Illinois Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife Resources Administrative Report 8 November 25 HUNTER ACTIVITY AND WILDLIFE HARVEST IN ILLINOIS: COUNTY AVERAGES FOR through 23-4 William L. Anderson, Wildlife Harvest and Human Dimensions Research Program' Craig A. Miller, Wildlife Harvest and Human Dimensions Research Program' Linda K. Campbell, Wildlife Harvest and Human Dimensions Research Program i Abstract: Data from the through 23-4 Illinois Hunter Harvest Surveys were used to calculate average values for the number of hunters, days afield, and wildlife harvested for each county in the state. Results are presented for 19 game hunting categories: rabbit, quail, pheasant, dove, gray partridge, woodcock, common snipe, rail, crow, groundhog, fox squirrel, gray squirrel, deer-long gun, deer-archery, raccoon, red fox, gray fox, coyote, and opossum. The Illinois Hunter Harvest Survey (IHHS) has been conducted annually since 1956 to obtain information on hunter activity and wildlife harvest in the state. This mail-letter survey, which samples licensed resident hunters, documents the temporal and geographical distribution of hunter activity and wildlife harvest. The survey included 24 game hunting categories (GHCs) in and 21-2 through 23-4, and 23 GHCs in 2-1, with data being collected at the county level. The results of each year's survey were summarized in annual reports, (Miller, Campbell, and Yeagle 2; Miller, Campbell, Yeagle, and Anderson 21; Miller, Anderson, Campbell and Yeagle 23; Miller, Anderson, Campbell, and Colligan 24; Miller, Anderson,Campbell, and Leiter 24), which were distributed to appropriate personnel 'Illinois Natural History Survey.

within and outside the Illinois Department of Natural Resources(IDNR). The data were presented by administrative region, wildlife management unit, and the entire state for each GHC. Personnel in the IDNR, as well as in other agencies, frequently need to examine hunter-activity and wildlife-harvest data at the county or sub-regional level. Unfortunately, sample sizes become prohibitively small when data for each year are spread across GHCs and 12 counties. To overcome this shortcoming, the results of several annual surveys must be combined and averages calculated. The present report presents hunter activity and wildlife harvest for 19 GHCs in each county of the state, as averaged for through Two earlier reports provide 5-year county averages for the periods through and through (Anderson, Campbell, and Witzany 1995; Anderson, Miller, and Campbell 21). These reports, as well as the present one, provide data for the same 19 GHCs. METHODS AND MATERIALS Methods and materials used for conducting the IHHS were described in the annual reports (Miller, Campbell, and Yeagle 2; Miller, Campbell, Yeagle, and Anderson 21; Miller, Anderson, Campbell, and Yeagle 23; Miller, Anderson, Campbell, and Colligan 24; Miller, Anderson, Campbell, and Leiter 24). Name-address cards, which were inserted into each book of 2

resident hunting licenses, were filled out and mailed to the IDNR by license vendors or purchasers for the through 23-4 hunting seasons. In all years, the mailing list was supplemented with names-addresses of Illinois Habitat Stamp purchasers. Participants were mailed a self-administered questionnaire with cover letter and return envelope after the hunting seasons-- in March or April. This mailing was followed 1 days later with a thank you/reminder postcard to nonrespondents. After waiting another 1 days, a second questionnaire, cover letter, and return envelope were mailed to nonrespondents. The second mailing was followed 1 days later with a postcard thank you/reminder. A computer program was used to transfer the data from returned questionnaires to a computer file, after which the data were analyzed. The number of hunters, days afield, and wildlife harvested were calculated for each GHC. Five-year averages were calculated for each county by combining data for through 23-4 and then developing an appropriate program using SPSS 1.. Because of changes in the 2-1 questionnaire, it was necessary to limit county averages for fox squirrel and gray squirrel to 4 years (1999- and 21-2 through 23-4). RESULTS AND DISCUSSION For through 23-4, the annual sales of resident hunting licenses (regular, sportsmen's, and senior combined) averaged 292,358 and the number of active licensed resident hunters averaged 263,9 (Table 1). The mailing list for the

IHHS included 3, names-addresses in all years, of which an average of 2,892 received questionnaires via the U.S. Postal Service. An average of 1,945 questionnaires were returned for an average response rate of 67.2%. On average, 1,99 (98.1%) of the returned questionnaires were usable. Sample sizes for the 19 GHCs are summarized in Table 2. The number of hunters, days afield, and wildlife harvested for each of the GHCs, as averaged for through 23-4, are presented by county and administrative region (Fig. 1) in Tables The GHCs are presented in the following order: rabbit, quail, pheasant, dove, gray partridge, woodcock, common snipe, rail, crow, groundhog, fox squirrel, gray squirrel, deerlong gun, deer-archery, raccoon, red fox, gray fox, coyote, and opossum. Total squirrel (fox and gray combined) hunters are presented by county and administrative region in Table 22. For purposes of this report, the geographical range of the pheasant was limited to 68 counties in northern and central Illinois (Fig. 2). Similarly, the geographical range of the gray partridge was limited to 37 counties in northern and northwestern portions of the state (Fig. 2). Readers are reminded that the estimates of hunter activity and wildlife harvest presented in this report are projections made from systematic samples of resident hunting license buyers. No adjustments were made for known biases inherent in the sampling technique. Hunter activity and harvest for ducks, geese, and coots can be obtained from the Illinois Waterfowl 4

Hunter Survey, which is available from the Waterfowl Program in the Division of Wildlife Resources. Harvest data for deer and turkey, as recorded at check stations and the turkey phone-in system, are available from the Forest Wildlife Program. Harvest data for furbearers taken by trappers are available from the Furbearer Program. Acknowledgements. Appreciation is extended to Sandra Vistine and Geriann Albers for data processing. This study was funded in part by Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Project W- 112-R, the IDNR, Illinois Natural History Survey, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, cooperating.
