Students will gain an understanding f: Days and weeks celebrated r cmmemrated in Australia (including Australia Day, Harmny Day,Australian Citizenship Day, ANZAC Day, NAIDOC week) and the imprtance f symbls and emblems (Australian Curriculum, Histry, Year 3, ACHHK063) This is an individual and whle class activity. Identify that the purpse f the learning is t build yur students understanding and appreciatin f their place in Australia as Australian citizens. Althugh these are extremely difficult cncepts fr Grade 3 students t grasp, yu might find it useful t wrk with yur students t develp their understanding f what the Australian Citizenship Affirmatin actually is and explre the differences between an affirmatin and a pledge f cmmitment. Discuss with yur students whether r nt they wuld like t rganise an event that invlves them taking the Australian Citizenship Affirmatin, r an event that invlves them presenting their wn custmised Australian Citizenship Affirmatins. Yur students can chse either, r bth, r culd decide themselves hw they wuld like t d this, such as designing and creating their wn display within the classrm r a specific area within the schl. (See the activity Plan yur wn Australia Day fr mre infrmatin n rganising an event.) Encurage yur students t find ut mre abut the Australian Citizenship Affirmatin (Refer t Wrksheet 1- Make yur wn AUSTRALIAN CITIZENSHIP AFFIRMATION). Brainstrm with yur students hw yu might rganise the class t plan an event that invlves the Australian Citizenship Affirmatin. Read the examples in Wrksheet 2 with yur students and discuss the different interpretatins f what it means t be Australian that are published in these examples. Discuss with yur students hw they might apprach their wn pster. CREATE: Srt Out Yur students will need t rganise themselves and the tasks they need t cmplete. At this stage, it is time fr yur students t begin t develp their persnal Australian Citizenship Affirmatin (See Wrksheet 2). DISCUSS and Make Cnnectins Encurage yur students t make cnnectins with what they have discussed in class, what their plans will be and hw this cnnects with their wn prir knwledge. As yur students begin t shape their new thughts and ideas, they shuld be refining their wn Australian Citizenship Affirmatin (Wrksheet 2) and develp this int a learning artefact that shws their understanding f the cncepts and ideas related t the inquiry questin. Encurage yur students t share their new ideas with thers and t cmpare ntes, discuss cnclusins, and share their experiences with each ther. 2
