1 Newsletter for the Cub Run Archers The Busybody Sept 2016 President: 18 attendees for the bow tuning class and 20 for the field dressing class. The next meeting is Oct. 2 nd at 11am. Tournament Director/Vice President: Facebook = Cubrunarchers Upcoming Events: Next Meeting October 2, 11:00 AM Cub Run Annual "Buck Buster" 3-D Trophy Shoot 18 Sept October 1 November 18, Deer Archery Season The Buckbuster Shoot is next Sunday the 18 th. Dave needs help on Saturday to put out the targets and after the shoot to tear down. He also would like someone to man the registration desk for a while so he can shoot. Range Captain: Two projects need to be done. One is to replace the orange fence and the other is to place the benches on the course. The treestands are damaged. Chris has already purchased two replacements and will installing them as soon as practicable. We will have an NFAA inspection of the course as soon as station 16 is repaired Correspondence/Secretary Report: Cub Run was well represented on the podium at the VBA State Closed. Resa Combs was State Champion in Female Compound Freestyle, Dave Dobbins was State Champion in Senior Men's Compound Fixed Sight Fingers, and Robert D'Imperio was State Champion in Male Compound Freestyle. Congratulations to each of them. Membership Concerns: We need volunteers to start a new JOAD program. Ed prefers we not have practice on Saturday morning if a new JOAD is started. Bob Keaton fell and is in Rehab. See Gilbert for directions if you would like to visit. Indoor Archery Director: The Fall Indoor Star FITA is scheduled for Nov. 5 th and 6 th. RO training will be held after the meeting in Oct. The Indoor league will most likely be changing to Wed. evenings from Jan. 9th to Mar. 10 th. We are also entertaining the idea of an Indoor 3D tournament. Social Director: Luncheon after Oct. meeting. Please bring a dish to share. 3-D Director: So far the targets on the course are holding up well. The two targets on the practice range will need to be replaced.

2 AFC Archery Director: Archery 101 course scheduled for Sept. 25 th. We need volunteer instructors. Park Qualifying Over For Another Year Dick Riemer and his park qualifying group finished up park qualifying on August 23rd. 175 shooters came to the range attempting to qualify with their compound bow or crossbow and many qualified with both. $1, was collected during the qualifying period which will go to IWLA to help with the Field Archery Budget. Thanks to all that helped in this years qualifications. Old Business: The Red Shed is falling apart. Planning is under way for replacement according to Chris Rose. Also the shed between 7 and 8 needs to be expanded. Ryan may be able to address this issue later in the winter. New Business: We need a new cardboard storage bin. Chris found one for $299 plus tax. Approved. $2000 has been given to Target Archery to carry them over til the new budget in January Terrestrial Wildlife Regulation Review & Amendment Process Public Scoping Period Please offer your ideas on changes to hunting, trapping, or other wildlife regulations that you would like to see for the seasons. We are interested in understanding the values and concerns behind your recommended changes to our hunting, trapping, and wildlife laws. This information will help the Department determine the best course of action to address potential regulation changes. Go to the following link to submit your comments and input. 3 2016 Virginia State and JOAD Outdoor Championship 93 archers registered for this VA State Outdoor Championship on August 13 and 14, Two-day shoot for 144 arrows under 100s degrees weather. Congratulations for Cub Run Archers for bringing home 5 gold medals, 1 silver medal, and 1 bronze medal. 4 New System for License Purchases (and Boat Registrations) DGIF implemented a new system for license purchases (and boat registrations) on July 1 of this year. Basically, each purchaser will be required to set up an account before purchasing a license. This is similar to purchasing something online at Amazon or some other merchant. Even if the license is purchased at a store, an account will still be created. Eventually, the system should allow DGIF to better serve our customers. However, unfamiliarity and other issues have made it difficult for some purchasers to obtain the licenses they are trying to buy. Many of the issues have been resolved as they were discovered. Some still remain unresolved. Please encourage the students in your classes to get their licenses as much in advance of the hunting seasons as possible in case they have problems. If they have plenty of time before they actually need a license, they can get help at the DGIF Customer Service line at (available Monday Friday, during business hours, except holidays). Please ask them to be patient, because there has been a very high volume of calls. Thanks for helping to spread the word. David L. Box Henrico, VA Traditional Archery Suggestion for the Newsletter from Roy Rathbun You guys know I don't shoot traditional archery, but I came across this video on YouTube, which I thought was very good. It is a good introduction to TA, and goes into interesting details about point-on, gap, string walking and fixedcrawl, stacking, etc. His method of establishing a consistent anchor was good, too. He also goes into instinctive shooting, equipment tuning, etc. The video is for both target shooters and hunters, and the man hunts with his traditional gear. Video is over two hours, but worth seeing (particularly the first 1 1/2 hours) if TA is your sport, or even if your preference is compound, like me. 5 Deer Weight Estimation (Pennsylvania System) Cub Run VBA Shoot Schedule for 2017 (correction from last month) Next years Cub Run Archers VBA schedule for 2017 has one correction. The corrected schedule is as follows:: Winter classic now 30 April 2017 (changed due to Spring 3D origally being scheduled for Easter weekend. Scheduled for club shoots had to be adjusted. 6 VBA Awards This year s State Champion tournament awards will be special acrylic awards for the VBA 75 th Anniversary. VBA awards for biggest deer, bear, turkey will be given by category. Traditional, Compound and Crossbow. This is in recognition that most of the members of VBA are hunters rather than tournament shooters (and many are both). VBA is also looking at restoring the award for biggest doe.
