2 . MEMBERSHIP DUES Jan 1 - Dec 31 $25 - Family $15 - Individual $5 - Sponsored Youth Sometimes walking away has nothing to do with weakness, and everything to do with strength. We walk away not because we want others to realize our worth and value, but because we finally realize our own. President s Message A Note from the President Hello Fellow Members, Thank You for allowing me to become President of our wonderful family oriented club! I feel very blessed and look forward to working closely with all of you. We had a great business meeting with a good turn out last month and are very excited to host the Area 8 National Area show once again. Dates for the show are July 31 - Aug 2 in Spanaway at the Tacoma Unit. We have members already out searching for sponsorships and preparing t make this year even better than ever! We also get the privilege of adding 12 of the carriage driving classes to our show this year.. Another exciting thing we are going to try this year on a trial basis (which I think will be very successful) is hosting an aisle at the show to promote our farms and stallions. We will get more info out on that as soon as possible as well. It will be a great opportunity to have a gathering place and be able to show off our farms and horses, past and present. Some members are working on setting up a date and time to have a Carriage Driving Clinic with Dorothy Whiteman who has offered to help us all learn about carriage driving. More details on that to follow. Also, we have until the next meeting to take Vice President nominations, so get them in if you are unable to attend and we will vote in a new VP at that time. Our next meeting will Dec 20th at 1:00 at Elmer s in Tacoma. Don t forget it is an Ugly Sweater Theme so wear an ugly sweater. We have prizes for best/worst sweater. LOL!! Should be lot s of fun. Hope to see you there. Your President, Lisa Pichler COMBINED DRIVING NEWS Happ s in Ethel, WA is now Happy Trails Arena. 3 PREVENTING WINTER COLIC During the cold weather of Winter, it can sometimes be a challenge to keep your horses well hydrated during the extremely cold weather. Here are a few suggestions for keeping your horses well hydrated. 1. Keeping your horse hydrated: Your horses can become very dehydrated by not drinking enough water. Many horses don t like to drink cold water or don t drink enough water during the cold weather. By having a tank heater in their water trough to keep the water temperature at or close to 45 degrees, the horses are more inclined to drink their water. Another strategy for keeping your horse hydrated is by feeding mashes. Bran is the traditional mash base but can be made nutritionally balanced by adding senior feeds. Another way is to provide water is to provide beet pulp well saturated with water. An other alternative is to make a slurry of their grain/mash and give it to them right away. 2. Provide as much turn out as possible: It is a well established fact that a horse is kept in a stall for most of the day is more likely to colic than one who is turned out. Pasture living keeps a horse s gut moving. By the horse moving around or being physically active, the continual grazing is beneficial as this is what the horse was designed for. For those horses who are kept in stalls with limited turnout, if possible, three smaller feedings are suggested instead of two larger feedings. This does make it easier for the horse to digest their feedings. This mimics the natural feeding patterns of a horse on pasture. 3. Feed plenty of forage: When pasture dies back in winter, hay replaces grass as the foundation of a horse s diet. A horse on adequate pasture full-time will be continuously digesting water-rich grass, ideal for preventing colic. In winter, meals of dry hay are more common and can be associated with colic. Not only is drier forage more likely to create intestinal blockages, but the gut slows in the hours spent waiting for hay to be served twice a day. Horses will be burning more calories in cold weather to stay warm and may possibly drop weight as a result. It is better to increase the amount of forage instead the amount of grain during this time. The gut healthy hay will help with the digestion as the additional concentrates/grain can lead to gas colic as the high calorie feed ferments in the gut. 4. Be vigilant when storms roll in: It seems like when ever there are storms or a sudden change in the weather, there appears to be an increase in colic cases during the winter. With this in mind, keep an eye on the forecast and be extra vigilant when a storm front is moving in. Items that are needed and often not provided at shelters are shampoo, tooth paste, tooth brushes, combs, lotions, etc. If you would like to donate even partial bottles, they would be appreciated. Please bring them to the next meeting. We also take donations all year long. They can be dropped off at any AMHA or AMHR show at our stalls or where we are camping. Thank you all.
