Encourage the participation of registered KWPN horses in the various equestrian disciplines and structure appropriate awards programs that will acknowledge and promote excellence on the part of KWPN horses, breeders, owners, riders and trainers. Maintain a database that records: detailed breed registration information, inspection and performance results, including ownership transfers and sales for all registered KWPN horses in North America. Disseminate educational and informational data to breeders, owners and other interested individuals pertaining to the breeding, raising and approval of KWPN horses, including scheduling and conducting various inspections throughout North America of stallions, foals, mares and geldings. Promote the public awareness of the KWPN horse through targeted advertising. Cooperate with other associations, breed registries and/or government agencies on matters and issues pertaining to the horse industry in North America, including health and safety standards and other guidelines and regulations that may impact the activities of breeders, owners, riders and trainers of horses Keuring Program - Page 2

4 INTRODUCTION Specialized Breeding Directions For decades KWPN horses have been split into three distinct breeding directions: the Riding type (RP), the Gelders type (GP) and the Harness type (TP). In the breeding program of Riding horses, the KWPN decided to further split this breeding direction in two types: Dressage (DP) and Jumper (SP). In North America there is a third type: Hunter (HP). A breeding goal has been formulated for each breeding direction. As of January , Riding type foals in North America are registered as a Dressage, Jumper or Hunter type. The breeder indicates the preferred type on the birth declaration based on pedigree or personal preference. If needed, the KWPN- NA office advises on a breeding direction based on the pedigree. As an adult, the breeding direction of a horse may be changed upon request of the owner or the advice of the KWPN keuring jury, if the horse would clearly fit better in another breeding direction. This is possible during the studbook inspection or after completion of an IBOP or presentation of a sport record. Breeding Goals The general KWPN Breeding Goal is to produce a performance horse that: can perform at Grand Prix level; has a constitution that enables long usefulness; has a character that supports the will to perform as well as being agreeable and good natured towards people; has functional conformation and a correct movement mechanism that will enable good performance; has an attractive exterior that is related to refinement, nobility and quality. Dressage Breeding Goal The breeding goal is to produce a dressage horse that can perform at Grand Prix level and also possesses a healthy constitution, functional conformation, correct movement mechanism, a correct base, and a preferably attractive exterior. To reach this goal, the dressage horse should be long lined and have a correct model with balanced proportions. The horse should move correctly, be light footed, be balanced and supple with carrying power, impulsion, and good self-carriage. The dressage horse should be easy to handle, easy to ride and intelligent, with a willing and hard-working character. Jumper Breeding Goal The breeding goal is to produce a jumper that can perform at Grand Prix level and also possesses a healthy constitution, functional conformation, correct movement mechanism, a correct base and, a preferably attractive exterior. To reach this goal the jumper should be long lined and have a correct model with balanced proportions. The horse should move correctly, be balanced and supple with self carriage and impulsion. The horse should be easy to handle, easy to ride, intelligent, with a willing and hard-working character. The jumper has courage, jumps with quick reflexes, is careful, has good technique and has a great deal of scope. Hunter Breeding Goal The breeding goal aims for a hunter that can perform at the highest levels of Hunter competition and also possesses a healthy constitution, functional conformation, correct movement mechanism, a correct base and a preferably attractive exterior. To reach this goal the hunter should be long lined, have a correct model with balanced proportions and charm. The horse should move correctly, be balanced and supple with self carriage and impulsion. He should be easy to handle, easy to ride and intelligent with a willing and hard-working character. The hunter has a long, flowing stride that smoothly covers the ground in a steady rhythm and with little knee or hock action. He jumps with a beautiful rounded bascule and has a calm/brave character. Gelders Breeding Goal The breeding goal is to produce a Gelders horse that can be used for multi-purposes. The Gelders horse distinguishes itself both in harness and under saddle with its happy appearance, reliable and willing character, healthy constitution, functional conformation, correct movement mechanism and correct base with a preferably attractive exterior. To reach this goal, the Gelders horse should be suitable for use under saddle and in harness with an elegant build with substance, self carriage, sufficiently developed legs and big gaits with light knee action in the foreleg and with power and carrying ability from behind. Harness Breeding Goal The breeding goal is to produce a harness horse that can perform in the highest levels of Harness sport and also possesses a healthy constitution, functional conformation, a correct movement mechanism and a correct base with a preferably attractive exterior. To reach this goal the harness horse should have good suspension in the trot with a foreleg that moves out well with high knee action and a hindleg that steps under powerfully, as well as proud self carriage with a long vertical neck. Switching Breeding Directions Classes are separated by breeding direction. Riding horses are inspected as Dressage, Jumper or Hunter types. Gelders horses are inspected as Gelders and Harness horses are inspected as Harness types Keuring Program - Page 4

