Slide 1 Part Logo Two Slide 2 Forequarters Shoulders Strongly muscled Shoulder Blades Long and well laid back Upper Arms Slightly shorter than shoulder Set at an approximate 90 degree angle The shoulders are strongly muscled. The shoulder blades are long and well-laid back. The upper arm is slightly shorter than the shoulder blade, set at an approx 90 degree angle and is close fitting to the ribs, but still very mobile. If the upper arms are too short, reach in movement will be affected. While the upper arms MAY BE slightly shorter, A judge should NOT seek out to reward short upper arms.
Slide 3 Forearms From the front - slightly curved The pasterns and feet are parallel When viewed from the front, the forearms are slightly curved to give free action against the lower part of the chest. The pasterns and feet are parallel. Here you can see the chest is oval when viewed from the front. Slide 4 Forearms From the side, straight The forearms are straight when viewed from the side. The height from elbow to ground is almost half of the height from withers to ground. The legs are well boned. Slide 5 Pasterns Slightly sloping, elastic The pasterns are slightly sloping and elastic. Dewclaws may be removed.
Slide 6 Feet Feet medium sized, short, oval, pointing straight forward Toes Tightly knit and well knuckled Pads Thick and strong The feet are medium sized, short, oval and point straight forward. The toes are tightly knit and well knuckled. The pads are thick and strong. Trimming of the hair on the pads is acceptable. Slide 7 Hindquarters Angulation To balance the front The rear angulation should balance the front angulation. Slide 8 Hindquarters Legs Well boned Well angulated at stifle and hock The legs are well boned and well angulated at the stifle and hock. Ample, but not excessive bone is correct.
Slide 9 Hindquarters Upper and lower thighs strongly muscled Lower thigh is slightly longer than the distance from hock to ground The upper and lower thighs are strongly muscled. The lower thigh is slightly longer than the distance from hock to ground. The hindquarters should be sturdy and without over angulation. Slide 10 Hindquarters Hocks Perpendicular to the ground Parallel when viewed from the rear The hocks are perpendicular to the ground and parallel when viewed from the rear. Slide 11 Coat Medium length & harsh Topcoat close and tight Undercoat soft and dense The coat is medium length hair, harsh with the topcoat close and tight. The undercoat is soft and dense. The Swedish Vallhund has a tight, weatherproof jacket that does not feel soft to the touch.
Slide 12 Coat Short on head and foreparts of legs Slightly longer on neck, chest and back parts of the hind legs The hair is short on the head and the foreparts of the legs. It is slightly longer on the neck, chest and back parts of the legs. Slide 13 Coat Dogs should be shown in an untrimmed, natural state Trimming of pads is allowed Trimming of the hair on the pads with a weekly brushing is all the grooming this breed requires. Slide 14 Color A sable pattern is seen in colors of gray through red and combinations of these colors in various shades Must be sable All these colors are equally acceptable. The sable pattern is a major characteristic of the breed.
Slide 15 Color Lighter on chest, belly, buttocks, lower legs, feet and hocks Darker hairs on back, neck, and sides of the body Lighter shades of these colors are desirable on the chest, belly, buttocks, lower legs, feet and hocks, with darker hairs on back, neck, and sides of the body. Slide 16 Harness Markings Essential breed characteristic Harness Markings on the sides are an essential breed characteristic. While the light and dark markings across the chest also are typical, they are not essential. Slide 17 Markings A Dark muzzle is acceptable, but a well- defined mask with lighter hair around eyes, on the muzzle and under the throat, giving a distinct contrast to the head color, is highly desirable A desired characteristic of the breed is the lighter shading on the muzzle and around the eyes. The left photo depicts the typical eye and muzzle markings, and the facial mask that is highly desirable, but not essential. This darker masked dog on the right, though not as well defined, stills shows the lighter markings around the eyes and muzzle.
