While the Castilian army is numerically superior, their units have low morale ratings, many rated D and E and with only leather armor. The Castilian army therefore must rely heavily on their French allies, who have among them two A morale cavalry units with plate armor. The English are a high morale force with plate and mail armored units. Victory points are awarded for eliminated enemy units as well as for routing Castilian units that end the game south of the road. The Castilian army is initially awarded 20 VP; so the English must get more than that to win, and that s if they don t take any losses themselves. BATTLEPLAN
Turn 1 Henry orders the Castilian forces to move forward against the English. His strongest troops are the French Mercenaries commanded by Bertrand du Guesclin. Two large formations of French cavalry advance into the English center. They re supported by Castilian bidets. The Count of Denia advances along Henry s right with several Castilian genitours. (Genitours are light cavalry units that have the advantage of engaging in both the Fire and Melee Phases without having to change modes.) They remain just out of range of the English longbows. Henry s left is held by Don Tello s brave cavalry formation and more genitours. By moving forward, Henry is hoping to allow more space for any of his units that may rout, as they will drown if they enter the Rio Najarilla. The English move second. The Duke of Lancaster, John of Gaunt, and John Chandros both advance in the center with elite plate armored infantry. Longbow formations advance with them, staying just outs of range of the Castilian bidets. Thomas Percy s cavalry and longbows move along the English left while the Captal de Buch s cavalry advances to hold the English right. John of Gaunt and Chandros are successful in the center, and they manage to eliminate a Castilian (L-6- C) bidet unit. Unfortunately, Lancaster s men-at-arms have no luck when they first engage the Castilian Center. Chandros s forces aren t yet in contact. Thus ends the first 20 minutes of the battle
Turn 2 Henry moves to rally a group of routing bidets. (Bidets are light units used as skirmishers.) On the Castilian right, the Count of Denia charges the English. Both the English longbows and Castilian genitours fail to hit anything during the Fire Phase. Denia s charge is successful, and Percy s cavalry begins to rout. In the Center, du Guesclin s cavalry smashes into Chandros s men-at-arms, which have been surrounded by genitours and bidets. The English longbows manage to hit the bidets that have blocked the rear of Chandros s men. On the left, Don Tello s cavalry charges the English longbowmen, but it has no effect. (A charge has a 2 DRM.) Percy s cavalry is in serious trouble on the English left, as it s routing and engaged with the Denia s cavalry. With Castilian genitours behind, there s no retreat path and Percy s cavalry is in danger of being wiped out. Pedro the Cruel charges with his horsemen into the backs of the genitours in order to open a retreat route. The charge is somewhat effective, scoring two morale hits on the genitours. During the Melee Phase, Denia BATTLEPLAN
scores two morale hits on Percy s cavalry and the English horsemen seem to be doomed. The center remains static. Both the Duke of Lancaster and Chandros remain in melee with the French cavalry, but score no hits. Meanwhile, a Castilian bidet unit has infiltrated the English and planted itself behind Chandros s. The Castilian bidet is quickly attacked by English longbow units in melee formation. The result puts the Castilian unit at a morale level of 4. On the English right, the Captal de Buch s longbows are attacked by Don Tello s cavalry to no effect. Turn 3 Due to the disintegration of the genitours behind Percy, he s able to avoid destruction. Nonetheless, Denia continues his attempt to flank the English left. Henry the Bastard s cavalry plows into the Duke of Lancaster s left, making contact with the longbows. Henry moves to rally the fleeing bidets on Du Guesclin s left. On the Castilian left, Don Tello s cavalry takes a morale hit from English longbows and consequently they disobey. The melee is completely ineffective across the battlefield. Percy s longbows are paralyzed by the rout of their plate armored cavalry and are unable to melee. Since Don Tello s cavalry are disobeying, he s unable to raise their morale. Meanwhile, Prince Edward joins Percy s cavalry to their restore morale. During the Fire Phase, Don Tello s cavalry (rout level 2) is hit again by English longbows and disintegrates, leaving Tello standing there alone. The Captal de Buch s cavalry charges, but there s no longer any enemy cavalry on the English right
