4 General Information and Rules ADS General Information & Rules 1. The Moore County Driving Club, the show committee, and the owners of the property known as Big Sky Farm will not be responsible for any claim resulting from injury or injuries to any person, equine, or loss or damage to property incurred on the show grounds. All persons riding on any vehicle MUST sign an A.D.S waiver and Big Sky Farm waiver. Competitors in violation are subject to disqualification from the show. 2. Any dog that is not restrained by a leash will be confined by the Show Officials and a $75.00 retrieval fee will be assessed. 3. The combined driving hazards/obstacles located on the facility are OFF LIMITS TO EVERYONE. If any horse/pony is seen/caught by management or show officials within a hazard/obstacle all persons associated with that horse/pony will be ELIMINATED from show and told to leave grounds immediately. 4. Late entries might not be listed in the program. a. An ENTRY is defined as a combination of horse(s) or ponies(s), vehicle and driver, which has been assigned a specific entry number. Any change in this combination will be considered as a new entry. b. All checks and payments are to be made payable to: Moore County Driving Club. c. The American Driving Society Disclaimer (provided in Prize List Online) must be signed by every competitor/participant including the driver and each person who rides with a driver on a carriage not only during the actual competition but including any time from arrival at the competition to departure. See Show Secretary for additional copies. d. Every participant in the Carriage Classic in the Pines is responsible for having knowledge of, and is subject to, the current ADS. Rulebook (2018). e. The show committee reserves the right to decline any entry and to return any fee before or during the competition without being liable for compensation. f. The show committee reserves the right to combine, divide, or cancel classes at its own discretion. g. The entry fee will be refunded if a class is canceled. 5. Awards and Championships a. Points will be awarded as follows 1 st place-6 points, 2 nd place-5 points, 3 rd place-4 points, 4 th place-3 points, 5 th place-2 points, 6 th place-1 point. b. In classes with fewer than (6) entries, all placing points will be adjusted for the size of the class; 5 entries: 1 st place-5 points, 2 nd place-4 points, 3 rd place-3 points and so on; 4 entries: 1 st place-4 points, 2 nd place-3 points, 3 rd place-2 points; 3 entries; 1 st place-3 points, 2 nd place-2 points and etc. c. To be eligible for Division Championships and Awards, a competitor must enter and be judged in every class of that division. d. No Championship Points will be awarded for entries in specialty classes. e. If a tie in a championship points is to be decided, the following will be used: the best placing in the reinsmanship class. A tie for reserve any be decided by a coin flip if all parties agree. f. To be eligible for champion, a competitor must be entered and complete the five classes that constitute their division. 6. Any questions or dispute not covered by these Rules and Regulations will be referred to the Technical Delegate to be brought to the Judge or Show Manager for a decision. 7. The Judge s decision shall be final.

5 8. Removing the bridle from an animal harnessed to a vehicle or leaving on animal unattended while hitched anywhere on the show grounds will result in immediate elimination. 9. Junior division open to whips 18 years of age or younger as of Jan years of age or younger to be accompanied by an adult. Helmets required for all juniors. 10. No cantering/galloping will be allowed in any pleasure show class. A break to a canter is defined as four full strides; six full strides or more is prolonged canter or gallop (ADS article 211). In case of multiple turnout, all horses must break for a penalty to be incurred. ADS Eligibility Horse: Pony: VSE: Junior: Utility: Old Guard Class: Novice Horse & Pony: Maiden Equines over 14.2 (58 / 147 cm) in height will be classified as horse. Equines 14.2 hands and under. If pony class is split large and small; small pony not to exceed 12.2 hands (50 / 147cm) large pony are those ponies over 12.2 not to exceed 14.2 Equines under 9.3 hands (39 / 99 cm). Open: Open to all drivers and horses/ponies. Any Whip who is under 19 years old as of January 1, Helmets required. Open to horses and ponies put to a 2 or 4 wheel marathon type vehicle and not suitable for any other division or class. Pneumatic wheels are acceptable in this division Open to whips of 60 years and older. Any turnout of single horse or pony may compete in the Novice division under the following conditions (ADS Article 214.2) entries are ineligible for Novice classes after winning at least one first place ribbon in each of three ADS-recognized and/or USEF-licensed Carriage Pleasure driving competitions. Will split into horses & ponies if entries warrant Only open to drivers who have not won a first place ribbon in a ADS recognized and/or USEF licensed Carriage Pleasure Driving competition WPCSA General Information & Rules The judge s decision is final. The judge, rules committee or show grounds manager may intercede in any situation that appears unsafe to exhibitors, animals or bystanders to reduce the possibility of accident or injury. Any acts of discourtesy or disobedience to the judge or officials, or the part of the owner, rider or groom shall disqualify the ponies & the owner shall forfeit his/her entry fee & other fees. All Welsh ponies six years & over, showing in breeding classes & all Welsh, ½ Welsh & Part breds showing in performance classes MUST BE MEASURED or present a valid WPCSA or USEF measurement card. Measuring will be done between 8 & 8:30 AM on show day or by appointment. Wire Wheeled Vehicles Permitted in all driving classes. Junior exhibitors must wear approved protective headgear (ASTM/SEI) at all times whenever mounted or in a driven vehicle at all times while on the show ground. Harness must be secured & properly fitted. Any rider

