This time we will be having the Summer Solstice Show on Sunday, June 2, 2013 at Poco Loco. Classes will include Western Dressage, Dressage Roulette, and Prix Caprilli classes. The Colliding Rivers Chapter will be providing lunch at the show site. Also on site, Bobbie s Horse Blankets will have a sale table and will be selling tack, blankets, etc. If you have something you would like to sell, please bring it! As always, volunteers are needed and appreciated. Help will be needed transporting the dressage arena, as well as with set up and tear down. If you are interested in volunteering, be sure to contact Jill Giri or Marilyn Ulicny. Opening date is April 22 and closing date is May 24. The prize list is attached to the newsletter. Show turnout is not required, but a helmet is! We are hoping to have a good turnout and have been getting the word out to other groups that might be interested in attending. This show is open to non-ods members so every one is welcome! This is going to be an enjoyable show at a lovely facility.

2 Mildred Kanipe It sounds like the future of Mildred Kanipe is still being considered. Good ideas were shared at the meeting, regarding biology and management. Although, the suggestion of bun-bags for horses on the trail is a questionable one The county seems open to horse camping and further meetings are planned. These meetings will be open to the public, but no public comment will be accepted. Norma will share minutes from the Mildred Kanipe meeting at our next club meeting. Tack Cleaning Party Those who attended had a great time! There was lots of fun and lots of food. We watched the World Equestrian Game Freestyles while cleaning tack and talking shop. Thanks Jill for hosting this event! Braiding Clinic And another big thanks to Jill for teaching the Monday Night Ride braiding clinic! It sounds like Jill encountered some good challenges and helped attendants solve problems. This clinic was informative and fun! Summer Campout The club campout is still in the works, possibly for the weekend of July There are concerns about bugs and weather in the Kelsey Valley during this time. The club is also debating whether this will be an ODS sponsored event or a club event. At this time, this event is considered an ODS sponsored event. If you have any questions or feedback, be sure to contact Hope Flint. Monday Night Rides As the time for Monday Night Rides time at the fairgrounds comes to an end for the year, the club feels it might be a good idea to reevaluate the program and come up with some new ideas to maximize the potential of the program. Kim has done an excellent job running/supervising the Rides, but would like to see more assistance from the club. In particular, it would be helpful to have more of the club s more experienced riders stepping into the role of Arena Director. The idea of changing venue was mentioned at the meeting as well as possibly changing the night of the ride. This is a valuable asset and a major component of our educational goals. We need to come up with some ideas to bring interested and ready equestrians out, both to ride and act as arena directors. Be prepared at the next meeting to discuss this topic further. Be sure to bring feedback: suggestions, comments, complaints, ideas, etc. Let s make the most of this great learning opportunity!

FREE TO GOOD HOME 4 year old mare, 16h, black-brown, not registered, has ground training, moves like a dressage horse, has nice leg action call Kelly at This time of year with the days lengthening, horses shedding and grass growing, it must be spring! That means that mares are also well into the transitional phase of their reproductive cycles. The mares heat cycle is called seasonally polyestrus, that means they have regular repeating heat cycles, but only certain seasons of the year. The mares annual rhythm includes a anestrus over winter when they do not cycle at all, transitional periods in the spring and fall when the cycle is starting up and shutting down, respectively and regular cycles about every days through the long days of summer. In the transitional phase, especially in the spring, the mare may build a very large follicle but not ovulate. This can lead to prolonged and frequent periods of showing heat. This is a normal process, and not a problem unless you are trying to breed your mare early in the season for an early foal next year, or your mare is difficult to ride when she is in heat. These long heats with large follicles tend to more painful than normal cycles for mares, and in the spring a higher frequency of ovulation colics are seen. These occur when the mare is in enough pain that she is visibly cramping, up and down frequently, rolling and sweating. The heart rate of these mares tends to be normal to very slightly elevated, and they will often eat if offered food. A veterinarian can diagnose an ovulation colic with a rectal exam, and they often respond to just 1 or 2 doses of banamine. If you suspect your horse is colicing, take their heart rate, look for fresh manure, and call your veterinarian. Happy Riding! Monthly Health Tip by Dr. Jill Giri

4 UVC of ODS minutes April 10, 2013 Call to order/ flag salute7:00pm Approval of minutes from last months meeting as published, Jill Bruns motioned, Hope Flint seconded, all approved. Welcome Brittany Routh, our youth sponsor Treasurers report: General Fund: HPHHP: Int:.08 Total: Reports from Hope: only activity has been MNR. Recent expenses for Summer Solstice Show with some still outstanding. Correspondence: DC High School dressage team sent request for sponsorship of fundraising show coming up in the spring, no date has been set. Happy birthday Norma, she turns 75 tomorrow! OHSET sent thank you picture and letter for sponsorship Old business: A) summer solstice show: Judge, venue, awards, advertising, and concessions (lunch only) are taken care of. Need to organize getting arena to Buffs and set up and take down and some more show day volunteers. Brett Stallings has volunteered to scribe if it does not conflict with her school schedule. Favorite conditioners were the Passier and Effax, and the Effax mildew cleaner had high marks for keeping tack mold free. The braiding and turnout MNR was fun, demonstrated hunter and dressage button braids, and well as when and how to band, and braid hunter tails. Susan Kalina brought her horse down and we had a lot of fun coming up with a solution to her problem of a thin mane with a rub out in the middle. E) MNR: Kim has enjoyed the challenge of coming up with activities with varying rider ability, and last one of the year was 4/8. She would like more experienced members lead lessons, to get the most benefit from the experience for everyone. Kim feels this activity may be going to the wayside due to lack of experienced input, poor turnout, and the riders that are there do not have a lot of interest in riding formal tests. There is strong interest in continuing to learn and build riding skills and learn from others. The cost is $36/night to work arena, plus lights and we do not have exclusive rights to arena. So the location/venue a problem, cost about 50/night when include lights and that is significant expense. This year we lost 107 dollars, but had carryover from previous donation. The arena directors were great, all with very good, and very different ideas. Overall Kim feels the MNR is a valuable asset, but we need to think about a possible change of venue or night for the coming fall. Please bring alternative ideas and concerns to next meeting.

It was motioned by Jill second by Hope, with a clarification that the money will come out of GF and that proceeds from Summer Solstice Show will go into GF, not HPHHP.