Slide 18 Slide 19 White Markings White on dogs pictured above is acceptable, but close to exceeding 1/3 of total body color. Gait Sound with strong reach and drive White is permitted as a narrow blaze, neck spot, slight necklace and on the legs and chest. The white collar (left) is barely within the upper limit of a slight necklace. Excessive white socks and chest along with white on nose (right). Note: These markings combined would exceed the 1/3 total body color for white markings. The Swedish Vallhund has a smooth gait, resulting from balanced and moderate angulation throughout. His movement should be sound with strong reach and drive. The forelegs should reach forward in a free stride without too much lift. The rear legs should drive well under the body on a line with the forelegs. A level topline should be maintained while moving.
Slide 20 Gait - Front Elbows Move parallel to body, turning neither in nor out Close fitting to ribs, but still very mobile When viewed from the front, the legs do not move in exact parallel planes, but incline slightly inward to compensate for shortness of leg and width of chest. The elbows should move parallel to the body, turning neither in nor out. Slide 21 Gait Feet move parallel to line of motion Fore and rear legs move in parallel planes Incline slightly toward center line The feet should travel parallel to the line of motion with no tendency to swing out, cross over or interfere with each other. While their legs do incline slightly, they do not single track. Slide 22 Excellent Herder and Companion The Swedish Vallhund is watchful, energetic, fearless, alert, intelligent, friendly, adaptable, active, steady and is eager to please; thus making him an excellent herding and companion dog.
Slide 23 Easily trained with consistent, positive reinforcement While easily trained, he requires consistent positive reinforcement and leadership from his owner from an early age. The Swedish Vallhund is neither shy nor vicious. Slide 24 Spirited and athletic Big dog in a smaller body" Swedish Vallhunds are spirited and athletic, with a ready-for-anything attitude. They are a "big dog in a smaller body." Slide 25 Often chatty in nature The breed has a wonderful sense of humor and often is chatty in nature. If they are not amusing you, they are amusing themselves.
Slide 26 Watchful & Vocal These dogs do not hesitate to announce strangers or their joy of living. Slide 27 Very Serious Faults Fluffy coat Color other than gray to red sables More than 1/3 white There are no disqualifications in the standard. However, the following Very Serious Faults are so severely penalized as to effectively eliminate the dog from competition: Creams, fluffies, white in excess of 1/3 of total body color, and any colors other than shades of gray or red sable. Other Very Serious Faults are nonblack noses and any bite other than scissors.
Slide 28 Slide 29 Judging 6 Key points to consider Proportion Balance Outline Movement Form and Function Proportion Balance Outline Movement Form and Function When judging the Swedish Vallhund there are SIX important things to remember: Proportion Height to length of body ratio 2.3 Balance Front and rear angulation is important for correct movement Outline Small, powerful and sturdily built Movement Sound with strong reach and drive. From front, inclines inward slightly Watchful, energetic, fearless, alert, intelligent, friendly, eager to please, active and steady. Neither vicious nor shy. Form and Function A small, sturdy Spitz type used for herding cattle and other farm work. These points are necessary for the Swedish Vallhund to work efficiently and effectively throughout the day on the farm.
Slide 30 This is a table breed You should approach the dog with an underhand. Full dentition as well as the bite is checked in the Swedish Vallhund. Please refer to the handout in your packet titled Showing the Swedish Vallhund. Slide 31 The Versatile Vallhund Performance & Companion Events Swedish Vallhunds have been competitive in AKC companion events such as agility, obedience, rally and tracking. Slide 32 Flyball & Freestyle Although not AKC events, Flyball and Freestyle are popular too.
Slide 33 Herding Events The Swedish Vallhund was approved to compete in AKC Herding Events as of Jan. 1, Our desire to keep the herding instinct alive has been shown by the tests offered at several of our last National specialty shows and by the number of herding titles earned by many of our dogs. Slide 34 The End As noted by the home country Swedish Vallhund club, "If it looks like Grandpa's dog, herds like Grandpa's dog and keeps the vermin off the farm, it's a Vallhund!" Slide 35 Question and Answer Period Thank you for attending. Swedish Vallhund Club of America Revised 5/22/10