6 violating this rule at any time must immediately be prohibited from further riding until such headgear is properly in place. Class Specifications ADS CLASS SPECIFICATIONS Turnout (Ring Class) A Pleasure Driving class in which entries are judged primarily on performance and quality of each turnout. To be show both ways of the arena at a walk, slow trot, working trot, and strong trot. To stand quietly and to rein back. To be judged: 70% on the condition, fit and appropriateness of harness and vehicle, spares and appointments, neatness and appropriateness of attire and overall impression. 30% on performance, manners and way of going. Working (Ring Class) A Pleasure Driving Class in which entries are judged primarily on the suitability of the horse to provide a pleasant drive. To be shown both ways of the arena at a walk, slow trot, working trot and strong trot. To stand quietly and to rein back. All entries chosen for a workout may be worked both ways of the arena at any gait requested by the judge and may be asked to execute appropriate tests. To be judged: 70% on performance, manners and way of going of the horse (s). 20% on the condition and fit of harness and vehicle. 10% on neatness of attire. Reinsmanship (Ring Class) A Pleasure Driving class in which entries are judged primarily on the ability and skill of the driver. To be shown both ways of the ring at a walk, slow trot, working trot and strong trot. Drivers shall be required to rein back. All drivers chosen for a workout may be worked at any gait requested by the judge and may be asked to execute appropriate tests. The driver should be seated comfortably on the box so as to be relaxed and effective. Either the one or two handed method of driving is acceptable. Common to both methods, the elbows and arms should be close to the body with an allowing but steady hand enabling a consistent feel with the horse s mouth. Drivers should not be penalized or rewarded for using one general style over another. To be judged: 75% on handling of reins and whip, control, posture, and overall impression of driver. 25% on the condition of harness and vehicle and neatness and attire.

7 Pick Your Route Obstacles o To be driven over a course of obstacles (paired markers) with no set route. The number of obstacles to be proportionate to the dimensions of the driving area. Not to exceed 20 obstacles. o Typically, obstacles in this type of class are not measured for each entry but are set at 80 inches (200 cm) at the start of the competition, and only reset in the event of a knockdown. o After passing through the Start markers, the driver proceeds through each obstacle to the designated Finish markers, choosing his own route. Each obstacle and the start and finish lines may be driven from either direction. Driving an obstacle more than once or through the Start/Finish lines out of sequence will be considered off course. o Course faults are scored as penalty seconds and are added to the driver s elapsed time. Placings are determined on a low total time basis. The winner will be the turnout, which, in the opinion of the judge, presents the most elegant effect. This will include vehicle, harness, appointments, horse(s), driver, passengers, grooms, etc., but above all, general impression is most important. Vehicle and harness may be inspected to ensure thoughtful restoration and careful maintenance. Attention will be paid to the personal appearance of the driver, grooms, and passengers as it contributes to the overall picture. Period costumes are definitely prohibited. Performance will not be judged unless it detracts from the elegance of the turnout. Will be judged by overall impression throughout the competition. Ladies Driving Class Entries are judged primarily on the suitability of the turnout for a lady with emphasis on manners. To be shown both ways of the arena at a walk, slow trot, working trot and strong trot. Must rein back without resistance and must stand quietly at any location in the arena. To be judged: 50% on manners, performance, elegance and suitability of the turnout for a lady. 25% on the skill of the driver. 25% on overall impression.

