RED ANGUS GROUP BREEDPLAN ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUES (EBVs) The EBV is the best estimate of an animal s genetic merit for that trait. ACCURACY: Accuracy is based on the amount of performance information available on the animal and its close relatives - particularly the number of progeny analysed. The higher the accuracy value the lower the likelihood of change in the animal s EBV as more information is analysed for that animal or its relatives. Even though an EBV with a low accuracy may change in the future, it is still the best estimate of an animal s genetic merit for that trait. Gestation Length EBV :(days) is an estimate of the time from conception to the birth of the calf and is based on AI and hand mating records. Lower (negative) GL EBVs indicate shorter gestation length and therefore easier calving and increased growth after birth. Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of progeny, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers. 200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal s genetic merit for growth to early ages. 400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal s genetic merit for yearling weight. 600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal s genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age. Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is based on the cow weight when the calf is weighed for weaning, adjusted to 5 years of age. This EBV is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of age and is an indicator of growth at later ages and potential feed maintenance requirements of the females in the breeding herd. Steer breeders wishing to grow animals out to a larger weight may also use the Mature Cow Weight EBV. Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal s milking ability. For sires, this EBV indicates the effect of the daughter s milking ability, inherited from the sire, on the 200-day weights of her calves. For dams, it indicates her milking ability. Scrotal Size EBV (cm) This EBV is an estimate of an animal s genetic merit for scrotal size. There is also a small negative correlation with age of puberty in female progeny and therefore selection for increased scrotal size will result in reduced age at calving of female progeny. Carcase Weight EBV (kg) is based on abattoir carcase records and is an indicator of the genetic differences in carcase weight at the standard age of 650 days. Eye Muscle Area EBV (sq cm) This EBV estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area at the 12/13th rib site of a 300 kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate better muscling on animals. Sires with relatively higher EMA EBVs are expected to produce better-muscled and higher percentage yielding progeny at the same carcase weight than will sires with lower EMA EBVs. Rib Fat and Rump Fat EBVs (mm) are calculated from measurements of subcutaneous fat depth at the 12/13- rib site and the P8 rump site and are adjusted to a standard 300 kg carcase. These EBVs are indicators of the genetic differences in fat distribution on a standard 300 kg carcase. Sires with low, or negative, fat EBVs are expected to produce leaner progeny at any particular carcase weight than will sires with higher EBVs. Retail Beef Yield EBV (%) indicates genetic differences between animals for retail yield percentage in a standard 300 kg carcase. Sires with larger EBVs are expected to produce progeny with higher yielding carcases. Intramuscular Fat EBV (%) is an estimate of the genetic difference in the percentage of intramuscular fat at the 12/13th rib site in a 300 kg carcase. Depending on market targets, larger more positive values are generally more favourable. For further information please contact the Red Angus Society or Red Angus BREEDPLAN. 2

Beef Class Structural Assessment System Structural problems in cattle have a substantial effect on both the reproductive and growth performance of a beef herd. It is widely recognised that structural problems in sires have detrimental effects on conception rates, calving patterns and thus profitability. Similarly, females with inadequate structural characteristics are more prone to weaning lighter calves or conceiving later in the breeding season than their more functional counterparts. These structural problems are filtered through the supply chain resulting in reduced income for the producer, feedlot and thus reducing the overall productivity of the Australian Beef Industry. Over the past decade, use of the Beef Class System in the seedstock industry has produced a marked improvement in herds which have shown commitment to using the information appropriately. Through these dedicated breeders, there has been a flow on affect of structural improvement through out all sectors of the beef cattle industry. Jim Green and Liam Cardile of BEEFXCEL service many of the leading seedstock herds in Australia. BEEFXCEL is not involved in any genetic marketing or specific breeding advice and therefore has no conflict of interests to influence their stock appraisal. The integrity of the structural data provided by BEEFXCEL is recognised throughout the industry as Jim and Liam are fully INDEPENDENT assessors. HICKS BEEF STRUCTURAL PROGRAM: Since 2003 Hicks Beef have used the services of BEEFXCEL to assess the structure of all sale bulls. The SPRING 2017, HICKS BEEF Sale Bulls have been independently structurally assessed to maximise the quality of stock on offer. Any animals deemed inadequate have been removed from the sale draft. The Hicks Beef sale bulls were assessed by Liam Cardile of BEEFXCEL on 08/08/2017. The composite bulls scrotal circumference measurement was taken on 08/08/2017. How to Use The Beef Class System The Beef Class System uses a 1-9 scoring system; A score of 5 is ideal (Note: Except for Temperament where a Score of 1 is ideal); A score of 4 or 6 shows slight variation from ideal, but this includes most animals. An animal scoring 4 or 6 would be acceptable in any breeding program; A score of 3 or 7 shows greater variation but would be acceptable in most commercial programs. However, seedstock producers should be vigilant and understand that this score indicates greater variation from ideal; A score of 2 or 8 are low scoring animals and should be looked at closely before purchasing; A score of 1 or 9 should not be catalogued and are considered culls. 6 Multi-Breed Estimated Progeny Difference Figures Since starting our Australian Beef Composite program we have been frustrated by not being able to use figures to describe our cattle to clients, or to use them to increase genetic improvement in our own breeding program. Why has it taken so long? Unfortunately Australian Breedplan figures are owned by their respective breeds, and there is no common base between breeds. Different breeds figures sit quite separately to each other. Fortunately the US Simmental Association has solved all our problems with their true multi breed EPDs. BENEFITS OF EPDS HUGE VOLUME OF DATA 11.5 million head recorded 300,000 + animals recorded annually Plus 11 million American Angus EPDs incorporated into the database Largest multi breed data base in the world TRUE MULTI BREED DATABASE Figures directly compare all participating breeds. The Australian multi breed figures start with a base breed, all new breeds are brought in without any adjustment for their own breed figures. The US Simmental Multi Breed EPDS run American Simmental American Red Angus American & Canadian Gelbvieh American Maine Anjou Canadian Angus Canadian Red Angus Canadian Simmental Incorporates American Angus data It also brings in Australian figures indexed into the US system TOP QUALITY DATA With the large volume of data, there are better links between sires, 35,000 matings Progeny tests of over 5,000 carcases 500 sires progeny tested, tested per annum DNA ENHANCED EPD CAPABILITY In 2012 the American Simmental Association introduced a highly effective 50K DNA test This increases the accuracy of EPDs OUR COMMENTS ON THE US FIGURES The US figures are a god send to our breeding program. We are now part of one of the world s largest data banks in our industry. It enables clients to more exactly match the bull to the program. 4