5 Horses might be able to switch to another breeding direction after a a passing studbook inspection or an IBOP in the desired breeding direction. If, the jury feels that a horse would score better in another breeding direction, they will consult with the owner about switching. Horses that have already gone through a studbook inspection in a particular breeding direction and received a conformation score of 70 points or more, but did not get star are able to earn the predicate by passing an IBOP in the same breeding direction. Switching within Riding Horses that have already gone through a studbook inspection in one breeding direction can come back another year to be represented in another breeding direction. A horses may also switch breeding direction IF the horse has proven itself under saddle either by passing an IBOP or EPTM (NL only) OR by earning a sport predicate in the desired breeding direction. This could potentially gain them a star in the new breeding direction. Harness and Gelders horses cannot switch to any of the Riding directions. Transfer to Gelders It is possible that a horse registered as a Riding or Harness horse fits in the Gelders breeding direction in regards to pedigree, conformation and movement. If this is the case, a transfer to the Gelders breeding direction might be possible. Transfer to Harness It is also possible that a horse that is registered as a Gelders type fits into the Harness breeding direction in regards to pedigree, conformation and movement. If this is the case, a transfer to the Harness breeding direction might be possible. Inspections Young horse inspection There are classes for foals, yearlings and two-year olds. Young horses are evaluated on conformation and movement according to type. The evaluations is meant to help owners evaluate the success of a particular mating and perhaps get advice as to future breedings. Two-year colts have their own class where they are evaluated as possible KWPN stallion prospects and will receive an evaluation as such. KWPN horses are not branded as foals. Linear scoring To be linear scored a horse must be: a minimum of three years of age a minimum of 158cm (15.2h) registered as described earlier A linear scoresheet will be filled out for each horse being evaluated for studbook acceptance. This consists of an upper and a lower beam. The lower beam contains conformation and movement characteristics that vary by type. By filling in the circles the jury indicates whether a trait is average, more or less than average, or clearly present or absent. The upper beam gives a subjective evaluation for conformation and movement on a scale of 40 to 100 points. Scoring is in increments of five. Mares and Geldings Adult horses are evaluated on conformation as well as dressage, jumping or driving talents. The minimum height for studbook acceptance is 158cm, and horses must score a minimum of 50 for conformation and a minimum of 50 for movement or jumping. The minimum height for star is 160cm and Riding horses must score a minimum of 70 points for conformation with a minimum of 75 for movement or jumping. Harness horses must score a minimum of 68 points for conformation and a minimum of 140 points overall. Mares of a highter quality can earn the star predicate. Mares with conformation better than star can become eligible for the keur predicate. Add to that a passing IBOP or the equivalent in sport, and they can become keur. Stallions The selection of stallions is not only based on their scores for conformation, movement and their talent for jumping, dressage or harness work. They must also be willing, have a good character, passing semen quality, and good health and durability. Performance classes Sport potential is tested in the dressage, jumping or driving IBOP as well as the DG Bar Cup (dressage) and Iron Spring Farm Cup (jumping) for young horses. Premiums Premium ribbons (first or second) are awarded to all horses inspected. First premium or star, is designated with an orange ribbon and second premium with a red ribbon. Best of class ribbons are also given out. Commentary After each class the jury comments on the horses, making this an excellent opportunity to learn what the KWPN is looking for. Starting 2008 Auxiliary Foalbook, Certificate of Pedigree and mares registered with a studbook that is not KWPN erkend, can no longer be inspected unless they are eligible for the KWPN stubook due to a change in status of one of the parents Keuring Program - Page 5

6 JURY MEMBERS from the KWPN in The Netherlands has been the head of the North American KWPN Keuring jury since Mr. Verkerk is one of the professional inspectors employed full time by the KWPN. He was appointed as such after training under the supervision of Mr. Gert van der Veen for a number of years. Mr. Verkerk has been interested in breeding and has studied bloodlines since he was young. He studied economics but horses remain his priority. In 1995 he first started working at the office of the KWPN as an editor of the magazine In de Strengen. For the past seven years he has combined this with the work of being the inspector for several provinces. He was appointed a full-time inspector in January of 1999, and has responsibilities for studbook inspedions, central keuringen, mare performance tests as well as supporting the stallion selections. Another of his duties is selecting young stallions for the KWPN Select Sale and several KWPN sponsored foal auctions. While not a rider, he loves to train horses and usually has one or two broodmares. has been a KWPN jury member since In 2005 he became the inspector in training for the province of Friesland. Early in 2007 he became the regional inspector for Friesland, taking the place of Hennie Boersma. Bart has been the KWPN inspector (mares and stallions) for Scotland since In 2007 he joined the jury in North America. Bart earned a Bachelor s degree in Agriculture from Wageningen Univeristy in He is on the management team at Wadro, a company that makes rebar for the contruction industry. Bart and girlfriend, Patryck Adema, have been running Stal Henstra a breeding and training facility with about 60 horses, since They breed both jumping and dressage horses and usually have about foals per year. Their breeding have competed both in Holland and in other countries. Their best known mare lines are the wellknown Sina line and the line of the approved stallion Rolex. They were the breeders of Zanzibar (Special D x Pretendent), who placed 3rd at the 2007 Stallion Show championship keuring. Bart is an active competitor at ZZ level Keuring Program - Page 6

She was the first foreigner to own both a Province Champion Gelders Mare in Holland, and to breed a stallion that was selected for the 100-Day Test in Holland. In the US, Faith has owned the approved stallion Bolivar, has bred several KWPN Top Ten horses and Breed Show winners as well as a Sport Award winner (eventing). For about nine years Faith spent several months a year studying pedigrees, visiting, researching, and videoing mares, foals, stallions and the keuring process in Holland. She was one of the founding members of the NA/WPN and held a Board of Directors position for the first decade. Faith has completed numerous USDF Sport Horse Breeding Seminars, multiple USDF L-program sessions as an auditor, Equinology's Equine Biomechanics & Gait Abnormalities course, USEF Hunter Breeding Seminars and Learner Judged in Hunter Breeding classes, and is currently in the USEF Dressage Sport Horse Judges program. She is currently riding her homebred sport mare as a schoolmaster. Faith was appointed to the KWPN keuring jury training program in 2002, and became a full KWPN-NA jury member in Dr. Dr. Harrison, from San Juan Bautista, CA, is a graduate of Colorado State Veterinary School and an equine veterinarian