1 The Silver Arrow Journal Official Newsletter of the Silver Arrow Bowmen Issue The Presidents Podium- The most important thing coming up in the next meeting is the extension of our lease with Washoe County Parks. I really need all of the Board of directors there, as the Parks Department will be taking the lease back to the County Commission for approval on April 24, so it can be renewed by the May 2 nd Deadline. Right now there are no real changes being proposed, only an extension of the existing contract. Hope to see you at the next meeting, Monday March 12 th, at 6:30 The Scheels store, upstairs classroom next to the Archery Department. Key Three Items of Business Item #1 Washoe County Parks Lease Item #2 BLM/WCPD 5 year plan Item #3 Finalizing the Bonanza plan and the flier We may also discuss: Indoor Range Project Next work party Animal Inventory Meeting information In the future, Silver Buckles will not be awarded at the Bonanza! One of the most significant actions at the last meeting was a vote on the awarding of Silver Buckles at the Bonanza. The issue was sparked during the financial report, when the Board was informed of the cost of buckles this year. We had run low on our inventory after last years Bonanza and the fact that the Board had added several senior classifications over the last few years. The cost of the buckle order this year is $1495, as we had to order 10 full size adult buckles ($68), 4 of the smaller young adult buckles($60) and 9 of the ladies bracelets ($58). The cost of these went up about $10 each over what they had been the last two years. Wilk Wilkerson said that he was opposed to us continuing to buy buckles from the general fund and that the only buckles that should be awarded are the ones that had a Buckle Sponsor donate the money for them. He also asserted that we (the board) had voted on this many years ago when we used to have the meetings at TMCC by Meadowood and that we were not following that decision. While that may have occurred at some time, it did not occur since I have been President and we have subsequently addressed the awards issue every year at Board 1
2 meetings, most recently last year when it was voted to add yet another category to the buckles, that being senior master. Before the economic downturn, we would get donations from numerous small local businesses. In the past 3 years, this has virtually disappeared. Now most of the cost of the buckles is offset by the donation from Kohls ($ ) and a few from our own members and occasionally from Sportsmans and Scheels. This year, the cost beyond our anticipated donations (Kohl s) would be almost $500. Wilk felt that we should not be buying any buckles over and above what we had donations for. He made a motion to that effect; it was seconded by Dale Taylor and approved by a majority of the directors present. As a practical matter of a business, we can not wait until donations come in to order buckles, because they and all of the other awards for that matter, must be ordered at least two to three months in advance of the event. So this effectively ends the practice and tradition of awarding silver buckles at the Bonanza after this year (since we have already ordered and paid for the buckles this year, we will be awarding them). The Secretary Says Financial- We are caught up with all of our major recurring bills. If you would like to know more specifics about the Club s finances, please come to the meeting, where we will discuss it in detail. Membership We signed up two new members at the last meeting, welcome to Matt and Mark Jackson. We also had three more new members sign up during the month, welcome to Josh Jenni, Bill Dipper and Ron Savini & Family With our latest update of the membership, adding our 5 newest members, we have 121 active members. We are continually in the process of updating our membership list, if you have had a change of address or other information, please let us know! Also, we really need to update the list, so please send your to our new address at : silverarrowbowmens@hotmail.com The Range Captain s Corner Out on the Range The Lemmon Valley Range remains open to members and the general public every day, via the lower parking lot and walk over gate. There are 28 bail butts available for shooting. Please leave the range clean! Remember, we will be doing our yearly gate code change soon. The new gate code will be sent out to all members in good standing once it is changed. 2
3 Work party Our next work party has not been scheduled, but it would be a good idea to take advantage of the good weather we are having! Call Dale if you have any ideas or questions on work parties. The Web We are still building more information into the new web site, so be patient. You will see a few changes that Heather has made and the newsletters are now available there. If you have any information, photos or other things to add to it, please let us know!! I know that a number of you have sent in photos to heather and I, keep doing it, we will get a system figured out on how to best get them on the web site Hunting information March, if you were going to put in for spring turkey, you are too late! All of the 2011/2012 seasons are over Remember, the Deadline for big game applications will be April 16 th this year. Most of the big game seasons will start on the same dates they did last year, whether they fall on a weekend or week day. Preliminary recommendations have moved only a couple of seasons, but mostly only by a day or two. I already see that the preliminary recommendation for archery deer once again shaves a couple of more days off the season they shortened by a week last year!!! Also, the anti hunters are gearing up to take another run at our bear season, using some of the same strategies as they used in California. One of these strategies is to allege that archery hunting is cruel and a wounded bear could go into someone s yard, therefore endangering them. Game Board meetings are important! April 16 th,tag application deadline for all big game in Nevada (except Mt Lion) June 18 th, Big Game Draw results are out(tentative ) August 1 st, Archery Antelope and Cow Elk begins(tentative ) August 8 th, Archery Deer begins (tentative ) August 20 th, Archery Antelope ends(tentative ) August 24 th, Archery Cow Elk ends(tentative ) August 25 th, Archery Bull Elk begins(tentative ) Sept. 14 th, Archery Bull elk ends(tentative ) Mild weather = Good opportunity to practice at the Range February was a pretty good month out at the range, with quite a few people taking advantage of it! However, March seems to have come in like a lion with high winds and snow Still if you pick your days, it can be quite pleasant out there 3
4 All about Matt Matt Bertero, one of our younger members who attended most of our shoots last year, once again competed in the Rocky Mountain Elk Shows Elk calling contest. Matt got to take a couple of days off from school so he could travel to Las Vegas with his Dad (Mike) and compete. He took 2 nd place in his division in the individual competition and first place in the group division. Congratulations Matt! Matt also competed in the timed pop up 3-D shoot, making it into the final round before he got eliminated Please let me know about your hunts, good stories are what I am looking for, whether you took an animal or not. I will put them in the story of the month section 4
