Equestrian Center Contacts EQUESTRIAN PROGRAM COORDINATOR & HUNT SEAT INSTRUCTOR Sara Linde-Patel SADDLE SEAT INSTRUCTOR Kelly Hulse WESTERN INSTRUCTOR Sarah Denninghoff STABLE MANAGER Sharon Marohl Hours of Operation Monday-Friday: 5:00 a.m. 8:00 p.m. Week-ends: 5:00 a.m. - 6:00pm Holidays: CLOSED The Equestrian Center may close early during finals week and scheduled holiday breaks or due to weather conditions. Notifications of early closings will be sent out via Canvas. Emergency Procedures In the event of a fire or event that causes structural damage to a building such as a wind burst or tornado, our designated meeting location is inside the outdoor arena. In the event of an emergency, you should immediately go to the designated meeting location. The staff & faculty s first responsibility is to the students: if you are not in the designated meeting location, the staff cannot help the horses until they confirm you are safe. Be aware that frightened horses will go to a place where they feel safe;; so horses should be tied, turned out or held to prevent them from trying to return to their stalls. If a student is injured, notify the Instructor on site or the Stable Manager immediately. Students need to contact an Instructor or the Stable Manager for an Accident Report and fill it out the same day as the accident occurs. During a Tornado Watch or Warning, students must immediately return to campus. Thunderstorm Watches and Warnings will be handled at the discretion of the Instructor. 2

Student Conduct & Dress Code We frequently have alumnae and potential student employers, prospective students, their families and Admissions visit unannounced. For these reasons and to practice behaving successfully, always keep your language and conduct professional. Appropriate conduct includes avoidance of disparaging remarks, immature comments, complaining, and cussing. We abide by a Horse Welfare work level formula as supported by our veterinarians. This formula states that no horse being ridden will be asked to carry a combined weight (student+tack) that exceeds 20% of the horse s own body weight, and no horse being driven will be asked to pull a combined weight (student+vehicle) exceeding the horse s own body weight. Horses at the Equestrian Center weigh on average between pounds with saddles weighing between pounds. Riders exceeding 200 pounds may be unable to fulfill riding and driving requirements. Whether riding, managing or working with horses in any way, students need be physically fit to meet the demands of an equestrian career. Students who are physically unfit will ride at a recreational or trail riding level and will be unable progress to the competitive level required for class. Students entering the program with a documented physical requirement for a certain size or type of horse will be furnished with reasonable accommodations;; however such horses may not be available every semester or in every seat. A professional appearance is required of all students. Each discipline has specific attire requirements as outlined below. If you are assigned to turnout or bring horses in between your classes on campus, shorts or nonriding pants will be permitted provided you are wearing boots. Absolutely no tennis shoes, loafers, open-toed shows, low neckline, spaghetti strap or tank tops shirts allowed while handling horses. Long hair must be tied back when handling horses to allow you full range of peripheral vision. Western Classes: Boot cut, mid-rise (or higher) jeans long enough to touch heel when mounted Pockets embellished in a manner which may damage saddles are prohibited Belt Pull on style western boot with square toe and roper heel Polo shirt or collared shirt worn tucked in;; sweater or sweat shirt during cold weather Work gloves Clover leaf spurs with straps If required, show attire needs will be addressed by Instructor Hunt Seat Classes Breeches or riding jeans Belt Paddock boots or tall boots Schooling chaps or half chaps Polo shirt or collared shirt worn tucked in;; sweater or sweatshirt during cold weather Gloves Spurs (Prince of Wales style) and straps If required, show attire needs will be addressed by Instructor 3