8 Gentlemen s Driving Class Entries are judged primarily of the turnout for a gentleman with emphasis on manners. To be shown both ways of the arena at a walk, slow trot, working trot and strong trot. May show a degree of boldness but not excessive speed. Must rein back without resistance and must stand quietly at any location in arena. To be judged: 50% on manners, performance, and suitability of the turnout for a gentleman. 25% on the skill of the driver. 25% on overall impression. Drive and Ride Single horse or pony to be shown in two concurrent sections. In Harness: To be shown to a suitable pleasure driving vehicle, both ways of the arena at a walk, slow trot, working trot, and strong trot. To stand quietly and to rein back Under Saddle: To be shown both ways of the arena at a walk, and trot (or jog). To stand quietly and to rein back. To be judged: 50% on performance, manners, way of going and suitability in harness. 50% on performance, manners, and way of going under saddle Pleasure Drive Pace Purpose: To test the driver on his skill in negotiating a cross-country drive at a prescribed pace (similar to a hunter pace) To be driven over a marked course of any length (suggested length 3-6 miles or 5-10 km). The mid-point of the course is marked with a half-way marker. Drivers are given the distance of the course and the speed they are to drive and they must try to come to the finish line exactly on time. Mandatory Trot: The last 0.6 mile (1 km) must be driven at the trot. The start of the trot is marked mandatory trot. One penalty is assessed for each second too early or too late. Five penalties for each break in gait to a canter or gallop as defined in Walk section and mandatory trot sections: Five penalties for each break in gait as defined in for 1st, 2nd and 3rd breaks, 4th break is. Ties: In the event of a tie, the judge determines the winner by selecting the horse most suitable to provide a pleasant drive. To be judged on how close the driver s time comes to the ideal time. Old Guard Class is judged under house rules. Open to all drivers 60 years and over. To be shown both ways of the arena at a walk, slow trot, working trot and strong trot. Must rein back and stand quietly. To be judged: 50% on reinsmanship 50% on performance

16 Every entry at a WPCSA sanctioned show shall constitute an agreement and affirmation that all participants: 1) shall be subject to the rules of the WPCSA, CWC and the local competition; 2) every animal and exhibitor is eligible as entered; 3) agree to be bound by the rules of the WPCSA, CWC and the local competition and accept as final any decision of the WPCSA, CWC or competition on any questions arising under said rules and agree to hold the competition, the WPCSA, CWC their Officials, Directors and Employees harmless for any action taken; 4) agree that they participate voluntarily in the competition fully aware that equine sports and the competition involve inherent dangerous risks and by participating they expressly assume all risks of injury or loss and agree to indemnify and hold the WPCSA, CWC, the competition and their Officials, Directors, Employees and Agents harmless from all claims including injury or loss during or in connection with the competition whether or not such injury or loss resulted, directly or indirectly, from negligent acts or omissions of said Officials, Directors, Employees and Agents of the WPCSA, CWC or the competition. 17 WPCSA Class Specifications For 2019 Show Year Effective December 1, 2018 WPCSA PLEASURE DRIVING (Article 113.1) 12/1/2017 To be shown to a suitable two or four-wheeled vehicle or four-wheeled vehicle for pairs, but not a viceroy, racing sulky or fine harness rig. Use of a bike style vehicle with floorboards and a basket is acceptable. To be shown both ways of the ring at a walk, working trot and trot on and stand quietly and except for tandems, to back readily. A properly attired groom or passenger capable of rendering assistance in case of an emergency is required for all pairs and tandems; unicorns and four-in-hands require 2 grooms/passengers. Failure to comply will result in elimination from the class. To be judged 75% on performance, manners, movement and style; 25% on breed type and conformation. Working classes are judged 100% on performance. WPCSA CARRIAGE DRIVING (Article 113.2) 12/1/2017 Classes open to Ponies/Cobs/Half-Welsh/Part Breds. To be shown both ways of the arena at a walk, slow trot, working trot and strong trot. To stand quietly, both on the rail and while lined up, and to rein back. In the slow trot the animal should maintain forward impulsion while showing submission to the bit. A properly attired groom or passenger capable of rendering assistance in case of an emergency is required for all pairs and tandems; unicorns and four-inhands require 2 grooms/passengers. Failure to comply will result in elimination from the class. WPCSA CARRIAGE DRIVING TURNOUT (Article ) To be judged primarily on the performance and quality of each turnout. To be shown both ways of the ring at a walk, slow trot, working trot and strong trot. To stand quietly and to rein back. To be judged 70% on the condition, fit and appropriateness of harness and vehicle, neatness and appropriateness of attire and overall impression; 30% on performance, manners and way of going. WPCSA CARRIAGE DRIVING WORKING (Article ) To be judged primarily on the suitability of the animal to provide a pleasant drive. To be shown both ways of the ring at a walk, slow trot, working trot and strong trot. To stand quietly both on the rail and while lined up and to rein back. May be asked to execute appropriate tests. To be judged 70% on performance, manners and way of going; 20% on condition and fit of harness and vehicle; 10% on neatness of attire. WPCSA OBSTACLE/CONES DRIVING (Article ) Obstacle/Cones to be judged 100% on performance. Course plan must be announced and posted one hour before competition is to begin. Competitors may walk the course. Martingales and overchecks are prohibited in obstacle classes for all vehicles. Side checks are optional. Failure to comply incurs elimination. Refer to specifications in rulebook (Article ) for the type of obstacle/cones classes being offered. See Article for definition of break in gait.