with special interest in reproduction and an FEI veterinarian. Dr. Harrison is a former competitor in dressage, hunter/jumper and combined training. She has been an active participant in sporthorse breeding classes and inspections. She has been a breeder of Dutch Warmbloods since Dr. Harrison is an USEF Dressage and Sporthorse Breeding Class Judge and a licensed breeding class judge in Holland. She was a member of the KWPN Keuring jury in North America from 1992 through 1994 and then again from 1999 to the present. She is also an American Vaulting Association "R" judge and an FEI "C" judge. Dr. Harrison was a member of the NA/WPN Board of Directors for 20 years, a term which ended in December of Dr. Harrison is also the KWPN-NA Consulting Veterinarian. Lana Snedden, from LaGrange, IN, has been involved with horses from an early age. Her parents ran a quarter horse racing farm that later changed to Standardbred racing. She has participated in training of Thoroughbreds and Quarter horses and has shown hunters, eventing and dressage horses. Buying, selling, raising and training of horses has been a large part of her adult life. Lana began breeding Dutch Warmbloods in 1987, using top stallions as well as regularly upgraded mares. She has produced a number of first premiums, many of which have ranked in the Top Ten. In 2004 one of her breeding products was the winner of the DG Bar Cup for 3 and 4 year olds. In 2004 Lana also bred, trained and rode her own mares in the IBOP test to become keur. Lana also trains dressage horses under saddle. Presently she is bringing along young dressage horses from her own breeding program to compete in the FEI young horse classes. In 2005 she competed in the FEI Young Horse Championships for fiveyear olds with her mare Tamora (s. Ferro). Lana has served on the Advisory Board, hosted the 2001 and 2004 Indiana keurings and was appointed to the KWPN keuring training program in Keuring Program - Page 7

8 JURY CODE OF CONDUCT For KWPN and Inspectors in Relation to Business Activities Those concerned All those that follow will be subject to the code of conduct and will be called KWPN functionaries hereafter. These are: Jury members - conformation and sport, free lance inspectors, members of the predicate and stallion keuring committee and their substitutes, members of the performance jury, KWPN employees and functionaries with comparative responsibilities. Sometimes the code of conduct explicitly mentions 'KWPN employees'. These cases pertain to professional inspectors and other KWPN employees. In these cases other KWPN functionaries will be excluded. In case of doubt the general administration of the KWPN will decide if and to what degree a person is subject to this code of conduct. Degree of involvement There are large differences between the KWPN functionaries when looking at the degree of and the intensity with which they are a part of the keuring and selection process (i.e. are responsible for activities that stem from the KWPN office). From this it follows that there may be a difference between KWPN functionaries in regards to involvement in business activities, i.e. horse business. Objectivity The KWPN keuring and selection system is based on objectivity of the evaluations. KWPN functionaries must - either individually or in teams - have the ability to judge impartially. KWPN functionaries must not have or develop a dependency type relationship with horse owners, stallion owners, breeders or other interested parties. Misuse The misuse of the KWPN function is forbidden under any circumstance Keuring Program - Page 8 Horse business Involvement in commercial horse business is not an obstacle to practicing KWPN functions. Employees of the KWPN may not be involved in structural horse business as a regular source of income. Employees of the KWPN may not be the owner of an approved stallion. After the stallion of a KWPN employee has been inscribed in the studbook he must be sold. Inspectors that are directly involved in the performance test may not own a stallion that participates in the performance test. Fore-knowledge The relationship between the KWPN functionaries and his/her business partner should be the same as a relationship between arbitrary business partners. KWPN functionaries should separate themselves from trade in horses of which they have knowledge that they have developed through their KWPN function and that is not known to non-kwpn functionaries. Business and keuring KWPN functionaries should not enter into business relationships concerning horses that may be subject to a keuring procedure at which they may take part as an evaluator. This rule is in effect for the duration of the keuring procedure. Breeding products KWPN functionaries are not allowed to take part in an evaluation of their own breeding product. Making public KWPN functionaries are always obligated to make public a business connection to a horse. In the case of a partial ownership it will be expressed in the listing of the horse's ownership. Another example - in connection to a contractual fee upon a stallion's approval, this business concern must be known by all that are connected to the keuring procedure. In this type of situation the jury member may not take part in the evaluation of the horse. Self responsibility Not all the gray areas that exist can be touched upon by this code of conduct. Besides a formal ruling of explicit situations, this code is also a call to all those concerned to act in the spirit of this document and to take responsibility in the case one doesn't feel he is entirely free to act impartially in the evaluation of a horse. Being self responsible mandates functionaries to be open about their connection to a horse being evaluated. Members of the jury do this by talking about the connection with other jury members, employees do this by disclosing their connection to the director and - in so far as these employees act as jury members - to the other jury members. Heads of the inspection teams will act in agreement with the general administration. Responsibility KWPN functionaries have the responsibility to report misuse, such as abusing the KWPN function or a lack of objectivity and correctness in the evaluation of horses, to the general administration. The Board of Directors will attempt to carry out this Code of Conduct and will be charged with the relief of duties or firing of functionaries. The code of conduct gives guidelines for the business connections of KWPN officials to the KWPN keuring and selection process. The execution of the KWPN breeding goal at mare and stallion selections means that many horses change status each year. Even if the financial results of these breeding decisions are difficult to measure sometimes, it is evident that the evaluation process is important. The KWPN General Administration has chosen not to put many detailed situations in the rules.because is impossible to name all the situations that may occur.

