1 March 2013 Newsletter Dedicated to bringing ENJOYMENT to all aspects of boating. Our web site Commodore s Message A big 'Thank You" to our guest speaker Caitlin Birdsall, Coordinator, BC Cetaceans Sightings Network of the Vancouver Aquarium for her interesting look at Whales, Dolphins and Porpoise found in our local waters. At our meeting on March 21st, Marv and Judi Everett will be providing us with a DVD presentation of their 7 week cruise north as far as Gardner Canal, Princess Royal Island, Calvert Island in This should be very valuable to those interested in expanding their cruising realm. Also, Judi has offered to bring a Carrot Cake for all of us. And a friendly reminder that annual dues payments will be greatly appreciated Cheers, Dave Dakin Page 1 of 6

2 B.C. Cetacean Sights Network Presentation at the February 21, 2013 General Meeting Caitlin Birdsall s knowledge about cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) and her enthusiasm for the subject was contagious at the February Meeting. At the end of her talk many of us lined up to help out by filling in the evaluation form. A sampling of some of the information I found interesting. Scientists are using citizen volunteers to help them learn more about the 23 species of whales, dolphins and porpoises plus the 4 species of seas turtles that occur along the 25,000 km coastline of BC. I was unaware that there were any seas turtles along the BC Coast and that the Leatherback Turtle can grow to 9 feet. Male Killer Whales always stay with their mother s group but mate outside the group, a habit that prevents inbreeding. The Bigg s (previously called Transient) Killer Whales feed on mammals and seals make up about 55 % of their diet. They tend to be quieter because their prey has excellent hearing. The Resident Group are more vocal and feed primarily on salmon. The Fraser River Chinook Salmon makes up about 72 % of their diet. Page 2 of 6

3 The preferred food of the whales is studied by scooping up floating remains of salmon that the Killer Whales have eaten. Less is known about the Offshore Killer Whales but one of their food sources are deep water Sharks along the Continental Shelf. In general the Killer Whales are particular about what they eat making them vulnerable to any loss of their favourite food. Having no sense of smell makes Killer Whales vulnerable to things like oil spills. One group that swam through the oil spill from the Exxon Valdez has had no offspring bourn since that event 23 years ago in The much louder noise from shipping activities can overshadow the eco location sound used by Killer Whales for finding salmon. Grey Whales feed on the bottom and can sometimes be seen in shallow water on their side as they scoop up small food sources in the mud. Reporting Normal Sightings of Whales, Dolphines, Porpoises and Sea Turtles To help to conserve these species, all sightings of normal, healthy cetaceans and sea turtles can be reported to the BC Cetaceans sightings Network at: Telephone, I-SAW-ONE ( ) address, or Website Reporting Marine Mammals in Distress (not Vancouver Aquarium) For sightings of sick, injured, distressed, or dead marine mammals can be reported to the BC Marine Mammal Response Network at Page 3 of 6

4 Summer Cruising The Club Executive has developed a schedule of cruising opportunities and welcomes suggestions from any Club Members about additional activities. So far, in addition to the usual Racing Schedule, the list includes Gorge Harbour in May, Roscoe Bay and Copeland Islands/Lund in June, and possibly Shoal Bay in September. Pacific Playgrounds Marina News Revenue Sharing Opportunity During the summer months the marina sometimes has to turn boats away due to a lack of space. If you are going to be away from your slip for a week or more let the office know and if they rent it out the income will be shared. Also, as of April 1 st when the HST is eliminated, tax on moorage will be reduced by 7 %. Page 4 of 6