Saddle Seat Classes Kentucky jodhpurs preferred Polo shirt or t-shirt worn tucked in;; sweater or sweatshirt during cold weather Jodhpur boots or paddock boots Gloves Blunt spurs with straps If required, show attire needs will be addressed by Instructor Equestrian Center Policies The speed limit on the grounds is 5 M.P.H. at all times. Violators are subject to law enforcement penalties and/or other disciplinary actions. Stephens College is a smoke free campus, and this includes the Equestrian Center in its entirety. Smoking anywhere at the Equestrian Center including inside your car, is not allowed. Consumption of alcohol or illegal drugs is not allowed at the Equestrian Center. Students may not consume alcohol or illegal drugs during Equestrian sponsored events on or off campus. Stephens Stables is not responsible for personal items. Cars should be locked and purses and any other valuable items locked in your cars. All personal items shall be covered by your homeowners insurance. Students may park in the north parking lot above the riding arena, or in front of the riding arena as long as you don t park in front of the front door or a pasture gate. If you notice a safety hazard, contact the Stable Manager or a Crew Leader immediately. Student dogs or foster dogs may visit the stables for short periods of time. They must be kept on a leash and never tied up or left in a stall, tack room, or the lounge. Absolutely no horse handling is permitted by students while accompanied by a pet. All dogs must be current on vaccinations administered by a veterinarian. Management reserves the right to see those records. Students are expected to clean up after themselves by putting away equipment, picking up manure piles, and throwing away trash in a timely manner. When cleaning up after a farrier visit, hoof trimmings & nail clinches must be disposed of in the trash, not in the muck tubs. Students must adhere to instructions given by Instructors or Management during class time, events, and open rides. Horse Handling Policies As with all animals, there is an element of unpredictability to be assumed when handling horses. Students should avoid using cell phones and other distractions while working with and around horses at the Equestrian Center. All student riders, drivers, and boarders must wear a properly fitted and fastened ASTM/SEI approved equestrian helmet to mount, ride or drive a horse. 4

The Equestrian Center supports the stance of the American Association of Equine Practitioners that Equids should be cared for in ways that minimize fear, pain, stress and suffering. Abuse of any horse, owned, boarded or leased, will not be tolerated. The Instructors and Stable Manager will be the final authority of what does or does not constitute abuse on a case by case basis. Stephens College reserves the right to prohibit students from riding or handling horses if they do not conduct themselves in a safe and reasonable manner. Horses are never to be handled without proper restraints. They must be wearing a halter or bridle at all times when being handled;; including when the horse is in the stall. Driving any horse is only allowed if the Saddle Seat Instructor is present. Jumping at any height is only allowed if the Hunt Seat Instructor is present. Students may not ride in the field or outdoor arena without Instructor permission. Students are not allowed to change or adjust a horse s bridle without Instructors permission. Students are expected to properly care for their horse and its equipment before and after class as directed by the Instructor. Only tie chains, lead ropes or cross ties should be used to tie up a horse. Horses may not be left unattended while cross tied in aisle or wash rack. Horses must always be lead one at a time. If you need to move more than one, ask someone for assistance or make multiple trips. Lunging must be done respectfully so it doesn t disturb other horses and /or riders. Lunge whips should not be cracked without notifying others in the ring in advance. Horse Shows & Equestrian Events. Showing at Stephens is a privilege, not a guarantee or an entitlement. Any unacceptable or unsportsmanlike behavior will result in the immediate termination of showing privileges. Students who plan to participate in equestrian events off campus must have at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA), be currently enrolled in a riding class at Stephens College, and have their Riding Instructors permission. Each student must make the necessary arrangements with their non-equestrian professors and get their signatures on the necessary permission form. (Available on Canvas) Stephens College students participate in clinics and horse shows throughout the nation. Opportunities to attend horse shows will be available throughout the school year and summer. Cost varies based on the distance travelled from campus, length of horse show, and horse show rating. Average cost for unrated, local shows can range from $50-$300;; while average cost for nationally rated shows can range from $500-$1500. Students writing NSF checks to horse shows or persons connected to showing will lose showing privileges for the rest of the semester. 5

Proficiency Exam The Proficiency Exam for students intending to declare an Equestrian Studies major is held every spring semester. The Proficiency Exam is designed to ensure that students achieve a minimum level of proficiency in all of the required areas for succeeding in upper level coursework in the major and in the industry following graduation. The exam includes a written portion covering the knowledge acquired in Equestrian Studies core level coursework;; a turn out portion demonstrating the practical applications of specialty grooming and turnout for seat-specific competition horses and riders;; and a riding portion demonstrating the horsemanship and presentation skills fundamental to each student s individual discipline. Students who fail to meet yearly proficiency standards will be required to meet with Equestrian department faculty regarding continuation in the Equestrian Studies degree path. 6

I, have been given a copy of the Stephens College Equestrian Student Handbook. I have read it and agree to abide by these policies and guidelines. I understand that failure to comply with the policies & guidelines included in the Stephens College Equestrian Student Handbook will result in disciplinary action and can result in removal of privileges up to and including access to the Equestrian Center being revoked. Signature Date NOTE: This page is to remain part of the students permanent file. 7
