3 Stage 1 Guerrero I am writin this letter to you so you knowd I was fine. The last time I wrote you I was still in Texas. Well, our Company is now joined up with General John Pershing and we is gonna chase old Pancho Villa into Mexico and catch him. Right now we is heading for a town called Guerrero where we will fight along with the famous 7 th Cavalry. My friend Frenchy said that s the same regiment that fought under General Custer at the Big Horn. I hope we see some action, I sure am tired of ridin around in the hot sun and eating beans. Give my love to Mother and little Carol Ann. Will writ agin soon. Your Son Henry March 29, 1916 STARTING POSITION: Standing behind right fence, holding can of beans with both hands. 4 Stage 2 Parral I am still fine. We sure had some excitement in Guerrero. We must have killed over 50 mexs, only 5 of our guys were hurt but nobody I knowd. Anyway, we is now camped in a little villa called Parral for some rest. The main Column has moved north, we will catch up with them later. I met Major Frank Tompkins, he said I was the best rider he ever sawed, he let me have one of his personal horses. It s the tallest horse I ever was on but he sure listens good. 5 Stage 3 Leaving Parral I am still fine. We were sure lucky to get out of Parral alive. As we was leavin the town we was attacked by hundreds of Mexican soljiers. They were wearing uniforms so they was not Pancho s men. I heard Maj. Tompkins say they was Carrancistas led by a real Mexican General. I guess we ain t got too many friends down here. We ran and fought for days. We lost 5 men and 6 was wounded including the new guy that we call Whip. It could have been worst if it wernt for the Buffalo soljiers from the 10 th Cavalry. They showd up just in time to help us. Take care of yourself, the trees here remind me of back home. Your son Henry May 2, 1916 STARTING POSITION: Standing behind mine cart. 6 Stage 4 Whiskey and Water I am still fine. It sure is hot here, I miss the cool evening breezes from the hills north of home. We is now joined up with the main column and we is ridin to a place called Carrizal. I went to vist my friend Whip at the hospital wagon, Dr. McGillicuddy says he will be back to fightin soon. I don t know the Doctor s real name, we just call him McGillicuddy after the whiskey on account of he drinks a lot. Anyway, the doctor says we have to boil our water before we drink it. It sure ain t fun drinkin warm water in the hot sun. Too bad we can t have some of the docs whiskey. I finally got some army pay so I am sending some home for you. Maybe you could use it to build that new corral you wanted. Your son Henry June 15, 1916 STARTING POSITION: Standing behind mine cart. Holding flask in left hand. 7 Stage 5 Carrizal I am still fine. We is now camped outside of Carrizal. Word was that Pancho his self was there and we had him surrounded. Turns out that Pancho is long gone and we is up against the regular Mex Army again. I thought we would a quit and gone home but Captain Boyd gave the order to attack the Mexs anyway. I guess he wanted to get promoted or sumtin. Well, we fought good but not good enuf. Captain Boyd got his self killed and the mexs captured near on 30 men. We are heading home now. Looks like Pancho will get away. The President says we have more important fightin to do in Urope against the Huns. Oh yeah, I saw one of those flying macheens today. Got to go. Will writ agin soon.
