The Friesian breed has a 9 point advantage in genetic base for Fertility Index when compared to the Holstein breed. This means an average of 5 days reduced calving interval due to genetics alone (see graph 1). When combined with the benefits of heterosis, the Friesian bred can offer a reduction of 12 days calving interval. This reduction in calving interval is worth approx 50/cow/year!