Thoroughbred Erkenning Saddlebred/Hackney KWPN-NA Education and Judging Seminars Every year, people contact the KWPN- NA office with questions regarding the keuring/judging process. Questions range from "What is the jury looking for?", "What is linear scoring?", "How does it work?", "How is it different from other studbooks?" The KWPN-NA has formalized the answers to these questions, and much more, in the KWPN Education Seminars. The seminars will be held during the keuring tour at designated locations with a focus on geographic coverage. This year three seminars will be held: Pennock Point (FL), Claybrook Farm (MI) and Prima Equestrian (ON). The seminars will be conducted the day before each of those three keurings. The format will include both lectures and hands-on experience, explaining the KWPN system, what it is that the jury looks for in each particular type of horse and why the horses are scored the way they are - to include movement/jumping, class specifications and rules. Participants will be introduced to the history, purpose and use of the linear scoresheet as well as sport- conformation review and pedigree concerns. By the end of the seminar participants will be expected to complete a linear score sheet, assign scores and verbalize their conclusions to the group. Lunch is included. Space is limited and attendees must sign up ahead of time. No observers will be permitted. No videotaping or recording! An additional fee of $300 is due to the KWPN-NA upon a successful stallion presentation for approval. Radiographs should be completed prior to presentation.for Approval (classes 910, 920, 970 and 971) Keuring Program - Page 9

10 GENERAL INFORMATION General requirements Entering Horses must be pre-entered. The owner of the hrose must be a current Full member and the current owner of record with the KWPN-NA. Refunds In case of a recent injury or illness of a horse the owner may apply for a refund of the class fee. Refunds (less a $50 handling fee) will be given if a veterinary certificate is submitted within 30 days of the keuring. No refunds will be given for pregnancy, inability to load, incorrect shoeing or other non-veterinary causes. Any late fees incurred are non-refundable. Bridle numbers Each horse will get two numbers, to be attached to both sides of the halter or bridle so that they are clearly visible. If the numbers can t be attached to a foal s halter they may be worn by the mare on both sides of her bridle. The jury must be able to see the number at all times. The numbers are not to be attached to the handler or in their pockets. Identification/Registration papers Owners must present their horse s registration paper at the keuring unless they were mailed in with the entry. The only exceptions are foals whose papers have not yet been issued or horses with a transfer in progress. Parentage verification must be completed prior to the start of keuring. Branding/Rebranding After a successful studbook inspection, mares and geldings may be branded with the KWPN lion. Stallions may be branded if they are of star quality or better. Horses in Holland have not been branded since September Imported KWPN horses that have already been accepted into the studbook may be branded in North America by pre-arrangement. Horses with faded brands may be rebranded. Handlers/Riders Handlers Foals and mares should each have their own handler. Owners with more than one horse in a class must have sufficient people present to accompany all horses into the ring for the walk-around and ribbon presentation. Handler Attire Anyone entering the ring must wear appropriate clothing and footware. If not, horses may be excused. Horses are presented by a handler and no more than one assistant. Only the handler is allowed in the cage or arena during free movement or free jumping. Handlers must wear white pants and shirts with white running shoes. Amish handlers must wear blue pants and shirts with running shoes. Assistants must wear the same. Rider attire Riders must wear light breeches, a dark riding coat, a white shirt and tie or a white turtleneck, boots and helmet. In case of excessive heat, a polo shirt may be substituted for shirt and coat with permission of the jury. Cell Phones/Smoking The use of cell phones or smoking in the arena or cage is not allowed. Horses Immunizations Horses should be current on farm vaccination requirements. Shoes Riding and Gelders horses: Foals, yearlings and two-year-old fillies and geldings may not wear shoes. Twoyear-old colts presented for stallion preapproval and horses aged three years and older may wear shoes with a maximum thickness of 8mm. Specialty shoes, corrective shoes or pads are not allowed. Harness horses: Horses two years and older may wear shoes with a maximum thickness of 12mm with a maximum width of 25mm. Again specialty shoes, corrective shoes or pads are not allowed. Horse attire In-hand: Foals and yearlings are presented in show halters: brown or black for Riding, white for Harness and either for Gelders (depending on whether they are presented as a Riding or Harness type). A rope or leather lead should be used; the use of chains is discouraged. Horses two and older are presented in a snaffle bridle: brown or black for Riding, white for Harness and either for Gelders depending on whether they are presented as a Riding or Harness type. Riding reins may be used with a bridle. 11 Tendon protectors are not allowed during the in-hand phase. Foreleg tendon protection is allowed during free movement or free jumping phase. Wraps, bell boots and leg protection on hindlegs are not allowed! The jury reserves the right to remove any type of leg or foot protection. Under Saddle: An English saddle and a bridle with a snaffle bit a simple, smoothmouthed snaffle, with not more than two joints; metal or rubber. Flash, figure eight or dropped nosebands are allowed. Martingales, auxiliary reins or other gadgets are not allowed. Boots on forelegs are allowed. Wraps, bell boots and leg protection on hindlegs are not allowed. The jury reserves the right to remove any type of leg or foot protection. Artificial means No artificial means used to enhance conformation or movement are allowed at a keuring. Drugs No drugs of any type are allowed. All horses are subject to drug testing at the discretion of the jury. Blood will be drawn from all