ANY RESERVATIONS? Initially these figures have been incorporated into the US system, with only a few years of our data bank from over 18 years of collecting data. It was considered too labour intensive to include too much back data. We are happy with how it ranks our sale bulls. Possibly some of our home bred sires without the depth of records are slightly below where we think they should sit (possibly all breeders think this). We are sure that with more years of data input, this will be solved. Currently we are using as many bulls linked to the US figures as we can, to improve links and accuracy. If this year s figures are a good indicator of our bulls performance, the following years will just get better MULTI-BREED PERCENTILE TABLE CE BW WW ADG YW MCE MLK MWW STY DOC CWT YG MRB BF REA SF API TI Avg aahicks@bigpond.com Website:

HICKS BEEF GENETIC TRENDS HICKS BEEF: ALL PURPOSE INDEX HICKS BEEF: TERMINAL INDEX HICKS BEEF: BIRTH WEIGHT HICKS BEEF: CALVING EASE Our new calf catcher in action, making the weighing and tagging of our Spring 2017 calf crop much easier and safer. A lot of work goes into collecting performance data that is accurate and reliable. Thanks to the team at Holbrook Engineering who did a great job building this calf catcher for us. Local engineering at its best. Vet Check Information All bulls presented in the auction have been fertility tested by the Holbrook Veterinary Centre. They have passed an examination of their reproductive tract, which includes a testicular palpation, internal reproductive organ palpation and penis check. General health and structure are part of the course for this veterinary examination. Service ability testing and semen assessment have not been performed and we encourage all purchases to integrate their new bulls into the risk mitigation strategy that they employ back home. High Roughage Diet Producing bulls in optimum condition for their first joining season has got to be our first priority. Yes we want them to look well for photos and sale presentation, but they must be able to go out and work. This year we have tried to keep our bulls on steady weight gain on grass throughout their entire lives, with just a high roughage silage based ration to keep them going through the winter. 10 HYBRID VIGOUR AND SELECTION FOR ECONOMIC TRAITS The Hicks Beef bull sales give beef producers the opportunity to use science to increase their profits with the benefits of a breeding program using both hybrid vigour and genetic selection for performance based on the world s largest multi-breed database. The benefits of measuring economic traits and using the US multi-breed figures has allowed us to put a total economic package together. High growth rates are little use if it comes at the cost of fewer live calves. Calving ease has always got to be in the equation with growth. The good news is that there is now a significant selection of bulls that bend the growth curve. That is, identify bulls that give both moderate birth weights and high yearling weights. Using the world s largest data bank of the US multi -breed figures, we can target the bulls that do both. There is also a need to reduce mature cow weight. In a world where you get paid for beef production per hectare it is important to keep cow efficiency at its maximum. The success of Hicks Beef in carcase competitions has been achieved by a rigorous selection for top ultra sound carcase traits. The balance to be maintained is selection for rib eye area combined with marbling and adequate fat cover. Again, through the use of the world s largest data bank, and scanning over 1000 calves every year, we can measure our annual improvement in these important economic traits. Hybrid vigour is recognised by beef scientists as the only way to rapidly improve female fertility. The estimates of the advantage of using hybrid females is 23% more weaning weight per cow exposed to bulls at joining. We offer both red and black Australian Beef Composites to suit the different requirements of clients. We believe that the red coat colour is better suited to a hot climate. But in a world where black cattle gain a premium, who can argue? LOT 30 ABC L1044 LOT 31 ABC L948 8 LOT 32 ABC L967 LOT 33 ABC L926

We saw the photos of this sire and became interested, and when we saw his outcross pedigree and solid numbers we became very interested. L99 offers a very outcross, totally black pedigree, although both parents are red in colour. Their genetics represent the best of the Angus breed and come from red carriers in the breed. L99 is a very good bull, his Te Mania dam is one of our best. He has moderate birth and heifer calving ease, good growth and very good carcase data. Red bulls can only have red calves to red cows. The bulls are given a supplementary ration for 10 weeks, out in the paddock still in their calving groups. All bulls are treated identically with no preferential treatment for the top bulls. We have sold bulls to many areas of Australia and have had no complaints about their mobility or fertility. ACCOMMODATION: Holbrook has several motels, please call Andrew to make a reservation for you. Terms and Conditions of Sale 1.
