2 ORGANIC DAIRY CATTLE Foreword HJ Drake & Partners, Blandford Today s dispersal sale arises following the decision by the Drake family to change their farming policy and cease milk production. The herd was established in 1958 following the purchase of Longston Farm with full Organic certification (Organic Farmers & Growers) achieved in The herd comprises good predominately home bred dams which are showing good condition and size. Replacements are calved at approximately 2 ½ years. An all year round calving policy has been adopted. Dams are served by AI to a British Friesian (Dorset Cattle Breeders) and run with a Angus sweeper. The herd is managed on permanent grass leys through the summer months and wintered in cubicles. The cows are fed on home produced forage with only a small amount of concentrate fed during milking (herringbone parlour). The cows have not been treated with Dry Cow Therapy. Inputs are low with a yield of 5,000 litres achieved off 1 tonne of concentrate. Cell counts are low with a current average of 180. The herd is not NMR recorded. Dams have been milk sample cell counted and home recorded for the purpose of this sale. Dams sold being PD+ will only be warranted if over 12 weeks in-calf at the time of sale. Any claim under this guarantee must be made in writing, and supported by a veterinary surgeon s certificate, to the Auctioneers within seven weeks of the date of the sale. Herd Health The herd is in a 12 month TB testing area Last TB Test: 3 rd August The herd is naturally BVD & Lepto free. There has never been a recorded case of Johnes in the herd.