stallions being presented for approval. Safety The jury has the right to remove or eliminate from a keuring any horse that they feel may be dangerous or may contribute to an unsafe situation. Impairment/Veterinary Disclosure A mare whose movement is irregular because of an injury may be presented if a veterinary excuse declaring that this is the result of an injury and not of a hereditary condition, is provided. The mare must be able to walk and trot. All corrective or cosmetic surgery should be disclosed in writing. Whip A plain whip (nothing tied to the end) and the use of a small box rattler are the only aids allowed. If the jury feels that the horse is negatively affected, the handler may be requested to go around again without the aids. IBOP performance test The IBOP performance test was designed as an indicator of a horse s aptitude for sport because not every horse can enter competition. Horses are eligible to perform one IBOP per year. Once horses are entered for an IBOP in a certain breeding direction, they are committed to that breeding direction for that year. They can do an IBOP in another breeding direction in another year. Scoring Scoring will be on a scale of 0 to Not executed 1 Very bad 2 Bad 3 Fairly bad 4 Clearly insufficient 5 Insufficient 6 Sufficient 7 More than sufficient 8 Good 9 Very good 10 Excellent Keuring Predicates As of January 1, 2007, the star, keur and IBOP predicates are available only within a horse s breeding direction. Star mares with an RP (Riding) designation will receive the keur predicate in the breeding direction of their performance test or sport record. Star A predicate awarded at a studbook inspection to adult horses that earn a first premium. Approximately 30% of horses inspected earn their star predicate. Keur A predicate for mares that meet conformation standards higher than that for star and meet performance requirements by either passing an IBOP or by submitting sufficient scores in sport in their chosen breeding direction. IBOP A predicate awarded that successfully complete the IBOP riding or driving test. Combined with keur eligibility, this predicate would count toward keur. Register A and Horses from Erkend Studbooks Horses with Register A papers and mares with papers from an Erkend studbook can participate in studbook inspections but need to complete additional requirements (PROK, endoscopy and/or performance). Mares are encouraged to complete these requriements prior to the keuring inspection. If they have not, they can still participate in the keuring but cannot be acceped into the studbook until those requirements are completed. Horses are not eligible for placement in the Top Fives until they can actually be accepted into the studbook (meaning all requirements are met) Keuring Program - Page 11

12 INSPECTION GUIDELINES Premium Grading Premium grading classes are generally for foals, yearlings and two-year-olds. First they are individually stood up in front of the jury. Second, they will first walk and then trot in a clockwise direction around the arena. Third, they will again be stood up in front of the jury, facing the other direction. After all horses are evaluated individually, all horses in a class will be brought back as a group in their order of go for a final walk around. The jury will then place the horses, present their premiums and give comments. Generally, because young horses can change so much from one day to the next, no scores are given out. Foals Foals should not be weaned prior to the keuring. The jury likes to see them loose at the side of the mare. The unweaned foal and mare will enter the arena together, each with their own handler. First, mare and foal will stand up next to each other in front of the jury, with the foal closest to the jury. Second, the foal will be turned loose to follow the mare and her handler around the ring. Third, the foal will be caught and stood up in front of the jury, this time facing the other direction. Foal Premiums 1st Premium: Exceeds breed standard. Indicator of highest quality. (Is equal to star status in the studbook inspection.) 2nd Premium: Meets breed standard. Some faults or lack of quality in type, conformation, and/or movement. (Is equal to studbook status in the studbook inspection.) Elimination: Horses may be eliminated if their conformation or movement precludes them from a first or second premium. Again, the foal s bridle number must be visible to the jury at all times, regardless of direction of movement. Weaned foals, wearing bridle numbers, will come in the ring with a handler, will be stood up in front of, and with the left side facing, the jury. Next the foal will be walked and trotted in-hand. And last the foal will again be stood up with the right side facing the jury. Yearlings Yearlings are shown in-hand as the weaned foals above. Fillies, colts and geldings will be in the same class. Two-Year-Olds Fillies and geldings are shown in-hand as the weaned foals above. The colt class is comparable to the first round of the stallion approvals in Holland. Colts are evaluated as stallion prospects. The pedigree will be evaluated and they will be linear scored. Free movement or jumping is required. The goal of this class is to advise breeders on whether the colt meets the criteria for approval and whether or not to present the colt for approval. Owners will receive a written evaluation with jury recommendations or conditions that should be met prior to further presentation. The owner is free to present the horse even if the jury gives negative advice at that particular time. Any stallion with a successful two-yearold presentation must undergo the required veterinary examination prior to the next step in the approval process. Studbook Inspections Riding/Gelders horses Horses in a studbook class are divided into groups of up to eight horses. Groups will stay together throughout the procedure. First horses are shown in-hand on a hard surface; standing as well as at the walk and the trot. Next they will do free movement or free jumping according to their breeding direction in a small arena or cage. Last the group will come back as a whole for a final walk around and premiums with comments on the horses by the jury. Exemption from free movement or free jumping A horse may be excused from free movement or free jumping if it has a sport