OREGON COWBOY/WESTERN DRESSAGE ALLIANCE AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2013 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 2 (503) or ORCWDA@GMAIL.COM MONTHLY NEWSLETTER Equine Law. She has already been a huge help and we are hoping to have the filing complete in short order. We are already registered with the state, but with the addition of the federal status, any donation or sponsorship money you send us will be deductible at tax time. I ll definitely let you know when that is complete. Summer heat I love it! I hope this finds you all well and happy with the way your summer has gone. I ve sure enjoyed all the atypical dry and warm weather we ve had this summer. Being a CA girl, this is normal summer weather for me. My tomatoes sure like it. I have WAY more of those than I have come to expect in an Oregon summer. It s a good problem to have! And speaking of problems that all of you could help me with: we are coming up on election time in November and I want to get y all thinking about who you would like to help lead your group for the next year. I ll put a little more detail in the newsletter below as far as duties and such. We re a fun bunch to work with so don t be shy! We re also working to finish our 501(c)(3) filing in order to become a federally certified non-profit entity. We are working with Kathryn Hall of Pacific Northwest We have more riding events for you this fall, including our upcoming Cowboy Dressage clinic on September 21 st in Junction City, and a new Western Dressage clinic with Chris Simpson that has just been scheduled for October 12 th. We also have listed all of the schooling shows, clinics and other competitions I have heard about so you have as many places to play as we can offer you. You can find those on our Facebook page or our website event pages. We also had the privilege of welcoming our first Sponsored Youth rider, Ms. Brianna Weivoda. We are excited to have her join us in learning Cowboy and Western Dressage. See below for more on her. And so, bask in the sun while it lasts! We ll be into the cool and crisp fall weather sooner than I m ready for, but each season should be enjoyed while it lasts. Anybody need any tomatoes? Julie Malick President PAGE 1
"Cause your horse to have fun." --Monty Roberts Robin Vachter and her Appy, Little Big Man View from RMR arena Kirk Morse WD Clinic Recap We had a great time at our WD clinic in Yamhill at Running Mountain Ranch in August. The weather was gorgeous and despite a slight arena dust problem due to low water pressure (my fault as I didn t want it to rain this summer LOL!), we still had fun. Our riders ranged all the way from new to the discipline all the way through those who were there to work on their polish so it was a fun and educational day. Pictures are posted on both our Facebook page and website, so please do check them out. Thanks to our riders and auditors for coming. As always, you make our day! ORCWDA Sponsored Youth Rider Program ORCWDA is very excited to launch our Sponsored Youth Rider Program. Our inaugural sponsored rider is Miss Brianna Weivoda. Brianna is 14 years old and lives in Aloha, OR. She s a freshman in high school and likes both western and trail riding. She s also a volunteer at Forward Stride, a therapeutic equestrian center in Beaverton ( where she helps care for the horses, does lead in work with the children, and helps in the delivery of the Hippotherapy program. Brianna has also done some showing this summer at the Clackamas County Horse Show, where she was in the western equitation, trail and gaming classes. She brought home ribbons in all of her classes way to go, Brianna! And I have to send another big thank you to Kirk for his continued generosity and enthusiasm in volunteering his expertise for our clinics. If you have any questions for Kirk, you may reach him at kirkmorse@comcast.net or (503) And thank you to Tish Pollack for the use of her spectacular facility! We look forward to hosting more events there in the future. PAGE 2 Pati Nelson of Forward Stride with Brianna Weivoda
She is interested in learning about Western and Cowboy Dressage because it looks fun and because she wants to improve her riding seat. Her sponsored membership allows her to participate in any of ORCWDA s clinics or events for a year at no charge. We are looking forward to seeing this outstanding youngster s progress throughout the year, and will keep you posted on how she does. come with a hat write up so you will know what to do. We do need someone with bookkeeping or accounting experience for the Treasurer s position; all others do not require prior experience. We are a fun and lighthearted bunch to work with and we very much welcome your help in taking our group to the next level in the following year. Please Julie at orcwda@gmail.com or call (503) to put your chosen candidate on the ballot. You can nominate yourself. The meeting will be more socializing than business so come prepared to have a good time! Address and details will be posted soon on our Events pages. WDAA Becomes the USEF Recognized Affiliate for Western Dressage You mean, you want US to volunteer?? ORCWDA 2013 Annual Meeting and Elections Our annual meeting has been set for November 9, 2013 and will again be held at President Julie Malick s house in Lafayette. Everyone is welcome but only members will be eligible to vote in our elections. We have several board member spots that will be open come election time, including Secretary and Treasurer. We are also getting busy enough that it is becoming critical that we get someone to hold the Membership Director and Events Director posts, so if you know of anyone (yourself included) that would enjoy some volunteer work a few hours a month, please let me know. Most of these posts take between 2 and 10 hours a month so they are very doable even for those with regular jobs and barn chores. Every post that requires more than attending board meetings will July 23, 2013, from WDAA: At the Mid- Year meeting of the United States Equestrian Federation, the Board of Directors passed a rule change proposal effective 12/1/2013 which recognizes Western Dressage as an individual discipline which will have its own chapter in the USEF Rule Book for the 2014 competition season. The Western Dressage Association of America is honored to be the USEF Recognized Affiliate for the exciting new discipline of Western Dressage. WDAA is excited to bring its focus and mission of Honoring the Horse to the USEF s horse welfare initiative. WDAA will work closely with USEF coordinating rule processes and other affiliate functions. Follow the link above for more details. Training in a relaxed fashion and with an effective process entails working with the horse, not against him. Craig Cameron PAGE 3
