5 Use of the best genetics available from each breed in the crossbreeding rotation is critical to success. The SelectCROSS approach starts by using elite Jersey sires on purebred Holstein cows. Pictured above are 2-way crosses at New Heights Dairy. The next step is to use elite Montbeliarde sires on the Jersey x Holstein cross offspring. Pictured below are three-way-crosses at New Heights. A good Holstein base, made by selecting high-quality Holstein genetics, is critical for crossbreeding success. When choosing Holstein sires, I choose the very best. You also have to use the best genetics available from each breed in the crossbreeding rotation after that. My favorite cross right now is the Holstein x Jersey x Montbeliarde three-way. This cross combines the high production of Holsteins, the high components and reproduction advantages of the Jersey breed and the reproduction of Montbeliardes. Purebred Montbeliardes can t compete on their own from a production standpoint, but when you put the three together you get a well-rounded animal. We measure dollars of product produced per day, and the crossbreds consistently have the advantage. Brent Czech, New Heights Dairy, MN EXPLANATION OF MONTBELIARDE TRAITS Montbeliarde genetic evaluations are June 2018, French evaluations processed by INRA (French Agronomic Research Institute). All type trait information is on an in-country basis, with summarization equal to their production dates. ISU = SYNTHESIS INDEX ISU presents a composite look at all criteria based on the following breakdown: 5% Longevity, 18% Reproduction, 14.5% Udder Health, 2.3% Fat Percent, 7.1% Protein Percent, 4.2% Fat, 31.4% Protein, 5% Milking and 12.5% Type. DAUGHTER FERTILITY Fertility data on sires daughters is expressed around a mean of 0 with a +/- 1 standard deviation. Higher values are favorable. CALVING EASE (INDEX) The Calving Index is based on the percentage of easy calvings on first parity cows. Higher values are most favorable. Sires greater than 89 percent are easy calving, less than percent is not recommended for use on heifers. UDDER AND FEET AND LEG INDEXES, LINEAR TYPE TRAITS Linear type traits are expressed around a mean of and a +/- 12 standard deviation.
6 A MODERNIZED APPROACH TO CROSSBREEDING BACKGROUND For several decades, dairy owners in the U.S. have attempted to utilize crossbreeding with their Holstein cows hoping to harness the positive affects of heterosis to improve reproductive efficiency, calving ability, fi tness and longevity, while also reducing the mature size of the cow to lower maintenance costs. HOLSTEIN Holsteins are world-renown for milk production and udder conformation. The goal of any managed dairy crossbreeding program should be to: maximize heterosis by using a three-breed rotation. utilize breeds that have suffi cient genetic options and development to offer a broad selection of elite sires. build on the strengths of each breed in the rotation and properly select to overcome the breed weaknesses. produce cows that calve easily, transition into production with no issues, breed back easily and stay productive in the herd for many years, while maintaining a profi table level of milk production and milk solids. create consistent cows that fi t into the operation s housing and milking systems. MONTBELIARDE The Montbeliarde breed excels in reproductive effi ciency and Productive Life. They possess excellent body condition, feet and legs and have a strong will to milk. JERSEY The Jersey breed excels in calving ability, reproductive effi ciency, milk solids and Productive Life. Select Sires has supported extensive crossbreeding research. Armed with this data and years of experience, we recommend a modernized approach to crossbreeding SelectCROSS JERSEY x HOLSTEIN The cross starts by using elite Jersey sires on purebred Holstein cows. JEHOMO x HOLSTEIN The resulting three-way cross is bred back to Holstein to continue the rotation. JEHO x MONTBELIARDE The next step is to use elite Montbeliarde sires on the Jersey x Holstein cross offspring. 02 GETTING STARTED Based on years of experience, the SelectCROSS approach focuses on a structured three-breed rotation with elite genetics from major breeds to maximize heterosis. Holstein, Jersey and Montbeliarde are three of the largest breeds in the world for genetic development. Use elite sires with pure descent from each parent breed for more predictable outcomes and consistency. This is currently a challenge for some active Jerseys and many Viking Red sires. Protect for the weaknesses and build on the strengths of each breed in the rotation. Start the rotation with purebred (no generation count) Jersey sires with greater than +20 Jersey Udder Index (JUI ) to build the proper udder for a high-producing Holstein x Jersey cross cow. Breed this cross to Montbeliarde sires with a Calving Ease score greater than 89 and an Udder score greater than. Your Select Sires representative is available to help you develop a crossbreeding program that meets the goals as outlined above. Greater profits through crossbreeding are just a phone call away. SelectCROSS is a trademark of Select Sires Inc. Jersey Udder Index and JUI are trademarks of the American Jersey Cattle Association.
