Introduction Background The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission private lands hunter survey and a revised wildlife management area (WMA) hunter survey were first implemented for the hunting season. The present report describes the methods and gives the results of the harvest on both private and public lands. Purpose This survey was conducted to determine hunter satisfaction with the deer season and the number of deer the hunters had been able to harvest. Estimates of the following were obtained in total and for both private and public lands: Number of hunters. Overall hunting satisfaction. Overall number of hunter days and harvest for deer. Number of hunter days and harvest for deer per county. Number of hunter days and harvest for deer by FWC Administration Area and FWC Management Zone. Harvest of bucks and does. Number of points for bucks harvested 1

Methodology Questionnaires were sent by mail to 65,666 registered hunters asking them to participate in the survey. The sample was comprised of holders of licenses and permits that conferred a hunting privilege during the hunting season (August 23, 2010 March 3, 2011). The sample frame was further defined as follows: holders of Disability, Lifetime, Resident, and 5-year Hunting licenses valid for some period during the season. Sampling was proportional to the strata sizes for the season. The sample was drawn from the FWC Hunter License database and de-duped. Every other licensee was selected to participate in this survey. The remaining licensees were set aside for use in an Online Only test version of the Deer Harvest Study Sample License Type Licensees Percentage Annual 54, % Lifetime 6, % 5 Year 3, % Disability 1, % Total 65, % Questionnaires were mailed out during July, As in the past, respondents were given a choice to complete the paper questionnaire and return it by mail or complete the survey online. The content of the paper and online questionnaires was identical. A copy of the questionnaire from the season appears on the next page. Responses were accepted between July and September A total of 2,543 hunters completed usable surveys. Of these, 1,768 had hunted deer during the hunting season (August 23, 2010 March 3, 2011) and 775 had not. 2

Caveats Self-administered data input errors: Because many of the surveys were self-administered by respondents, it was impossible to enforce a logical tally of answers. For example, for each respondent, the total number of days hunted should ideally match the number of days split by private lands and public lands, which are captured not as a total but by 67 individual counties. This did not always occur. As a result, tallies and estimates vary slightly depending on which numbers were used to calculate them. Low numbers of hunters within individual counties: For some counties, the number of returns received from hunters who indicated that they hunted within that given area was quite small and sometimes zero. As a result, it was not possible to calculate estimates/projections for all measures. The impact of the small base sizes also reduces the stability of estimates when there is large variability in the data (data better matches a bell-shaped curve as sample size grows). Some lower range estimates were negatives values and were eliminated. 4

Summary of Findings The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) recently conducted a survey among registered hunters to determine their satisfaction with the season and the number of deer they were able to harvest. A total of 2,543 hunters completed the survey, either online or via a mail questionnaire. Of these, 1,768 had hunted deer during the hunting season and 775 had not. Key findings from this study are summarized below: Hunting by Season Just over two-thirds of the hunters contacted indicate that they had gone hunting during the season. Overall the incidence of hunting is up from last year and just a little higher than in 2009 and The highest participation rate was for the General Gun Season where participation stood at 64.6%. Participation was lowest for Crossbow Season (4.5%). Number of Days Hunted and Deer Harvested Given the data collected by this survey, the best estimate of the number of deer harvested during the entire season is 176,791 with a range of 165,190 to 188,391. This is up from 151,679 last season but about the same as two years ago (179,224). The best estimate for the number of hunter days during the season is 2,789,938 with a range of 2,684,642 to 2,895,234. This level is higher than last season (2,670,348), the 2009 season (2,503,274) and also the 2008 season (2,440,125). 5

Hunting on Private vs. Public Lands Among those hunting during the season, 72.8% hunted on private lands and 41.9% on public lands. This continues the long term trend of more hunters hunting on private lands and fewer hunting on public lands. More than half hunted only on private lands (57.5%), just over a quarter (26.6%) only on public lands and 15.3% hunted on both private and public lands. Hunting Satisfaction in 2010 Hunting satisfaction rebounded during the hunting season. The percentage of hunters who were very satisfied or satisfied during last season stood at 53.2%. This is up from last season and the first time satisfaction has increased year to year since Still, satisfaction remains well below the level reported in Satisfaction, not surprisingly, was slightly higher among those who hunted on private lands. More than half (57.5%) of those hunting on private lands indicated that they were very satisfied or satisfied. Among those hunting on public lands, only 44.6% were very satisfied or satisfied. Satisfaction increased this year both among those hunting on private lands and those hunting on public lands. 6

Detailed Findings Hunting by Season Just over two-thirds of the hunters contacted indicate that they had gone hunting during the season. Overall the incidence of hunting is up from last year and just a little higher than in 2009 and The highest participation rate was for the General Gun Season where participation stood at 64.6%. Less than seven percent of the 2011 hunters participated in Crossbow Season. Those who hunted on private lands were more likely to hunt during the General Gun and Crossbow seasons. Those hunting on public lands were more likely to hunt during Archery season.
