3 Winter Tracks in McHenry County Life Under the Snow and Ice List 4 methods of heat loss experienced by animals in the winter. How does snow affect an animal s ability to conserve heat? Tracks Commonly Found at PEC Eastern Cottontail Rabbit Gray Squirrel Plants in the Winter Write a short paragraph about what happens to plants in winter. Coyote Raccoon White Tailed Deer Food Chain Game List the order of the food chain, beginning with the sun. What happens to an ecosystem if part of the food chain is removed? Deer Mouse Opossum Skunk Red Fox

4 Winter Tree Identification Coniferous Trees H. See if you can find the three different types of insect galls. The ball gall, the elliptical gall, and the bunch gall. Galls are tumor-like growths formed by the plant growing around an insect egg. The plant provides food and shelter for the developing insect egg and larva. The ball gall is formed by the larva of a small spotted winged fly that will spend the winter in the gall. The bunch gall is formed by a midge. It makes the gall look like a flower. The elliptical gall is formed by the larva of a moth. What other animals might reuse the gall for shelter? As you continue to hike the trail look for more galls along the way. Long Thin Needles in bundles 2 to 5 needles per bundle Pines Short needles Arranged singly Spruces, Firs, Hemlock Flattened Scale-like needles Cedars Deciduous Trees I. Take a look at the large brush pile. What types of animals might shelter here? What types of animals might prey on the smaller animals? J. Snow Pit Study: Snow Temperature: Bottom/leaf litter Middle Top Air Temperature : Snow Depth: Opposite Buds Alternate Buds How might the snow temperature change if the air temperature was warmer, or colder, than it is today? Why? How, and why, might your snow depth findings be different if this site were in an open field? How would this affect the insulation properties? Number of Layers: What do you observe about the appearance and hardness of varying layers? What do you observe about snow crystals in different layers? Type of Snow Crystals: Top Middle Bottom What are some things that might account for these similarities and differences?

5 Snow as Insulation Experiment: Beginning water Temperature Final water temperatures Buried Cup Covered cup Uncovered cup Was there a difference in the water temperatures? Why? How does this help animals and plants in winter? Self Guided Hike *Throughout the hike look for the following four things along the trail and mark where you see them on your map. *Small holes or raised areas in the snow next to the path; what animals made these tunnels? How does the snow help these animals? *Holes high up on the trunk or branches of a tree. What animal made this hole? What kinds of animals or birds do you think use the cavity now? *Animal trails between trees that appear to go right through the trees. What type of animal made these tracks and why do they appear to go through the trees? *Animal tracks, use the Animal Tracks Guide to help you identify them. The numbered questions below correlate to numbered flags along the trail. A. This display shows several manmade boxes for different animals to rest or nest. Now look for the bird box off to the side of the display. What type of bird box is it? B. Look at the topography of the land around you. How might animals benefit from this slope in the landscape during winter? D. Take a look at the trees in front of you. Dead trees, called snags play an important role in a healthy woodland habitat. Species of insects, birds and mammals all utilize snags for various purposes. List three ways that a snag might benefit the woodland ecosystem E. Can you find the examples of both manmade and natural animal homes in front of you? List these examples. F. Observe the area surrounding you. List three signs you see that animals have been in this area. G. Look at the fallen log. Why do you think this is an important feature in woodland winter ecology? What signs do you see that might help to confirm your answers? Prairieview Winter Tree Identification Key 1- Evergreen, needle-like leaves present go to #2 Deciduous leaves go to #4 2- Flattened scale-like needles along branch Red Cedar Needles over 1 long in bundles of 2 to 5 go to # 3 3- Needles 4 to 6 in bundles of 2 Red Pine Needles 2 to 4 in bundles of 5 White Pine 4- Leaf buds opposite go to #5 Leaf buds alternate go to #6 5- Buds red, blunt Red Maple Large brown terminal bud White Ash 6- Leaf scars large, heart shaped go to # 7 Leaf scars small, inconspicuous go to # 8 7- Leaf buds gray/fuzzy Black Walnut No apparent leaf buds Honey Locust 8- Tight cluster of red-brown terminal buds go to # 9 Terminal buds not as above go to # Terminal buds narrow, sharp Black Oak Terminal buds small, round, hairy Bur Oak 10- Buds less than 3/16, brown, pointed Black Cherry Buds greenish, brown with dark borders Red Mulberry Tree A B C D E F