In the center, the Duke of Lancaster and John Chandros continue to attack the French cavalry. Lancaster s longbows manage a morale hit on du Audrehom s cavalry, while du Guesclin s cavalry puts a morale hit on Chandros s men-at-arms. Thus far the English have earned six VP. Turn 4 The Black Prince finally rallies Percy s cavalry. On the Castilian side, Henry rallies the demoralized bidets. Du Guesclin moves to du Audrehom s cavalry to help them to restore morale. None of the fire or melee combat has any effect during the Castilian turn. Both Henry and Don Tello rally the troops they re with. Then the English open the Fire Phase by devastating a group of genitours who ve helped to encircle Pedro the Cruel s cavalry. That Castilian formation has dropped to rout level three. The Captal de Buch s longbows hit Henry the Bastard s cavalry on the English right and cause them to rout. During the Melee Phase the Captal de Buch s cavalry attacks Henry s cavalry, which continues to rout. Most of the significant action is in the center. The Duke of Lancaster and du Audrehom s armored men stalemate, while Chandros s men-at-arms morale is driven farther down to level 3. On the English left, Denia has Pedro of Castile pinned; he inflicts a morale hit and his men disobey. The Castilian army continues to put up a good fight. BATTLEPLAN

BATTLEPLAN
8 005 Turn 5 Pedro the Cruel finally gets his men under control (removes the Disobey marker). The Castilian army continues to attack. Both the Austurias and Cordoba infantry formations maneuver onto the English left. Don Tello joins Henry the Bastard s cavalry, which is routing on the Castilian left. Henry tries to rally the genitours. The Castilian left is vulnerable; so several genitours and bidets are moved ahead of the routing troops to absorb the enemy s advance. Du Audrehom turns his cavalry to face the Duke of Lancaster s men-at-arms, while the La Mancha infantry marches into the gap in the center. Denia maneuvers his cavalry to attack Pedro s horse on the English left. During the Fire Phase the English score several morale hits. Percy s longbows hit a formation of genitours on Denia s right, and Captal de Buch s longbows strike the French Free Company. During the Melee Phase, Denia attacks Pedro without effect. The French crossbow unit is hit by Lancaster s longbows. Then Du Audrehom s cavalry causes Lancaster s men-at-arms to rout. Captal de Buch s cavalry, on the Castilian left, strikes the genitours leaving them with a two point morale hit. Pedro recovers his cavalry, while Henry and Don Tello restore Castilian morale. The Duke of Lancaster removes the Disobey marker from his routing men-at-arms. Prince Edward joins Chandros s knights to rally them. One of the Castilian genitours has routed into the Najarilla River. Consequently those men drown. The Count of Armagnac s cavalry charges into du Guesclin s French cavalry. The English force is equipped with lances (-4 DRM). None of the Fire Phase combat results in any hits. Armagnac s cavalry plows into the French without effect. Percy s cavalry moves onto the English left, preparing to outflank the Castilian army. Pedro attacks Denia, but things turn for the worse, with Pedro s cavalry failing their morale check and routing. On the English right, Captal de Buch s cavalry attacks a formation of routing genitours. The Castilian unit fails its morale check and increases to rout level to three. The English have accumulated eight VP.
Turn 6 Pedro removes the Disobey marker from his cavalry, but they re still routing. Prince Edward recovers Chandros s men from their rout. On the Castilian left, Henry the Bastard s cavalry charges into the de Buch s cavalry. Castilian genitours cover the right with their slings. Denia sees he s in trouble, does an about face and pulls back into the Castilian center. Meanwhile the Granada infantry pushes into the English left. The Asturias formation follows suit. The Duke of Lancaster orders his longbows to fire at Audrehom s French cavalry, and the French fail their morale check (1 rout). The Granada infantry attacks Percy s longbows to no avail. Then the French crossbow formation melees with Lancaster s longbows with no effect. Both Du Guesclin and the La Mancha infantry attack the Count of Armagnac s cavalry, and they disobey their leader and rout (2 rout). The Duke of Lancaster launches his men-at-arms headlong into the French cavalry, causing Audrehom s formation to fail its morale check (3 rout). During the English turn, Armagnac recovers his forces by removing the Disobey marker. Pedro s cavalry recovers completely while, on the other side, a routed formation of genitours flees the battlefield. Pedro the Cruel is ready to resume the attack, and he launches his cavalry forward in a charge against Denia s cavalry. Percy s cavalry moves on the English far left, deploying his longbow units within fire range of the enemy. Prince Edward s cavalry pursues the Cordoba infantry on Percy s right. The Duke of Lancaster attacks Audrehom s cavalry, which is already at rout level three. On the English left, three of the longbow formations fire at Denia s cavalry and miss entirely. Pedro follows that with a charge into Denia s cavalry that causes them to rout (rout 2). Nearby, Percy s longbows hit the Granada infantry with their fire and cause them to fail their morale check (rout 1). Prince Edward s cavalry attacks the Cordoba infantry to no effect. In the center, a formation of Castilian bidets hit the Count of Armagnac s cavalry with their slings. That causes the English cavalry to disobey, and their rout level increases to four. The Duke of Lancaster s longbows fire and miss their target in the center. Prince Edward s other cavalry formation attacks the La Mancha infantry and causes them to rout. On the English right, Captal de Buch s longbows hit a genitours unit, causing them to rout. The rest of the longbows fire at Henry the Bastard s cavalry, but miss their target. Captal de Buch s cavalry and Henry s cavalry trade blows without effect. The English have 10 VP to the Castilian s zero VP. The English need to lead by 20 VP to attain victory, but a valuable formation (Armagnac s) is close to surrender. BATTLEPLAN
