1 Cal-Ore Wetlands & Waterfowl Council Specklebelly News Winter /Spring Edition Saturday April 11, 2015 Klamath Basin Refuge Public Hunt Meeting COWWC Lunch & Refuge Clean-Up Day The Klamath Basin Refuge s Public Hunt Meeting will begin at 10am on Saturday, April 11 in the Dave Menke Education Building located across from Refuge HQ, adjacent to the Discovery Marsh parking area. The meeting ends at noon, with the CAL-ORE Wetlands and Waterfowl Council lunch immediately following, served inside the Education Building. CAL-ORE is happy to provide the lunch at no charge to all in attendance. The COWWC refuge clean-up follows lunch. The annual event to beautify the refuge will kick off after lunch. In addition we will provide garbage bags for those who choose to drive the Refuge roads to participate in litter pick-up, for items such as empty cans, plastic bags, paper garbage, etc. Bring your waders we may do some water cleanup. All garbage bags can be left at the Discovery Marsh parking lot or at the main Lower Klamath Refuge entrance for COWWC to pick up and take to the Waste Management dump. Last years turnout was very good. We encourage as many people as possible to attend and please consider bringing youths. We hope to see many children and teens on Saturday as it will provide an opportunity for education and action while taking care of our Refuges!

2 WATER ON THE REFUGE By Dick Marcillac HABITAT CONDITIONS ON TULELAKE NWR Spring conditions on the Tulelake side are a little bit better than the spring of We have received more rain in the spring of Saturation of the soil is better than last year. No water for the walking wetlands again this year. Due to less than 10% snow pack right now, it is hard to say if the farmers will have enough water through the year for irrigation. Breeding conditions on the Tulelake side could be the same as 2014, with possibly a little positive change. Drought conditions will severely impact habitat through the summer months. HABITAT CONDITIONS ON LOWER KLAMATH NWR Habitat conditions for Lower Klamath NWR are poor at this time, and will be increasingly more severe throughout the summer months. Early nesting success could be fair. This year grain planting on Lower Klamath will be below last year with only two small units being planted, compared to last year s five units. At this time the only planting of fields with grain will be unit 4C and 7A. Once again, conditions for Lower Klamath NWR look to be dry again for the fall, with no anticipation of water coming though D plant to supplement LK. The outlook right now, could potentially be worse than Newsletter in June/July will have better true conditions, since water decisions will have been made by then. DEVIL S GARDEN There is one plus this year, with parts of the Devil s Garden receiving good amounts of rain water, flooding some of the seasonal marshes and ponds, in the area has occurred. Breeding for honkers, mallards, and cinnamon teal will probably be normal.

3 Upcoming Events Annual Cal-Ore Memorial Shoot By Tony Bocchi There was a demand for the shoot that we did not think was out there. So we decided to start the COWWC Memorial Shoot, including all of our friends and relatives lost. Last year the crowd built to almost 60 shooters and we expect more this year. This year the shoot will be held on Saturday, June 20 th. Registration will start at 11:00 with a tri tip dinner to follow the shoot. The shoot will be the same format as in the past consisting of teams of 4-6 shooters competing for top honors. The winning team will be honored with a plaque that will be placed in the Tulelake Sporting Clays range office. Dinner along with drinks and prizes will be handed out at the end of the shoot. Please remember that alcoholic beverages are not allowed until the shoot is over and all guns have been cased. On a sad note, and one that the shoot was resurrected for, we have lost one of our own that many of you knew. Don Kirby s Brother, Bob died this winter from an illness, on January 25, He will be sorely missed by those who knew him. He definitely went before his time. Please join us in June. This shoot will be a wonderful way to remember the good old times that we have all had with loved ones who have passed away, and a great way to raise money to improve habitat for our feathered friends and promote youth hunting. For more information please contact Don Kirby either by phone or , or kirb1@cot.net. ANNUAL Cal-Ore Jr. Hunt BBQ By Tony Bocchi On the longer range outlook, the Cal Ore Jr Hunt BBQ will again be held at Sheepy Ridge Campground. Plagued by low to no water and an economy that was anemic at best, the Board of Cal-Ore sat back and planned for a lower turnout last year and we were pleasantly surprised with the attendance. Even with the odd

4 start to Oregon and California waterfowl season and thus the Youth hunts, we still had approximately 90 kids attend and win prizes. Last year, there were about 70 prizes drawn at the BBQ and all Jr. Hunters received a grab bag of hunting goodies. The prize list included two guns, decoys, calls, shells, back packs, and other water fowling items. Many of the drawing items were larger than the Jr. Hunter that won them. It was quite a day! The Jr BBQ is really starting to get a regional name with many large donors such as Benelli jumping on the bandwagon to make a great day for all the kids. Stay tuned for updates in the next two newsletters! Fall Dinner and Fund Raiser a Sell Out By Tony Bocchi The 2014 Fall Dinner for Cal-Ore Wetlands and Waterfowl Council was a sellout. Our Dinner was a great success and raised many thousands of dollars to help fund Cal-Ore s many projects. This year better get your tickets early. The dinner will be held on the second Saturday as usual November 14 th, with the Auctioneer Bryan Mallard keeping things moving along. He is quite entertaining to boot. The dinner wound up a little after 9:00 pm so all of you could get to bed for another early start to hunting the next day. We were thanked by many for winding up around 9 pm. I would like to thank all who donated their time and money to make the Dinner a success (catch the next newsletter for a complete list of donors). Without your help we would not have the event that we have. We are already planning for the second Saturday of November when will do it all over again. If anyone has ideas or complaints please contact any board member, we will be glad to hear from you. Thanks again for your support and see you all next fall. Stay tuned for more details as we get a little closer.
