3 SALE INFORMATION Palgrove Stud: The Palgrove stud is based near Warwick QLD, with the majority of the female herd running on our Ben Lomond and Dalveen properties. Bull depots are located at our Emerald and Drillham properties. For over forty six years, we ve adapted our Charolais genetics through a commitment to research, education, new technologies and a common sense cattleman s eye to suit clients environmental and management conditions. We ve grown the stud to a size where it ranks as the largest Charolais stud in Australia and by all accounts, the second largest in the world. In 2009, we started developing our Ultrablack bull breeding program. We re positive that they offer another profitable option to our clients production and target markets. Our Ultrablack female herd is now around 600 breeders and we are still selectively growing our numbers to ultimately reach 1,000 cows. The Sale Bulls: Our policy has always been to prepare our sale bulls on pasture and oats, so that they remain structurally and reproductively sound. This means that the sale weight of our bulls may be slightly less than bulls at other sales that have been fully prepared on a high grain ration. A bull s career begins rather than ends on sale day - so be cautious about comparing bull weights and fat scans between the various sales. Comparison of bulls in a contemporary group is a far more reliable indicator. It is in your best interests to purchase bulls that have had a moderate long term feed ration rather than one that has been pumped up for sale day. Retained Semen Shares: Semen collection on a limited number of bulls has already been done and there will be no further call on the sale bulls (unless by separate mutual arrangements between us and the purchaser). Our Approach: Even though the scale of the registered herd has increased substantially since we took over the stud in 1990, our breeding objectives haven t waivered. We aim to be the leaders in genetic improvement and customer satisfaction. Palgrove buyers expect the best from our cattle - whether it s a one stud sire or a draft of 100 commercial bulls. Our job is to deliver the cattle and the service that is beyond our clients expectations. New Generation Genetics: Since the early beginnings of the Palgrove stud, we have been using raw data and Breedplan information to measure the genetic improvement in our cattle in terms of the three main beef industry profit drivers. a) Fertility b) Growth and Weight Gain c) Carcass Merit It has been a systematic and carefully designed selection process over time with Palgrove producing the largest and most comprehensive amount of Charolais EBV data in the country. Our commercial clients need genetics that are versatile enough to target live export, feedlot and grass fed markets. Progeny need good growth combined with the right maturity pattern and an ability to adapt to difficult environmental conditions to finish easily off available nutrition. Polled Charolais: We are now producing 90% polled Charolais cattle. We set out to achieve this without compromising the Palgrove growth and carcass traits that have been bred into our herd over many years. First and foremost the profit traits should decide breeding selections. There has been a push to promote cattle that are homozygous polled as superior to other polled cattle. Be careful when making bull selections on this single description and remember that homozygous polled is not a performance trait! Whilst it s tempting to blanket join our females to homozygous polled bulls, we ve taken the long road to polling our herd in order to maintain the integrity of our breeding principles. This means that the Palgrove key profit traits of fertility; weight gain; carcass and temperament are not compromised in our new genetics. We thank you for your patience - the results will be a better polled product for you. Visitors: We welcome visitors to our properties anytime to see how Palgrove s breeding program has advanced. We think you ll find that our cows are picture perfect, productive and up to the task of producing the next generation of world class Palgrove genetics. Photos & Video: Thanks to Ben Simpson, OGA Creative and his willing Palgrove assistants for the beautiful shots of our bulls.

4 SALE INFORMATION Comparing EBVs of Different Breeds In this sale, there are two separate BREEDPLAN figures presented: a) Charolais Group Breedplan b) Angus MBR Breedplan Each breed runs a separate BREEDPLAN evaluation. As the genetic base for each breed is different, only EBVs for animals within a particular breed can be directly compared. Putting this in practical terms, a 600 day weight EBV of +41 on an Angus bull is not equivalent to a 600 day weight EBV of +41 on a Charolais bull. Our Ultrablack bull EBVs are provided to us as registered animals on the Angus Multi Breed Register (MBR). Only pure Angus cattle are recorded on HBR/APR registers. We have not included the $Indices on our Ultrablack bulls as the accuracy percentages at this early stage are very low. These accuracies will improve over the next couple of years as more data becomes available. Perhaps we may even live long enough to see breed societies produce one single Breedplan report for all breeds. When assessing cattle performance it is essential to always compare apples with apples. Therefore, we suggest you use the Angus EBV information provided in this catalogue to assess the Ultrablack bulls as a contemporary group only (ie. compare bull to bull within this sale). Charolais Group Breedplan Averages July 2017 EBV Angus Group Breedplan Averages July 2017 EBV We ve been breeding Angus bulls since 1989 and in 2009 began an Ultrablack breeding program in response to client requests to produce a suitable third breed to use in a Charolais/Brahman breeding program. We went to the USA and were impressed with the Ultrablack genetic combination which delivers bulls with an Angus content around 75-81% and the Brahman content at a 25% maximum. The Ultrablack is utilised extensively in southern USA as well as Mexico and South America. They resemble a tropical Angus and have been PALGROVE ULTRABLACKS described as cattle with the meat quality of Angus in a heat tolerant package. We know that producers need clean sheaths; sleek coats and plenty of carcass shape and we have focused our attention on these when making selections on phenotype. The Palgrove Ultrablack In our breeding program, we ve selected predictable Brangus and Angus breeding sires with high accuracy Breedplan data. As our Ultrablack breeding programme continues to develop, we now have a larger percentage of generationally bred Ultrablacks (UB2 s). Our herd now numbers around 600 breeding females and we intend selectively increasing this number over the next few years. The use of AI, embryo transplant and walking bulls that combine the best of USA and Australian genetics means that we are able to produce consistent quality bulls that are adapted to suit our environment here. Our Ultrablack bulls start at Lot 111 in this catalogue, where you ll find more information and recommendations for using these exciting new generation Angus-based genetics.

5 reference sire: silverstream holster (P) When we first saw Holster (P) as a yearling (and then saw his dam) at Silverstream stud, NZ, we knew we had to have him! 50 LOTS Ultrablack Bulls Using Ultrablack Bulls: The Free Lunch We see the Ultrablack genetics working in northern and southern environments to produce steers that will grow fast and maintain that black hided carcass to meet specific premium brands. The advantages to be gained from hybrid vigour when crossing with Ultrablack bulls will also produce increased fertility and longevity in the female progeny. They are proving to be an excellent option to breed Angus-based replacement females across Australia. Some clients are using the Ultrablack over their Charolais x Bos Indicus replacement females to add a 3rd breed to complete the perfect crossbreeding equation. Commercial producers are reporting that the benefit is that they re not getting the tail in their weaners when they use the UB bulls. The Ultrablack increases the calf weights at weaning so that the whole calf drop can still target higher end Angus premium markets (but with increased daily weight gains). That s a real bonus over a straightbred breeding program. We ve been supplying Charolais bulls to clients for over 47 years so we understand what our clients need for their markets. We ve applied this knowledge to the development of our Ultrablacks. Our experience as cattlemen combined with the objective data now available to us gives us a real advantage. Performance data: As with our Charolais programme, we see the largest amount of genetic gain being achieved by utilising both practical, commonsense selection as well as objective performance data as breeding tools. Our Ultrablack bull EBVs are provided to us as registered animals on the Angus Multi Breed Register (MBR). Only pure Angus cattle are recorded on HBR/APR registers. When assessing cattle performance it is essential to always compare apples with apples. Therefore, we suggest you use the Angus EBV information provided in this catalogue to assess the Ultrablack bulls as a contemporary group only (ie. compare bull to bull within this sale). Note: If required, any of our bulls can be registered on the Brangus Society s Enrolment Register.
