1 Benton Bowmen Archery Club Inc. P.O. Box 253 Corvallis OR July 2017 Meetings Board Meeting: The next board meeting is July 18 at the range 2017/18 Executive Board President: Gordon Matzke Past President: Howard Meyer Vice President: Chris Romsos Secretary/Treasurer: Loreli Fister Outdoor Range: David Leer Indoor Range: Steve Faust Board Member1 Kathleen Brindley Board Member2: Mike Evans Board Member3 Blair Pomeroy Newsletter Editor: Allen Norby ATTENTION The range will be closed for shooting during the work party and the existing 3D courses will be dismantled as we prepare for the Hunters Summer Challenge 3D shoot. New 3D courses will be established about August 1. Participation in the work party gives members: 1. A free day of shooting at this year s 3D event, 2. A free Sloppy Joe lunch; 3. A chance to enjoy the camaraderie of fellow club members, and an opportunity to make our property more user friendly for the rest of the year. 4. Invitation to the Volunteer BBQ and Shoot. 5. This year we'll hold a raffle for one archery related prize (TBD) for those volunteers who stay through lunch! Dates to Remember July 8 - Work party to prepare the range for the 3D shoot. We will work from 8:00 to noon. Members are reminded that 4 hours work helping with the shoot preparations will earn members a free day of shooting. July 15 & 16 - Hunters Summer Challenge 3D Shoot. Volunteers are needed for everything from parking cars to running the novelty shoots. Members can both enjoy the shoot, and volunteer for a task or two. July 16, Sunday - 3:00 P.M. Our ability to quickly reestablish the courses depends on the number of members helping with the work of retrieving targets after the shoot closes at 3:00 P.M. For additional details about how you can lend a hand: For the work party call David Leer ( ) or, to help during the shoot call Chris Romsos ( ). E Board Minutes 6/20/2017 The June 2017 Benton Bowmen Executive Board meeting was held on June 20 at the Benton Bowmen range. Board members in attendance were: David Leer, Kathleen Brindley, Loreli Fister, Mike Evans, Steve Faust, Chris Romsos, Gordon Matzke and Past President Howard Meyer. Executive Board Meeting - Previous Minutes and Old Business: Minutes of the June meeting were reviewed with a correction of the check to Stan Miles for the case of Gap and Crack filler was for $43, not $46. The minutes were passed with this amendment. Treasurer s Report: The June treasurer s report is based on the May statement from the club bank account. The beginning club funds balance from the April bank statement was $ One deposit was made during the month for $ for 2-$67 memberships and 2-$73

2 memberships. Two checks cleared during the month: $275 for Benton Bowmen Scholastic 3D Archery Club 50(c)(3) application and $76 to USPS for club s PO box rental. The club funds ending balance from the February bank statement was $6, There were two deposits that was made but not yet cleared: the first for $ for 3-$51 memberships with buddy card, 1-$2 youth membership with buddy card, 1-$61 memberships and 3- $73 memberships the second deposit was $ for 2- $51 memberships with buddy card, 1-$61 membership and 1-$73 membership. There are five outstanding checks that have not cleared: $600 to Specialty Insurance for Officers and Director Insurance, $43 to Stan Miles for gap foam, $ to Kathleen Brindley for 4H ribbons, $31.48 to Gordon Matzke for spray foam, and $750 to Specialty Insurance for General Liability Insurance. There are no outstanding items needing resolution. The club s checking account balance as of this date is $5, The treasurer s report was accepted as presented. David Leer submitted a bill for upcoming 3D Hunter Challenge business card and for tractor rental during the last work party for a $615.04, Kathleen Brindley submitted a bill for 4H target faces for $59.18, and Gordon Matzke submitted a bill for $ for two benches now sitting on the practice range and food for the work party.. A motion was made and passed to pay the submitted bills. Gordon Matzke and David Leer both submitted family memberships for $63 with buddy card, Gordon s had an additional $2 donation, Chris Romsos has sold the bow and sight and brought cash of $190, and Loreli Fister brought $45 for the 9 guests she hosted at an archery gathering at the range. Indoor Range Report: No report at this time. 4H: Kathleen brought a thank you card signed by all the kids who are now gearing up for the 4H state tournament for those that qualified and for the Benton County fair. Would Benton Bowmen be willing to sponsor prizes for the fair? A motion was made and passed to do so at a budget of $200. Outdoor Range Report: Work party went well although the attendance was sparse due to the holiday weekend. The mowing mostly got done. There are now three new butts on the NFAA round and 6 new butts on the practice range. The watershed people have been out a couple of times. The false brome spraying didn t work out so well due to the weather conditions impeding the herbicide. The pipe above the road was filled in. Have a pileated woodpecker nesting on the range this year. S3DA: The club had their organizational meeting and first practice. Now have 10 kids signed up and some of the parents have volunteered for various club duties. ODF&W has provided as part of a starter kit, 3 recurve bows, 2 right and 1 left, 2 dozen arrows, an arrow curtain, gloves, arm guards, and releases. Hope to get the compound part of the kit in early July. Have the first tournament schedule for August 13 in Bend at Three Rivers Archery. There is a possibility some of the Junior Olympic Archery Development teams could participate. The S3DA state tournament will be held in Junction City but the date hasn t been determined. Youth/Family Day and Open House Will be held Sunday, June 25 th. David will put up the signs for the shoot. The 4H and S3DA kids are invited. Gordon will hold some fun shooting games and a candy bar shoot. Hunter s Challenge Mower has been reserved and a helper will to do some of the mowing. Stan and Craig are preparing targets. Advertising is mostly done (all the electronic stuff is done). David handed out shoot business cards to the membership present to hand out. David has walked the pink trail and there is a little bit of chainsaw work. Stan s trail needs the poison oak cut back. Mike will take his trail back. Still need someone to work on the green trail. If anyone would like to volunteer to take a trail over, please contact Chris Romsos. Caterer is good and has this on her calendar. Kudu Points wants to work with us as does Cabela s. John Stone is in. Chris will be working with Pacific Bow Butts to see if they can come to an agreement. Mike Evans is good for a money dot. Wayne is in for $100. So have 3 money dots dealt with. There will be a BBQ the night before for those that volunteer to help get things set New Business: Bee Request discussion regarding the request of a member to move a bee hive onto the property. The discussion included the dearth of bee forage for this time of year, the possibility of bears and the need to bear proofing of the hives, and the possible effect on the Benton Bowmen insurance. No motion was made to support having bee hives on the property. Benches Gordon purchased 2 benches that he put onto the practice range. He requested the support to get two more. A motion was made for Gordon to get two more benches. BBQ Burners on the old BBQ have rotted out. A motion was made for Gordon to replace the BBQ. Labor discussion Do we need to pay for labor? Some

3 clubs have had to move that way. Should volunteer labor contribution be part of membership? Should we have a volunteer raffle? Raffle ticket at each of the work parties to be given out at the end. Should members have to pay a premium over basic membership not to be involved in work parties? There will be a raffle for the work party after the Hunter s Challenge. Prizes for 4H at the County Fair Benton Bowmen provided last year s premium prizes for Champion and Reserve Champion at the Bento County fair for 3 age groups. Would Benton Bowmen be willing to provide similar premium prizes this year to the tune of $200 budget? Questions were asked about having the Benton Bowmen banner up. When the prizes are given it will be announced that Benton Bowmen sponsored the prizes. A motion was made and passed to provide the budget for the prizes. Eclipse 2017 It was brought forward that the club had a unique opportunity to make some money as the range is directly under the path of totality for the August 21 st total eclipse of the sun. Since there will be lots of visitors and not enough places to stay, the club could rent out camping spaces for $50/night (although if they became members that would go to a membership). It was estimated that we could get ~a dozen campers to that would provide $600. It was pointed out that it would require a full time baby sitter. Since no one on the board had time to support the activity it was decided not to pursue the opportunity that the eclipse provided. against one of the young 4H shooters and Gordon s idea to put a bit of cornstarch in some of the balloons, the effect brought cheers every time. As we near prime prep time for hunting season I d like to remind you that broadheads are to only be shot at the broadhead targets near the shed, for a multitude of safety reasons please don t shoot them on the practice range or any of the 3D or NFAA rounds. We are also entering that time of year where yellowjackets are commonly encountered on the range. If you do encounter a nest there is bee spray in the clubhouse, if you re unable to take care of the nest me and let me know where it is exactly and I ll get it taken care of. Please put July 8 on your calendar, this is the next work party at the range and is where we ll do the final prep for the summer 3D shoot as well as pull down the year-round 3D targets and haul out targets for the 3D weekend. There ll be tons to do so the more people we can get the better. If you can t make the Saturday work party let me know, I ll be out there most of the week leading up to the 3D shoot and can find something for you to help out with. Remember volunteering gets you free shooting on 3D weekend and an