Turn 7 The English cavalry under the Count of Armagnac removes its Disobey marker. The French leader, Du Guesclin, moves to Audrehom s cavalry to assist in rallying them. On the Castilian right, Henry the Bastard s cavalry strikes at the Duke of Lancaster s flank. The Castilian right is in trouble, with most of its formations routing. The English longbows continue to fire at the Castilian right. In the center, Henry the Bastard s cavalry charges into Lancaster s flank to no effect. On the Castilian left, English longbows fire and miss. Henry s cavalry on that side attack the Captal de Buch s cavalry. The Castilian genitours cause the longbows to check morale during melee. Armagnac rallies his cavalry, which have moved to the rear. The Castilian leaders rally three more units. Two genitours units rout off map and into the river. On the English left, Percy moves his cavalry to attack the Granada infantry, while Pedro charges his cavalry into Denia s position. Prince Edward s cavalry advances on the Cordoba infantry, and John Chandros s men attack a formation of French crossbows. Percy s longbows are unsuccessful in the Fire Phase, missing the Granada infantry formation. Percy strikes with his cavalry anyway, and the Castilian infantry fail their morale check (rout 3). Pedro s cavalry charges the Denia s men, but they re ineffective. Prince Edward s cavalry forces Cordoba s infantry to rout. Chandros s men-at-arms attack the French crossbows with no effect. In the center the Duke of Lancaster turns his menat-arms into Henry the Bastard s cavalry, with English longbows poised to fire to Lancaster s left. The longbows miss, and Henry and the Duke of Lancaster stalemate during melee. Prince Edward s cavalry attacks the French Du Guesclin cavalry. The longbows are ineffective again, and the attack comes to naught. On the English right, Armagnac advances but remains out of contact. The Captal de Buch s cavalry tangles with Henry s other cavalry formation with no effect. The English have collected 14 VP.
Turn 8 The Grenada infantry disintegrates while routing. The Castilian Andolusia infantry marches on the right-center and comes within range of the English longbows. The French cavalry under Audrehom drives farther into the Duke of Lancaster s flank. On the Castilian right, genitours exchange fire with Prince Edward s longbows, which causes the English to disobey and rout. The Andolusia infantry enters melee against the longbows without effect. On the Castilian right-center, the Duke of Lancaster fires his longbows at Henry the Bastard s advancing cavalry with no effect. Henry enters melee with Lancaster s men-at-arms, which is ineffective. Audrehom s cavalry smashes into Lancaster s flank with no effect. The leftcenter opens the Fire Phase with exchanges between genitours and longbows. English longbows hit Du Guesclin s cavalry and they rout. Then the genitours hit the longbows, which also rout. Prince Edward s cavalry formation attempts to exploit the situation, entering melee with Du Guesclin s cavalry, but that fails to yield any positive results. On the Castilian left, genitours fire at Armagnac s cavalry without effect. Then hand-to-hand combat causes the Castilian genitours to rout. English longbows fire at the genitours with Henry and they rout. Henry the Bastard s cavalry fights the Captal de Buch s cavalry to a stalemate, while the English longbows absorb an attack by the French crossbows. Denia is with a formation of genitours on the Castilian right and manages to remove their Disobey marker. On the English left, Pedro the Cruel launches a cavalry charge against Denia s cavalry. The Castilian cavalry is already routing, and the charge forces them to flee the battlefield. Percy s longbows fire at the Asturias infantry formation and cause it to rout. In a perfect execution, Percy s cavalry enter melee and force the Castilian Asturias infantry to flee, then it evaporates. Prince Edward s longbows on the left also fire at Denia and the genitours with him, but that fails to inflict any damage. At the English center, John Chandros s men-atarms have cornered a formation of French crossbows. Chandros s longbows manage to hit the French and cause it to rout. Then Chandros s men-at-arms melee and force the French to rout level three. The Duke of Lancaster is tangled in the center with Henry the Bastard s and Audrehom s cavalry. The English longbows all miss, and the melee between Lancaster and the cavalry has no effect. Prince Edward s cavalry in the center attacks Du Guesclin s cavalry, which is still routing. There s no effect. The bidets fire their slings and miss. Prince Edward s cavalry attacks the bidets, but again they fail to inflict any damage. On the English right, Armagnac attacks a routing formation of genitours. The attack raises their rout level to three. English longbows fire at Henry the Bastard s cavalry on the right, but they miss. The Captal de Buch s cavalry engages in combat with the Castilian cavalry, but things turn against the English. The Captal de Buch s cavalry routs. The English currently have 19 VP. BATTLEPLAN