predicate in its breeding direction OR if it has passed an IBOP or EPTM (NL only). Keur eligible After the studbook inspection all star mares return to the ring and be shown inhand. First they will around the ring as a group and next they will return one at a time to be shown in-hand at the walk and trot. To finish the mares will return for results and information. The jury will evaluate what they see at that moment. This class is not directly related to the scores in the studbook inspection. Keur predicate To earn her keur, a mare must be keur eligible in the specific breeding direction or be represented for conformation; PLUS She must have a minimum score of 75 points in the current IBOP or a sport record with the minimum number of points: Dressage: 1 point at Z1 (L2T4) Jumper: 5 points at M jumping (1.20m/ 4 ) Hunter: 5 points at Second Year Green Eventing: 5 points at M (Training) eventing with not more than 10 penalty points Keuring Program - Page 12

13 Dressage IBOP Part 1 The individual test The test is designed to be ridden in a small arena (20 x 40 meters). Part 2 As a group After the individual test, horses will come back in groups of up to three horses. A ringmaster will call the test. Part 2 is the same as the DG Bar Cup. If horses are entered in both they will be evaluated for the IBOP and the DG Bar Cup at the same time during this phase. Horses will be asked to do the following: Three-year-olds: will be shown at trot, canter and walk in that order. Canter on a 20 meter circle. Conformation Evaluation: Do not strip, do not dismount. Four-year-olds: will be asked to lengthen the trot and canter, to leg yield both directions and to show stretching of the neck at the trot and walk. They will be shown at trot, canter and walk, in that order. Walk: lengthening of the walk. Trot: 20m circle in both directions. Leg yield both directions. Canter: 20m circle. Medium canter on the long side. Stretching of the neck. Conformation Evaluation do not strip, do not dismount. Five-year-olds: Five-year olds will add shoulder-in and a meter circle to the above. They will be shown at trot, canter and walk, in that order. Shoulder in, two times in each direction for at least 20 meters meter circle with stretching of the neck. Special emphasis will be given to transitions and a little more collection will be expected. Dressage IBOP Scoring: The following traits are scored: Walk (2x) trot (2x) canter (2x) suppleness self carriage and balance rideability/workability Talent for dressage Maximum score is 100 points, passing score is 75 points. 16 STALLION PRESENTATION General Information KWPN Foalbook, Register A and stallions registered with an Erkend Studbook are eligible to be presented for approval. A breeding direction may be changed after consultation with the jury or upon presentation of a sport record. If a stallion is presented for stallion premium grading a simple one-page evaluation must be completed by a veterinarian. If a stallion is being presented for approval, a more complete evaluation must be completed (see General physical and soundness examination). These evaluations must be completed prior to the keuring! Stallion owners must be in possession of original registration papers. Papers must be submitted to the KWPN-NA. Parentage must be proven and DNA must be on file prior to the keuring presentation. Stallions presented for approval will be measured at the keuring. Minimum height is 160cm (approximately 15.3h). Blood will be drawn for drug testing from all stallion approval candidates. No drugs are allowed. The Approval Process There are several parts to the approval process: 1) Pedigree evaluation 2) Linear scoring conformation evaluation, walk and trot on a hard surface 2) Free movement or jumping All Riding type stallions must partidipate in free movement or jumping according to their breeding direction. Harness stallions are shown in-hand. 4) The IBOP Riding test Riding horses Dressage or Jumping Harness horses Driving IBOP. Gelders horses Any of the above. Stallions with a documented Grand Prix record are excused from the IBOP but must still be shown under saddle. 5) Veterinary requirements Stallion presented for approval should complete the veterinary requirements prior to their presentation. The veterinary requirements consist of: General physical and soundness examination A general examination of the legs, joints, tendons, hooves, testicles, etc. Endoscopic examination Stallions must have a normal, wellfunctioning breathing apparatus. The examination must be recorded on a DVD to be be evaluated by the KWPN. Radiographs Stallions must undergo a radiograph examination of 20 views specified by the KWPN and will be evaluated by the KWPN. Radiographs may be taken any time after September 1st of a stallion s two-year-old year. Digital preferred. Semen evaluation Stallions must undergo a semen and breeding soundness evaluation submitted on the Society for Theriogenology form. Semen quality will be published in the stallion s report. The report will be evaluated by the KWPN. 6) Performance test Stallions have to complete either a 21- Day or 5-Day Test. Grand Prix level stallions must complete a KWPN 5-day character evaluation. All other stallions must complete the KWPN 21-Day test. Note: The KWPN does not accept results from a 100-Day or 30-Day Test held by any other registry in North America. Keuring Presentation Pre-approval for Stallions Two and Older This is considered equal to the First Round of the stallion selections in Holland. The goal is to advise breeders on whether to maintain the horse as a stallion; whether he meets the criteria for approval; and whether he is a suitable candidate for approval. The owner is free to present the horse for approval no matter the outcome. Any stallion that has a successful first round must undergo the required veterinary examination before being presented for approval. Approval for Three-Year-Old Stallions This is considered equal to a combination of the Second and Third Rounds of the stallion selections in Holland. Upon a successful presentation and completion of the veterinary work the stallion would be considered Aangewezen. This is equal to the a stallion selected for the performance test in Holland. Offspring by an Aangewezen stallion shall be Register A in North America and Register B in Holland. Foals on both continents may be upgraded upon full approval of the stallion. Approval for Four-Year-Old Stallions The criteria and procedures are the same as those for the three-year-olds above, except there is no free movement or free jumping. Upon a successful presentation and completion of the veterinary work the stallion would be considered Aangewezen. This is equal to the a stallion selected for the performance test in Holland. Offspring by an Aangewezen stallion shall be Register A in North America and Register B in Holland. Foals on both continents may be upgraded upon full approval of the stallion Keuring Program - Page 16