invite to the Volunteer BBQ and Shoot. As usual if you see anything that needs more immediate attention let me know and I ll work to get things resolved as soon as possible. Happy Shooting! David Leer Outdoor Range Captain Next meeting will at the range July 18 th at 7:00PM Loreli Fister Secretary/ Treasurer Outdoor Range Report This past month the range has seen a change for the better in our weather. I have seen turkeys and deer on almost every one of my visits and there is also a pair of pileated woodpeckers nesting somewhere on the range. If you re unfamiliar they are the largest woodpecker we have with a conspicuous red head and raucous call. June 25 we had our annual Open House and Fun day, games and prizes (candy bars) as well as free cold drinks were provided by the club and fun was had by all. Of particular note were Steve Faust shooting left handed Summer Hunter's Challenge 3-D Shoot Chris Romsos A last reminder that our annual outdoor 3-D shoot will be held on range grounds the weekend of July (Saturday and Sunday). Registration starts bright and early at 7am on Saturday. The shoot is our second and last 3-D event of the year and one of the primary fundraisers for the club. Members are encouraged to come out and shoot. If you haven't been out to the Hunter's Challenge in a few years you'll be excited to hear that we've received sponsorship, raffle items and money-dot support, from a number of local business including from club members Mike Evans (ME Electric, Dallas, OR) and Andy Evans (Kudu Point Broadheads, Philomath, OR). We will have 3 separate 3-D trails open providing over 50 targets with a money-dot or two mixed in each day. We'll also be shooting the Buffalo, pay per

4 arrow, at scheduled times over the weekend. Last year we had quite the shoot-out for a respectable 50/50 pot on Sunday afternoon. I expect the afternoon/evening Buffalo Shoot to not disappoint this year. Last year I camped out at the range on Friday and Saturday nights during the shoot. You'd think the grounds would have been busy but it was peaceful, especially Saturday night. I'll chalk that up to the relief of making through day one. Don't forget that camping is free and camping out is encouraged. I hope to see you there on the trails, in the clubhouse, or over the tailgate. And a quick call-out for help... You've already heard by now that there will be a work party on Saturday, July 8th. This is an important stage gate for the summer shoot and it requires many hands to make the work light. If you can spare a few hours for the endeavor we could use the help. I'm also looking for a few good archers to assist with other during the shoot activities. In appreciation for your contribution of 4 hours, we're offering free shooting at the shoot and we'd also like to invite all volunteers to a Friday night (July 14) pre-shoot barbecue. The idea was spawned on Friday night before the shoot last year while we enjoyed what we hope might become an annual tradition. competition and interest when my grandchildren visit. We have a big event in the month of July that provides special opportunities for families to enjoy archery when we haul out 50+ 3D targets and array them along three trails in arrangement only used once a year. This Hunters Challenge Shoot is both our major fund raiser and a wonderful chance for families to join the fun. They can help with the work party, or set up, and enjoy a BBQ the evening before the shoot. Camping at the range can add another dimension to a family s experience. I will be there myself this summer. Families are always welcome. Gordon Matzke President Letter from the President: The Benton Bowmen Club uses the phrase family Friendly Archery Club as a descriptor of itself. We see this moniker in action as parents and grandparents introduce their little charges to the sport of archery on the practice range. It s especially fun hearing cheers when someone hits a target, breaks a balloon, or spies their first 3D animal. We sponsor an open house/family day with games when families can invite their friends to experience the sport first hand. Several upgrades at the range will make the place even more family friendly. We ve added sitting benches under the shooting line shelter for people taking a rest, or just watching the activity on the shooting line. A new gas BBQ is positioned on the pad outside the clubhouse for use by members during summer months. With your own picnic supplies, it makes for a fun outing to bring the whole family, open the clubhouse, throw hamburgers on the grill and enjoy a bit of archery. If children aren t shooting, ask them to be your guide to find the next animal on the 3d trails. It always works to stimulate If you have never been to a 3D Shoot you are missing a time of great fun with your family and/or friends. It is non-competitive unless you want to challenge your shooting partner or test your long range skills on the Buffalo. You might even win some cash at a money-dot! There are lots of raffle prizes and the food is always great! Both target shooters and bowhunters enjoy this event so grab the bow and arrows and come on out