Dressage. Thanks to Eitan and Company for making more opportunities for our youth to get involved! ORCWDA Board of Directors 2013 Cowboy Dressage Announces New Youth Programs From Tomasini Training Center s August 2013 newsletter: We are very excited to announce the addition of Cowboy Dressage Youth Ground Work Tests and Cowboy Dressage Youth Ride Tests! Groundwork is the foundation and start for all horses and riders. Ground maneuvers, as in riding maneuvers, are based on straight lines and circles thus helping create a lasting partnership. Youth Ground Work Tests are designed to promote this partnership. As in all our tests, SOFT FEEL is our mission. It gives us harmony, balance, precision, relaxation, which should be the end result of our endeavors. Cowboy Dressage World is looking forward to our youth program as it grows and expands in the coming months and years. As end out our summer, we have to bid so long to another of our board members, Tess Gebauer. She s getting busy with other aspects of her life and finds she can no longer serve as a board member. We wish her well the door is always open, Tess! Here is your current list of ORCWDA board members for 2013: Julie Malick, President orcwda@gmail.com (503) Denise Blacklaw, Vice President denise@wwindsfarm.com Pati Price Nelson, Secretary patricia.nelson@forwardstride.org Kirk Morse, General Board Member kirkmorse@comcast.net Youth Ground Work Tests prepare young riders for the Youth Riding Tests. This is based on the use and understanding of the straight line and circle maneuvers. The Ride is the second step into the partnership. SOFT FEEL will now include the use of riding aids. The Ride in these tests will help create a better understanding of true horsemanship. Harmony, balance, precision and relaxation will and should be a learning experience forever. ORCWDA is looking forward to seeing a lot more kids getting out and riding Cowboy PAGE 4
Economy Cowboy Dressage Court Now Available From the Cowboy Dressage August 2013 newsletter: In an effort to keep up with the economic times, our court designer and manufacturer, Jumps West now offers the Cowboy Dressage Brand Letters for a full Cowboy Dressage Court. These letters/brands come in a stencil and will fit a 5 gallon white painter s bucket that can be found at most hardware stores (Home Depot). You just place the bucket upside down and place the stencil on it and paint. If you want to use the buckets as a planter for the corners or entry you can place them right side up. These are easy to stack and transport. Find out more at jumpswest@gmail.com. judging criteria. The Judge s book differs from the Rider s books because the diagrams are reversed. The riders enter the arena at A so we draw the diagrams from the A perspective for riders. Judges sit at C so we reverse the diagrams and draw them from the Judge s point of view at C. That is the ONLY difference between the Rider s and Judge s books. Thank you for the clarification, Bruce, and for the set of books you sent me. They really are a nice product and worth the price! Find them at Get Out and Compete! I just had to share this viewpoint on showing and competing from Rebecca Wirth, one of ORCWDA s most accomplished Cowboy and Western Dressage riders: "I rode in [Para Hevea s] first show (Ella and I got High Point doing Second Level Test 1 & 4). Small but fun [show]. Think I have more friends and clients coming for the next. You should try to encourage your members to get out of the clinics and go to these small schooling shows (to ride or watch). They might find out what they need to be learning at a clinic or a mock show." Elizabeth Kalik and her Drum horse, Smokey Correction on Dressage Illustrated Booklet Article In our June/July 2013 newsletter, I had an article about the new Western Dressage booklets available through Dressage Illustrated. I had stated: There is also a Judge s book available, which describes in detail what to look for when judging each of the WD tests. Bruce Hamilton of Dressage Illustrated wrote me a very nice letter to let me know that All the books (riders and judges) have the same information about PAGE 5 Rebecca and her Paint mare, Ella And excerpts from a recent post from Jeff Sanders of Modern Vaquero Horsemanship on his Facebook page: Recently I competed
in Rancho Murieta, California at one of the biggest open horse shows in the western The Parting Shot United States. Those who know me well know that I am not big on competing anymore and have not been for quite a few years So, why did I show again after all these years? I looked at it as nothing more than a great training opportunity for my horse I think as long as we keep the right mind set and look at competition as an opportunity to better ourselves and our horses, then it can be ok Bring the kids along to our next event! Jeff Sanders of Modern Vaquero Horsemanship So, if you want a way to take your horsemanship to the next level, get out and compete! The feedback you get from the judges and your scores might just be what you need to motivate you even more to kick it up another notch! And remember, it s all about good horsemanship and partnership with your horse. Winning is just the byproduct. PO Box 1335 McMinnville, OR (503) orcwda@gmail.com To sign up for a membership or our newsletters, please go to We constantly have listing for schooling shows and other competitions on our Facebook and web pages, so find one that works and go have fun with it!
