa Anita Handicap (G1) winner Milwaukee Brew, who is standing at Adena Springs in Canada. After chasing the early leaders, he was asked to pick up as they approached the final furlong, and took the lead despite hanging right. This did not stop him from going forward though, and he ran on strongly to the line, holding the late charging filly Aetna safely at bay. The runner-up, carrying the lowest weight and ridden by a good 3lb claimer, had been a solid handicap winner at Newcastle three weeks earlier. She was receiving 17 pounds form Dutch Masterpiece, who was given a two-month break after this success, leading up the Flying Five Stakes (G3) in Ireland on August 24. He took another step up, winning by half a length from fellow UK raider Hamza (Newmarket winner, May 5) and Russian Soul. With a pattern race win to his name, he was stepped up in class again in October, contesting the highly competitive Prix de l Abbaye (G1) at Longchamp. Whether it was the softish ground, the course, or simply a loss of form, that worked against him is hard to say. While his Curragh victim Hamza was third Dutch Masterpiece beat just three of home. Family of Desert Deer, Branston Abby The Terrier won twice over 5 furlongs at Redcar as a juvenile. She was placed third five times, and is also the dam of Beachwood Bay (Tobougg), a winner of 3 races at Southwell (6 and 7 fur.) in 2011 / 2012 (still in training), and Miss Bunter (Bahamian Bounty), who won 3 races at Wolverhampton (5 and 6 fur.), the most recent in January, Branston Gem (So Factual) was placed over 5 furlongs at Lingfield Park as a juvenile. She is the dam of 4 winners; The Terrier, Braille, Diamond Blade and Wear Em Out. The third dam, Branston Jewel (Prince Sabo) was a sharp juvenile, winning a 5-furlong maiden at Windsor on her debut and a conditions event over the same distance at York next time out, before running second to Ella Nico in the Prix d Arenberg (G3) over 6 furlongs at Chantilly. The dam of Cammidge Trophy (LR) winner Falcon Hill, Branston Jewel was a half-sister to Sandown Mile (G2) winner Desert Deer and Branston Abby, a multiple Listed winning sprinter who won 24 races in England, France and Germany. The latter had taken the lead two furlongs out and fought back really well once headed but Top Joker, ridden by this year s Newmarket Winners Champion Jockey Mickael Barzalona, held on to his lead. The newcomer Disco Inferno was was also right in the mix through the final furlong and ran a race full of promise in third. Somewhat surprisingly, he was still a maiden at the end of the turf season, having been second twice and third once in subsequent maiden events. Shaishee was also a maiden at the end of the campaign. He was runner-up again on both of his subsequent outings. Top Joker, who was gelded after this win, did not race again in He was second to stable companion Chesterfield in the 7-furlong maiden at the corresponding fixture last year the race won by Outstrip this time around. Classy Australian family French Bid won 4 races over 6 furlongs in Australia, including the Swettenham Stud Stakes (G2), Kevin Hayes Stakes (LR) and Quezette Stakes (LR). She is also the dam of Top Joker s close relation Forum Magnum (Elusive Quality), who won a 5.5-furlong maiden and was Listed placed in France at two, Cavalaire Bay (Red Ransom), winner of 4 races from 42 runs and G3 placed over 12 furlongs in Australia, and Kind Invitation (New Approach), an interesting juvenile filly who won her only start this year, beating Water Hole by half a length over a mile at Kempton Park in mid-november. My Crystal Star, a well bred daughter of the Nijinsky son Copper Kingdom, won over a mile. She is also the dam of Wyso, a useful performer who won three races on the bounce (6 and 7 furlongs). The third dam, Nancress (Namnan) won 6 races from 5 to 7.5 furlongs, including the Jewel handicap (LR). She was also the dam of Blue Diamond Prelude (G3) winner My Flashing Star (Snippets), 6-time winning sprinter My Fabulous Star (Scenic) and Viveasha (Last Tycoon), a 5-furlong winning juvenile who became the dam of Queensland Derby (G1) winner Lachlan River (Desert King). Photo Steven Cargill. Capturing a fiercely competitive sprint handicap like this on the July Course is not easy, and My Kingdom, winning for the seventh time in his career, did well to fend off the only three-year-old in the field, Nadrin, for a game win. Well ridden by Harry Bentley, he was always close up and took the lead a furlong out. Nardin, who had been second to Midnight Flower at on his seasonal