The regulars may fight in attack column, line or square. The new units, however, were not sufficiently drilled to perform complex manoeuvres on the battlefield. Therefore, any D class unit will be Disordered if it moves in line formation. To overcome this, the combined Regiments ( Les Amalgames ) had one battalion (designed the 2 nd battalion) from a regular Regiment and the 1 st /3 rd battalions from the new army. Such Regiments are able to use the famous l Ordre Mixed (as shown for maximum strength 18 figure battalions): Fire discipline was another problem for this army, and therefore should an attack by D class infantry become a Firefight, then at least one of the battalions (the player may

2 choose more) must deploy into Grande Bandes formation. The post-1796 army was, through hard won experience, much improved. There is no longer the distinction between battalions in a Regiment, and all units are able to use line, attack column, l ordre mixed and square. The fire discipline problems are no longer an issue. Although a battle hardered army, it often had to fight after days of forced marches and little food. In such circumstances, make the D class troops Brittle to account for this. They could, and did, use columns when in reserve or to manoeuvre on the battlefield. However, the columns would be arranged such that the units would form a unbroken front when deployed in line. In contacted by the enemy when in platoon column, the troops become are Disordered. These platoon columns were narrow and deep, and are difficult to properly represent on the wargames table. The organization at left is recommended for an 18 figure battalion: The Austrians made use of mixed advanced guard Brigades (comprising infantry, cavalry and artillery) throughout the period. For such units, a Brigade move is only allowed where the whole Brigade moves together without change of formation.

Columnar formations, a higher proportion of light infantry and the Corps system were all introduced. The new Austrian formations of Battalion mass and Division mass may be utilized, here illustrated for a battalion of 18 figures (6 companies of 3): Battalion mass Division mass (2 variants) These formations are treated as attack columns in the rules. The unusual Division mass formation has an advantage in that it has an increased frontage due to the 1 gap between the columns of troops. As this formation was rarely used when the Archduke was not present, players may wish to stick to the more common Battalion mass unless Karl is in personal command. The Battalionmass was such a dense formation that it should count as a Square target for artillery fire. However, it had a flaw running through it, caused by the mistrust that the rank and file felt for many senior officers, who had refused to support the Emperor in the final days of the 1814 campaign. This is hard to represent, and best done on a scenario specific basis. For example, if refighting Waterloo I would make the French line units Brittle once the Prussians have taken parts of Plancenoit.

The British, Hanoverian and Brunswick troops should count as Linear. The infantry would usually fight in line and form square if threatened by cavalry. They could, and did, use platoon columns when in reserve or to manoeuvre on the battlefield. In contacted by the enemy when in platoon column, the troops become are Disordered. However, a platoon column may be used to attack Built up Areas or redoubts, without the troops being classed as Disordered. The British platoon column is very narrow and deep, and a compromise should be used on the wargames table as shown at right: A special formation used by the British at Waterloo was the four-deep line, due to the overwhelming superiority of the French cavalry. This should count as a column versus cavalry, but the infantry will be Disordered if they attempt to move in this formation, and it does not count as an Attack column when forming square. The Dutch-Belgian and Nassau troops use Impulse tactics and can therefore employ Attack Column if they so desire.
