1 By Stephen Kinney and Abbie Trexler The Breed Research department of The Morgan Horse was started as a way of seeing what we can learn from databases available to us as the official organization. One example, Loretta Brown s writing on genetic frequency of certain color characteristics, is an attempt to plumb the depths of the registry database. Last January s Sire Rating a piece of research we will repeat from time to time to see what new sire powers are emerging was based on results from the Grand National and from Regional shows. On every horse in our registry we maintain a show record from recognized, Class A Morgan shows and it means show based statistics are readily available. Other things are more difficult to research. Trying to quantify statistics of Morgans in combined driving events, for instance, is an elusive endeavor. Any effort to do so is complicated by the fact that Morgans often compete using their barn names, rather than their registered names. We continue to ask experts in various fields to help us find meaningful ways to interpret these more elusive data. This particular exercise The Broodmare Yearbook is the result of us asking the question, How can we quantify the records of broodmares and recognize the more productive dams in our breed? Other breeds have broodmare halls of fame. It is very prestigious to have your mare analyzed and recorded on one of these lists. The 2010 Broodmare Yearbook is an effort to start our own hall of fame. The Methodology To begin we made a list of dams of all the World and Reserve World Champions from the 2010 Grand National competition. This gave us a long list of mares who are producing horses competing at the top of our recognized Morgan shows. But one world titled offspring does not a Blue Hen make. So we next went further into their progeny lists to determine which of these mares had a record of routinely having offspring excel at our breed s ultimate testing ground. For the 2010 Broodmare Yearbook mares had to have had winners of previous world or Grand National titles as well. Not surprisingly, given that we are dealing with the top producers, many of them had multiple nationally recognized offspring. In the end, using these criteria, 53 mares qualified for recognition in the 2010 Broodmare Yearbook. The Mares as Individuals It is also not surprising that this is a highly recognizable group of Morgan horses. Many of them have remarkable show records as well as production records. It s hard to say if HVK Obsidian is more renown for her world championships, both in hand and in performance, or for her gifts in the breeding shed that has led to the current World Champion Stallion Dragonsmeade Icon among others (in 2010 an egg from this mare sold for $38,000). HVK Ancient Cry is the most decorated Ladies Park Harness World Champion in history. 44 February 2011

2 In 2010 her offspring proclaimed that she is a producer of world champions as well. Kim s Bellegante is constantly mentioned for her remarkable record in producing Mastroianni and SYP High Definition. She is also one of the greatest park harness champions of all time. Liberation Starbrite is revered. Her show ring greatness knows few equals. In addition to being the dam of world champions, she is the dam of two of the breed s highest ranked stallions, Astronomicallee and Liberation First Star. Long Acres Broadway, three-time World Champion Mare, has now joined the list of our breed s finest producers. Others, like AFF Beulah, Century Enjolie, Cedar Creek With Bells On, Cingate Vincent s Song, Dancity Gracious Remark, Eaton s Starstruck, Erotic Dancer, Futurity Chicago Whitesox, GLB Bell Of The Ball, NBN At Your Command, Treble s Unchained Melody and UVM Unity, are some of the most titled females in the Morgan show ring. Now they are clearly fulfilling their promise to leave a legacy beyond their own records as well. Using Grand National results assures us diversity. We checked the dams in all disciplines and a number of prodigious producers emerged from the reining champions and dressage winners. One of these, More Apples Please (with seven world titles herself) is a consistent winner at Grand National in the reining competitions and now is producing her own winning baby reiners as well. And the Results Are? Based on the success of their progeny in the above