17 Approval for Stallions Five and Older Stallions five and older must be entered in and excel at Young Horse competitions, or excel in sport, at levels commensurate with their age, prior to presentation. Sport results must be submitted prior to entry in the keuring. The keuring procedure is the same as for four-year-old stallions. Approval for Stallions with a Grand Prix record or equivalent A stallion with a Grand Prix (or equivalent) sport record, or a stallion that has a number of offspring that are successful in sport will have to be linear scored, but do not need to be shown under saddle. Veterinary requirements must also be met. The Dutch term Aangewezen refers to a stallion that has passed the third round of the KWPN stallion approvals and has been selected for the performance test. Requirements after being Aangewezen Stallions not competing at Grand Prix or equivalent After a stallion is Aangewezen, he must meet the following requirements: Four- and five-year old stallions must be presented under saddle at a keuring to evaluate progress in sport and training. He must perform in either the DG Bar Cup, the ISF Cup or the Harness IBOP. At the end of the competition year the stallion s show record must be submitted. Stallions five or older must be presented at an independent stallion-testing facility for a 21-Day Test. The stallion will be trained and ridden (driven) by riders/staff of the facility. On the final day the stallion will be tested by professional riders (drivers). The start and end of the testing will coincide with the North American keuring tour. A jury will evaluate the stallion at the start of the test and a member of the KWPN stallion committee will evaluate the stallion at the end of the test. After passing the 21-Day Test the stallion will be designated Approved. Stallions competing at Grand Prix or equivalent After a stallion becomes Aangewezen, he must meet the following requirements: Stallions that are performing or have performed at Grand Prix level must be presented at a 5-Day Test for a character/temperament evaluation. A member of the KWPN stallion committee will evaluate the stallion. After passing the 5-Day Test the stallion will be designated as Approved. Requirements after being Approved Stallions should compete at Fourth Level Dressage, Level 7/8 Jumping, Regular Working Hunter or Intermediate level Eventing by age seven or eight respectively. Competition is desirable but not necessary after passing the 21-Day Test. Offspring To retain Approved status, a stallion s offspring must meet certain requirements at three times during his breeding career. Within two years after approval a stallion must present a minimum of ten offspring at the dam s side for foal inspection. Foals can be at different locations although preference is to see them at one keuring location as a group. By time the oldest offspring are five years old, a stallion must present ten offspring (three to five years old) at studbook inspections. By time the oldest offspring are eleven years old, sport results of ten offspring (five to eleven years old) must be submitted for evaluation. If a stallion is unable to meet the above requirements, the owner may apply for a one-year extension. An extension will be granted only if the KWPN stallion committee sees potential and the owner has an acceptable reason (e.g., veterinary) as to why the stallion did not meet his requirements. After successfully completing all the previously stated requirements, a stallion will have met all the approval criteria and may be permanently approved Keuring Program - Page 17

18 LINEAR SCORING A linear score sheet, consisting of an upper and a lower beam, is filled in for each horse. The lower beam contains conformation, movement and jumping components divided into 28 characteristics for dressage horses, 36 for jumpers and 24 for harness horses. By marking a through i the jury gives information as to whether a certain characteristic is average (e-f range) or leans more toward one extreme or the other. The upper beam gives a score for conformation and movement of the horse on a scale from 40 to 100 points in 5 point increments. The upper beam for movement consists of scores for walk, trot, canter and selfcarriage for dressage; canter, reflexes, technique and scope for jumping and; movement and overall impression for harness. Upper beam conformation (all types) 1. Body: shape (rectangular - square) A horse is square when the length of the horse (from point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock) is equal to the height of the withers. A horse is rectangular when the length is greater than the height. Horses need rectangular conformation in order to be athletic and elastic. 2. Body: direction (uphill - downhill) The direction of the body as compared to the horizontal. A horse is harder to collect when built on the forehand (downhill). 3. Head-neck connection (light - heavy) This trait is divided in two; the poll and the throatlatch. Light: a long poll, light throatlatch and small distance between the top and bottom of the neck. Heavy: a short poll, a heavy throatlatch and a larger distance between the top and bottom of the neck. 4. Length of neck (long - short) The length of the axis between the halfway point of the head-neck connection and the middle of the front of the shoulder (in relation to the other body measurements). 5. Position of neck (vertical - horizontal) The angle of the neck with the horizontal when standing naturally. Dressage horses need a more vertical neck for easy self-carriage and balance. Jumpers need a more horizontal neck for collection just before and during take-off. 6. Muscling of neck (heavy - poor) Emphasis on the topline. Heavy: a topline with a slight cresting of a thick neck; a rounded topline is a matter of muscling. Poor: a thin neck, often with a weak connection of topline into withers (dip before withers). 