EC is committed to: Upholding the welfare of the horses, regardless of value, as a primary consideration in all activities; Requiring that horses be treated with kindness, respect and the compassion that they deserve, and that they never be subjected to mistreatment; Ensuring that owners, trainers and exhibitors or their agents use responsible care in the handling, treatment and transportation of their horses as well as horses placed in their care for any purpose; Providing for the continuous well-being of horses by encouraging routine inspection and consultation with health care professionals and competition officials to achieve the highest possible standards of nutrition, health, comfort and safety as a matter of standard operating procedure; Continuing to support scientific studies on equine health and welfare; Requiring owners, trainers and exhibitors to know and follow their sanctioning organization s rules, and to work within industry regulations in all equestrian competition; Reviewing, revising and developing competition rules and regulations that protect the welfare of the horses. 3 GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS 1. The show is open to all, but the show committee reserves the right to refuse any entry. 2. The Show Committee reserves the right to, add, amend, or delete any point not covered by the rules and to correct any error or make any necessary changes in the Prize List or Program. Any classes may be cancelled or combined at the discretion of the show committee. Entrants shall be notified. 3. Barn calls are a courtesy only. Exhibitors must check in with the Gate Attendant before the class is called into the ring. Those Exhibitors who have not checked in, may be stopped from entering the ring. Exhibitors must enter the ring promptly when called. The gate will close two minutes after the first horse enters the ring or in cases with large classes taking more than 2 minutes, after the entry of the final horse in a string of horses. Those not ready when called, will not be allowed to enter the ring once the gate is closed. 4. Gate holds will be granted at the discretion of Show Management and must be requested through the gate attendant well before the class, preferably before the beginning of the session, requiring the gate hold. Requests can also be made through the show Office one full session before. 5. In the case where a horse shall lose a shoe, or for equipment breakage, seven (7) minutes will be allowed for replacement. 6. Any horse entered in any class at a competition subject to the requirement to pay drug testing fees may, while on the competition grounds and on the recommendation of the chair of the provincial Equine Medication Control Committee or the chair s appointee, be selected for equine medication control testing. 7. Upon any act of discourtesy or disobedience to the Officials by an owner, groom, rider or driver, the owner may forfeit their entry fee and as such will be reported to the Show Committee and/or EC. The Committee reserves the right to itself, the power to remove any groom, horse, rider, family member or persons associated with any horse or rider from the show grounds without being liable for compensation. 8. Protests shall be made in writing within forty-eight (48) hours of the holding of a class, to the show secretary and shall be accompanied by a deposit of $ cash which sum shall be forfeited if the protest is not sustained. 9. Grooms are to appear in the ring neat, clean, and suitably attired. 10. No person other than officials, steward and attendants on duty may enter the ring without permission of the steward or show manager. 11. The abuse or inhumane treatment of a horse by an exhibitor, trainer or other person shall not be tolerated under any circumstances. 12. Hors Concours allowed. These entries must pay the same entry fee and are subject to the same conditions, which apply to regular entries as outlined in the division rules. Hors Concours entries are not eligible for any awards. 13. All entries must be made on the official entry form or a reasonable facsimile, and be properly signed by the owner or authorized agent. Please include copies of registration papers and membership cards with entry form. All junior exhibitor entries must be signed by a parent or legal guardian. 14. Each horse shall be assigned a competition number, which much be visible at all times in the schooling and exercise areas as well as in the competition ring. Any exhibitor using the wrong number, or having no number in the ring may be excused from the class or may be disqualified in the event of a protest. It is the exhibitor s responsibility to ensure they are wearing the correct number. 15. The Judge s decision is final in all classes. No one will approach the Judge with regard to a decision unless he/she first has permission from the Show Committee or Steward who shall arrange an appointment with the Judge at a proper time and place. No person may enter the space set aside for the Judge or hold communication with the Judge without permission. 16. EC Article A905.2 states that Junior competitors must wear proper fitting, approved protective headgear, with the safety harness correctly secured, at all times while mounted on competition or event grounds. Approved headgear meets the ASTM (American Society for testing Materials) standards and displays the SEI (Safety Equipment Institute) seal. The British standard, BSI, is also acceptable. EC Article A905.1 strongly recommends that all persons wear ASTM/SEI or BSI approved headgear at all times while mounted or driving cross country or marathon. At present, if a Junior is competing in a discipline or breed whose rules specify other headgear (e.g. western hats, derbies etc) those rules supersede the new rule. However, all breeds and disciplines do allow protective headgear with no penalty and we urge their members to put safety ahead of tradition and adopt the new rule. Therefore, no helmets are mandatory as yet in Saddle Seat or Western classes but they are recommended. Approved headgear is mandatory in all over fences classes, dressage, hunt seat equitation & leadline.