debut over this course two weeks earlier, came from off the pace to give chase. He pressed My Kingdom all the way to the winning post but could never get by. Johnny Castle, carrying top weight, also came from the back and claimed third. My Kingdom had raced four times previously this season, and he showed clear signs of a return to form when third to Pategonia in a Lingfield handicap eleven days earlier. He could not win again in 2013 but produced three really game performances in defeat, to take second to Colonel Mak at Pontefract and to Brocklebank at Epsom, and when third behind Saloomy at Newmarket on August 23. Previously trained by Hughie Morrison, David Nicholls, Patrick Morris and Ian Williams, the son of 2,000 Guineas (G1) winner King s Best has done all his winning over 6 and 7 furlongs, at Newmarket, Goodwood, Chester, Wolverhampton and Brighton and been runner-up twelve times and third five times, from 65 starts. That s what we can call a true servant to the British racing scene. He was entered for the Doncaster Bloodstock Sales in November, but withdrawn. Half-brother to Yellow Rosebud Nebraas, unraced, is the dam of 5 winners from 5 runners, the best being Yellow Rosebud (Jeremy), who has won the Coolmore Stud Concorde Stakes (G3) and Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial (G3) for top Irish trainer Dermot Weld. Soon to turn five, Yellow Rosebud stays in training in Seeharn (Pivotal), another smart daughter of Nebraas, won the Ballyogan Stud Balanchine Stakes (LR) and two other races. Arjuzah (Ahonoora) won twice, including the Sceptre Stakes (LR), and ran third in the Challenge Stakes (G2) at Newmarket. She is the dam of 6 winners, clearly the best being Golden Jubilee Stakes (G1) winner Malhub, who was also runner-up in the Nunthorpe Stakes (G1). His half-brother Dhaamer (Dubai Destination) won 6 times in England / USA. He stayed a lot further though and peaked in the 12-furlong Sunset Handicap (G3) at Hollywood Park. Furthermore, Arjuzah is the grandam of this year s Hackwood Stakes (G3) winner Heeraat and Listed winner Ambiance. Porcini, purchased from the Cheveley Park Stud two years earlier, went through the ring at the 2012 December Sales in Newmarket, but came home unsold after the bidding had stopped on 15,000 guineas. It was probably just as well, as her owners PM Racing were rewarded for giving her another season in their yellow and black silks. She carried them to victory twice, in this handicap at Newmarket and in a similar contest over 14 furlongs at Sandown Park on her next start. William Carson rode the well bred filly on both occasions. He sent her straight to the lead at Newmarket, and she made all for quite a comfortable win over her joint top-weight, Flashman, who was never far behind and kept on well for second ahead of off-the-pace runner Thecornishcowboy, a winner two starts earlier. Porcini had run well over this course also on her previous outing, when fifth, just over four lengths behind Taglietelle over 15 furlongs in June. She was given a month s break after her July Course success, and followed up by racing prominently again though this Porcini cantering home the winner, unperturbed. Photo Steven Cargill. time chasing the leader at Sandown shot Good Boy Jackson set the pace at the Esher venue, at one point going around twenty lengths clear, but he faded up the home straight and was eventually tailed off. So, in effect, we can say Porcini made all. She passed the hare three furlongs out and stayed on resolutely to win by 1.75 lengths from Into The Wind. Her next assignment was a strong staying handicap at Doncaster in August, when Porcini finished fifth to Shwaiman, and she ended her season running as if something was amiss when eased behind Oriental Fox in the Cesarewitch Trial Hcap on the Rowley Mile course in September. The pedigree of a broodmare Portal won 3 races, including the EBF Alice Keppel Handicap (LR) at Goodwood at three, having previously captured a handicap over the same course and distance and broken her maiden over 7 furlongs at Folkestone at two. White Palace (Shirley Heights) ran just four times and won a mile maiden at Nottingham as a three-year-old. She was also in the care of Fanshawe, as was her daughter Palatial (Green Desert), a winner of 4 races over 7 furlongs (three at Newmarket) who became the dam of Fanshawe s high class filly Spacious (Nayef), winner of the May Hill Stakes (G2) and Windsor Forest Stakes (G2) and placed in five Group One events. Spacious ran second to Natagora in the 1,000 Guineas (G1).