named formulation, 53 mares are eligible for inclusion. They are all impressive for doing so with some consistency over their lifetimes. It is what qualified them for this, we hope, prestigious group. A few mares really tended to excel, however. The top producing broodmares from this list, while they have had various owners throughout their careers, all did much of their producing at George Schott s Maine Event Morgans. They are, in number one spot, AFF Beulah, with 12 world or Grand National titled offspring contributing to her eligibility for this honor. In second place is Miss Bluegrass with seven. And tied Carlyle Command Maternal grandsires of multiple yearbook nominees Carlyle Command Cedar CreekHarlequin Sires of Multiple yearbook Nominees Dee-Cee Mr Trophy DBA Street Talk HVK Bell Flaire I Will Command Serenity Masterpiece Lord Appleton Tedwin Topc Treble s Willy Wild Serenity Masterpiece Tug Hill Commando Treble s Willy Wild for third place is Star Lake Ellisa (currently owned by David Helmuth) with six offspring. Also tied in third place, with six qualifying offspring, is Cheri Barber s Double M Temptation. Mares with five qualifying offspring include Ariel, Century Enjolie, JLS Deer Sal, Pompp And Pazazz and Treble s Unchained Melody. Four mares come to the list through the efforts of four of their progeny: HVK Obsidian, Nobelle, SpiceOLife Allura B and Wide Eyed Innocence. Blood Tells Yes, 53 mares emerged, but just as interesting are the patterns that emerged about bloodlines. There are two cases of mothers and daughters in the group. HVK Ancient Cry is there along with her dam, the inestimable Nobelle. Trade Secrets makes the list along with her dam Prelude To Passion, who is unique in one additional way. Prelude To Passion and Pompp And Pazazz (Serenity Masterpiece x CyDon s Cynthia) are the only two full sisters recognized on the list. Notable sires, added to their allure as dominant sires of producers. Leading the list is the late Tedwin Topic, often discussed as a broodmare sire, who The Morgan Horse 45

Two sires had three daughters each on the list: Serenity Masterpiece with Prelude To Passion, Pompp And Pazazz and Wide Eyed Innocence. (Masterpiece s son, DBA Street Talk, also distinguishes the sire line with two daughters Cache and Trade Secrets); and Tug Hill Commando also has three daughters on this short list: Cingate s Vincent Song; Gradell s Work Of Art; and Treble s Unchained Melody. Five sires have two daughters each on the list. They are: As mentioned above, the Serenity Masterpiece son DBA Street Talk has two daughters on the list, namely Cache and Trade Secrets. Proving the pedigree, Street Talk s full sister Wide Eyed Innocence is one of the 53 mares nominated to the Yearbook; Carlyle Command with NBN At Your Command and Star Lake Ellisa; Cedar CreekHarlequin with AFF Beulah and FRF Stolen Moment; Troutbrook Hallmark with Elle and Dancity Gracious Remark; and Treble s Willy Wild with Treble s Margarita and Double M Temptation. Tellingly, some sires show up with frequency as maternal grand sires. They are the sires of the broodmares who produced their own great broodmares: I Will Command is the maternal grandsire of four mares: Cedar Creek Wind Chime; Cedar Creek With Bells On; Indian Creek Clear Vision and LCS Simply Sensational; Serenity Masterpiece is the maternal grandsire of AFF Beulah, Trade Secrets and Cache (he is double grandsire of the latter two mares); Treble s Willy Wild is the maternal grandsire of Treble s Unchained Melody and Gradell s Work Of Art; Lord Appleton is the maternal grandsire of Century Enjolie and Nemours Elegant Flaire; Dee-Cee s Mr Trophy is the maternal grandsire of the two full sisters Pompp And Pazazz and Prelude To Passion; and Carlyle Command is the maternal grandsire of Kim s Bellegante and Futurity Chicago Whitesox. Summing Up The Broodmare Yearbook is a revelation of the workings of contemporary Morgan bloodlines. Using the database of results from the Morgan Grand National patterns were revealed. These patterns, while they include the names of productive dams and significant sires, will instruct astute students of pedigrees on the blending of our bloodlines. The Broodmare Yearbook shows a cross section of the breed as it exists in the present and as it has been stamped by Morgan horses of the past.