Turn 9 Fatigue sets in this turn, which affects movement. Any unit moving forward or laterally has its movement allowance halved. Only units moving entirely toward the rear have full movement allowance. One of the implications is leaders will have a difficult time getting to routing formations in order to rally them. Additionally, every morale check has a 2 DRM, which will cause units to rout more easily. On the Castilian right, two formations of genitours fire their slings at Prince Edward s longbows and miss. The longbows fire as well and hit the genitours with Denia. They disobey and rout. In the center, John Chandros s longbows fire at the French crossbows, which are already routing (level 3), but with no effect. Despite that, Lancaster s longbows hit the French crossbows, and they re eliminated. A formation of Castilian bidets has moved behind the Duke of Lancaster. They fire with slings against the men-at-arms with no effect. Henry the Bastard s cavalry attacks Lancaster s men as Audrehom s men hit him on his right. There s no effect, but the combatants remain in contact. Longbows also fire at the French cavalry under Du Guesclin with no effect. On the Castilian left, the Captal de Buch s longbows hit Henry the Bastard s cavalry, and they rout (level 2).
BATTLEPLAN
The French crossbows melee with the Captal de Buch s longbows without effect. Denia removes the Disobey marker from the genitours. Don Tello rallies the French cavalry. There s further combat during the English player turn, but due to Fatigue, things are slowing down a lot. On the English left, Prince Edward s cavalry attacks Denia and the genitours. The longbows fire effectively and cause the Castilian genitours rout to advance to level three. Then a second formation of longbows destroys the unit, leaving Denia all alone. In the center, John Chandros battles it out with the Castilian infantry. Longbows inflict a level two rout on the Andolusia infantry, and Chandros s men-at-arms finish them off. The Duke of Lancaster is entangled with Henry s cavalry, which is supported by Audrehom s cavalry. The English longbows miss, and the melee results in a stalemate, leaving all forces in contact as the battle continues. Prince Edward s second cavalry formation attacks the Castilian La Mancha infantry. Longbows manage to rout the infantry (level 3), and Prince Edward s cavalry formation swoops in for the kill. On the right, the Captal de Buch s longbows fire at the Free Company crossbow unit, which is currently routing. Another hit is scored, and the French crossbows increase to level three. Armagnac s cavalry strikes at Henry the Bastard s cavalry as it continues to rout. There s no additional effect. The English have 28 VP, which is enough to win. The Castilian army needs to kill at least one enemy unit to get back into the game. Turn 10 The Count of Armagnac rallies the Captal de Buch s cavalry formation. The Castilian right has crumbled. In the center, Henry the Bastard s cavalry joins Audrehom s in continuing the attack on the Duke of Lancaster, but that has no effect. Lancaster s men-at-arms have a formation of genitours behind them, so he remains in a dangerous position. Edward s longbows hit Du Guesclin s cavalry and they rout. On the Castilian left the Burgos infantry attacks Armagnac s cavalry, but that proves to be a mistake. The Castilian infantry unit flees. During the English player turn, another formation of genitours flees into the Rio Najarilla, where they drown. On the English left, Pedro moves farther toward the Castilian rear, but due to fatigue his advance is slow.
BATTLEPLAN
Likewise, Percy pivots his cavalry, but they re out of range and the left is free of enemy units. One exception is a formation of genitours, who are attacked by Prince Edward s longbows. The Castilian unit flees. On the English center, three longbows fire at Henry the Bastard s cavalry while they re engaged with the Duke of Lancaster. As a result, Henry s cavalry routs. The nearby Castilian genitours miss while firing their slings. The Duke of Lancaster orders his men-at-arms to resume the melee with Henry s demoralized cavalry. That drives their rout level up to three. Meanwhile, the French cavalry under Audrehom strike at Lancaster s flank. The English men-at-arms disobey their leader and rout. (Since this is the second player turn of the last turn, Lancaster s men won t actually have to use rout movement, which is important because there s a unit of genitours in their retreat path.) Prince Edward s cavalry attacks the genitours at Lancaster s back, but that fails to have any effect. There s no action on the English right, as all the enemy has fled. The English end with 35 VP. The Castilians didn t manage to kill any English units, but did rout a number of them; however, that s not enough to earn any VP. The English therefore win a 35-0 victory.
