4 . Coats of Arms date to the early Middle Ages. In the early twelah century, helmets and other armor began making it difficult to tell armed warriors apart. The solugon was for each knight or soldier to paint something personal on their shield. These designs were important in bahle, but they also funcgoned like team uniforms when knights met in tournaments. 5 Before you design your own coat of arms, it'll be useful to observe the tradigonal design elements. Design elements represented the people and how others see them.

6 Below is a list of some elements that create the complete coat of arms. The element we are working on today is the shield.

8 A coat of arms design contains things like checkerboards, polka dots, or fur paherns. One tradigonal design rule is that two solidcolor fields shouldn't appear side by side unless one of the two is "metallic".
