Pegasus Limb Phasing, how can it be used and what will it tell me?
ETB Pegasus Limb Phasing How can it be used and what will it tell me? * For Precision Riding* ETB Pegasus Limb Phasing is a training and diagnostic tool that measurably characterises the way your horse creates its stride. It does this by recording the following: 1.Stride duration (i.e. rhythm) 2.Stride length 3.Stride speed 4.Temporal limb phasing What is Temporal Limb Phasing? Temporal limb phasing monitors the degree of cannon swing of each leg within a stride. This allows each leg pattern to be monitored individually and/or in relation to each other. Relating each leg to each other gives us information on how the horse creates its stride: i.e. how quickly and how far away from each other each leg moves to produce the stride. As training is generally about altering the horses stride to produce different levels of desired effects and movements, then leg patterns form an important landmark point.
For Show Jump Horses It delivers objective data of the effect your training has had on the horse, specifically Rhythm (stride duration) Suppleness Stride length Symmetry Degree of collection It can tell you: The optimum rhythm for this horse in canter Steadiness of rhythm through extensions and collections The effect of the rider on the horse s stride length What effect different training aids have on stride parameters It provides quantitative information to share with: Vets so they know what is normal for the horse Riders are they achieving what the trainer/vet wanted? Owners so they know the horse is progressing Pegasus can be used ridden or unridden in any weather. The following are examples of the answers to some of the above and comparisons that can be made between horses at different levels. Key to Graphs Shaded areas show: walk - yellow trot turquoise right canter/gallop - violet left canter/gallop - pink Stride parameters: duration - purple length - red speed - black Limbs: left fore - blue right fore - green right hind - light blue left hind - amber Please Note: the left hind leg line (amber) will always appear at the very bottom of the graph, except during the left canter when the right hind leg line (light blue) will. Results are also given in the form of four (walk, trot, left and right canter) statistical tables but only graphs have been used for demonstration purposes within.
The optimum rhythm for this horse in canter Fact: Foals establish their preferred stride duration in each gait and this remains with them as they grow. To achieve optimum performance it is best to maintain the stride duration at which the horse is most efficient. Horse 1 competing Show Jumping at National Affiliated: The optimum rhythm for this horse to canter at is approximately 0.6s. If the horse is not ridden at this rhythm then it will not be working at its optimum performance. Horse 2 Show Jumping phase of Pre-Novice Eventing: The optimum rhythm for this horse to canter at is approximately 0.6s
Steadiness of rhythm through extensions and collections Fact: Keeping the rhythm through extension and collection allows a horse to remain balanced. As a result the horse can work more from behind, while staying on the bit in a light contact and maintaining self-carriage. H orse 1 competing Show Jumping at National Affiliated: The consistent stride duration (level purple line) shows this horse can maintain a steady rhythm between collections and extensions. H orse 2 Show Jumping phase of Pre-Novice Eventing: The stride duration is slightly inconsistent in areas of collection and extension (see red circle). This indicates that there is room for improvement. Maintaining a steady rhythm through collection and extension is important so that the horse is not on the forehand and the rider does not have an unbalanced horse in front of a fence.
The effect of the rider on the horse s stride length Fact: Getting your horse to the right take off area in front of a fence can make the difference between jumping a fence successfully or having it down. Knowing how much the rider can alter the horse s stride on your approach is a key element to this H orse 1 competing Show Jumping at National Affiliated: This graph shows that this horse has a maximum canter stride length of approximately 3 metres and can be shortened to 2 metres. H orse 2 Show Jumping phase of Pre-Novice Eventing: This horse has a maximum canter stride length of approximately 4 metres and can be shortened to 3 metres. At that minimum it is still more length than the show jumping horse. If this horse were able to shorten its stride further it would lead to more accurate riding; allowing a rider greater control and time in front of a fence to make decisions. This would in turn provide a greater chance of jumping successfully. Degree of collection
Reminder for canter limb pattern; the outside hind pushes off, then the other hind leg and opposite foreleg should move together (referred to as the diagonal pair) with the leading fore leg finishing. For example in left canter the pattern will be RH, LH and RF together and LF. H orse 1 competing Show Jumping at National Affiliated: The right canter has a better level of collection than higher limb phasing values of each limb on the right. the left. This is apparent from the Left Canter Values Right Canter Values Left Fore 59% Right Fore 28% Left Hind 24% Right Hind 0% (reference leg) Right Fore 64% Left Fore 32% Right Hind - 30% Left Hind 0% (reference leg) This occurs because the more collected horse pushes more from behind, lightening itself in front and as a result the limb movements appear later in the stride cycle. The leading forelimb is a particularly good indicator for this. In cases where horses are displaying a high level of collection the leading forelimb will be greater than 60%. The other factor to look at within the canter is the diagonal pair. In the right canter the horses diagonal pair are closely coupled (dark and light blue lines are on top of each other) but in the left canter the diagonal pair (green and amber lines) are slightly decoupled, with the hind limb landing before the forelimb. This may be a strong attribute as to why the horse s left canter is less collected. With training it may be possible to improve this. Graph showing stride duration and limb phasing H orse 2 Show Jumping phase of Pre-Novice Eventing:
This horse, when compared to the show jumper, does not demonstrate the same degree of collection. This is clearly highlighted by the horse s lower values. Low values indicate th at the horse is completing his stride quickly and as a result there is a lack of cadence. Left Canter Values Left Fore 59% Right Fore 34% Left Hind 24% Right Hind 0% (reference leg) Right Canter Values Right Fore 61% Left Fore 30% Right Hind - 22% Left Hind 0% (reference leg) It is particularly noticeable that this horse s diagonal pairs are more spread from each other than Horse 1 and it is likely that it is this characteristic that if improved could assist the horse to be more collected. Graph showing stride duration and limb phasing