7. Height of withers (high - flat) The height of the wither is measured as the distance between the horizontal through the highest point of the wither and the horizontal through the lowest point of the wither. 8. Position of the shoulder (sloping - straight) The angle of the shoulder with the horizontal. 9. Line of the back (roached - weak) The topline from the withers to the loins. A smooth, well-muscled topline enables the horse to move with good use of the back. 10. Line of the loins (roached - weak) The topline from the back to the croup. Strong muscling is needed to stretch the back and hindquarters during the second phase of the jump. 11. Shape of croup (sloping - flat) The angle made by a line from the point of the hip to the point of the buttock. Too much slope is bad for flexibility of the pelvis, which is needed for collection, especially in piaffe and passage. 12. Length of croup (long - short) The distance from the point of the hip to the point of the buttock. For proportional conformation: the forehand, middle and hindquarters should form equal sections. 13. Stance of forelegs (over at the knee - back at the knee) The angle made by lines drawn through the forearm and the cannon, as seen from the side. The forelegs should be straight to insure durability Keuring Program - Page 18

19 14. Stance of hindlegs (sickle hocked - straight) The angle made by lines drawn through the gaskin and cannon, as seen from the side. The hock angle should be approximately 150 degrees. 15. Stance of pasterns (weak - upright) The angle made by the pastern of the foreleg with the horizontal. A pastern that is too short and/or upright is more susceptible to concussive injury; a pastern that is long and too sloped ( soft or weak ) is more easily strained. 16. Shape of feet (wide - narrow) The relation between the coronet band and the carrying surface when seen from the front. The feet should be large and symmetrical. Note: when hooves are not equal, the narrow hoof is considered to be abnormal. 17. Heels (high - low) The height of the heels of the front hooves as measured from the ground surface to the coronary band. The heels are responsible for correct linear position of the foot and pastern. Broad and moderately high heels are best for soundness 18. Quality of legs (lean - blurred) The measure of leanness (lack of swelling) in the hindlegs. Lean legs show soundness and general quality. 19. Substance of legs (heavy - fine) The circumference of the leg, including the size of the joints, in relation to the size of the horse s body. (Not scored in harness horses.) Upper beam - Conformation: The total score for a horse s conformation. Upper Beam Riding Movement (Dressage/Jumping/Gelders types) 20. Walk: length of stride (long - short) The length of the stride. 21. Walk: correctness (toed in - toed out) This is evaluated from the front. When hooves turn in from the fetlock, horses are toed-in. When hooves turn out from the fetlock, horses are toed-out. 22. Trot: length of stride (long - short) The length of the stride. 23. Trot: elasticity (elastic - stiff) The measure of elasticity with which the movement flows through the body and is then absorbed by the legs. 24. Trot: impulsion (powerful - weak) The measure in which the horse pushes off the ground with the hind legs. 25. Trot: balance (carrying -pushing) A combination of body position and the measure in which the hind leg carries. 26. Canter: length of stride (long - short) The length of the stride. 27. Canter: impulsion (powerful - weak) The measure in which the horse pushes off the ground with the hind legs. 28. Canter: balance (carrying - pushing) A combination of body position and the measure in which the hind leg carries. Upper beam Movement Dressage: The total scorefor a horse s movement is the average of the walk, trot, canter and self-carriage. Jumper and Hunter: horses receive scores for the walk and trot but they do not count in the overall score. Upper Beam Jumping 29. Take off: direction (upwards - forwards) The measure in which the horse is able to push the withers upward. 30. Take off: quickness (quick - slow) The time elapsed during the last canter stride before the jump the time between when the forelegs and the hindlegs hit the ground and the moment when the horse actually leaves the ground. 31. Technique: foreleg (bent - stretched) The measure in which the shoulder bends in combination with the upper arm, forearm and the cannon; tuck. 32. Technique: back (rounded - hollow) The manner in which the neck and back follow the arc over the jump; bascule. 33. Technique: haunches (open - fixed) The measure in which the angles of the haunches are able to open during the second phase of the jump. 34. Scope (much - little) The ability of the horse to jump with upward power while at the same time developing a forward direction. 35. Elasticity (supple - stiff) The measure in which the entire jump (including the landing) flows; the horse must be elastic through the body. 36. Care (careful - not careful) The natural ability of the horse to not make any errors over a jump; the horse s desire not to knock down a rail. Upper beam - jumping The total score for a horse s jumping is the average of the canter, reflexes, technique and scope. Upper Beam Harness Movement Upper beam movement (for harness breeding direction) 19. Walk: length of stride (long - short) The length of the stride at the walk. 20. Walk: correctness (toed in - toed out) This is evaluated from the front. When hooves turn in from the fetlock, they are toed-in. When the hooves turn out from the fetlock, they are toed-out. 21. Trot: self-carriage (much - little) The combination of body position and the measure in which the hindleg carries. 22. Trot: suspension (long - short) The duration of the moment at the trot that the horse comes off the ground with power. 23. Trot: action of the forelegs (high -low) The measure in which the horse brings the forearm to the horizontal. 24. Trot: use of hindleg The measure in which the horse pushes off with the hindleg. Upper beam: harness movement The total score for a horse s movement Keuring Program - Page 19
