Enviro-Stories is an innovative literacy education program that inspires learning about natural resource and catchment management issues. Developed by PeeKdesigns, this program provides students with an opportunity to publish their own stories that have been written for other kids to support learning about their local area. In 2014, the Feral Animals Enviro-Stories program provided kids from five targeted schools around Australia with the opportunity to write and illustrate stories about feral animals and their impacts on both biodiversity and agriculture. This program was sponsored by the Invasive Animals CRC with support from the Queensland Murray-Darling Commitee. Invasive Animals CRC The Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) is Australia s largest integrated invasive animal research program. The Invasive Animals CRC creates new technologies and integrated strategies to reduce the impact of invasive animals on Australia s economy, environment and people. The Enviro-Stories Feral Animals initiative has been initiated and supported by Jessica Marsh, the Invasive Animals CRC s National NRM (Natural Resource Management) Facilitator. The initiative focuses on: Raising awareness in communities of the impacts pest animals have on the environment. Targeting kids in schools reaches not only the kids themselves, but their teachers, school staff, parents and other community members, Developing a refreshed primary education information pack that will value-add to the existing Invasive Animals CRC Pest Tales resource while incorporating PestSmart resources, Establishing stronger partnerships with NRM, Landcare, school communities, educators and regional groups to allow for future collaboration and information transfer to occur more effectively, and Promoting and implementing best practice management into key areas and helping to address key pest animal issues impacting on biodiversity and agricultural production.

Introduction The Indian myna (or Common myna) is a type of bird that easily adapts to many different environments. They are classed as one of the 100 most invasive species in the world. Indian myna s were first introduced to Melbourne in the mid 1800 s to reduce the insects in the market gardens. They thrived in Australia and this population grew and spread out of control right throughout eastern Australia. They were the most hated pest in Australia according to ABC Wild Watch Quest for Pests

Description Yellow, this is the colour we see first when we see an Indian myna. They have a yellow beak, yellow legs and yellow around their eyes. Their bodies are a dark chocolate brown and their heads are black. When they fly you can see a distinctive white patch under their wings and tail feathers. By Richard Taylor via Wikimedia Commons 4

Indian Myna Acridotheres tristis 5

Mistaken Identity Native birds, such as the Yellow-throated miner and Noisy miner, are often mistaken for Indian mynas. Noisy Miner Unlike the Indian myna s, which are dark chocolate brown with a black head, Noisy miner s bodies are a lighter grey colour with olive tinged wings, white bellies and a black mask around their eyes. 6

Yellow-throated miner The Yellow-throated miner is very similar to the Noisy miner being grey and lighter in colour than the Indian myna. However, you can tell Yellow-throated miner s apart from noisy miner s as they have a grey crown, white rump and a yellow forehead and throat. 7

Food Peck, peck, peck! This is the sound of Indian myna birds eating anything and everything. This makes the Indian myna bird an omnivore. They can eat such a variety of things that very little food is left for our beautiful native birds. 8

Habitat Get Out! squawked the Indian myna as it kicked another native bird s egg out of the galah nest to make room for it s own blue eggs. Building nests only happens as a last resort as they are a very opportunistic bird. The Indian myna s prefer to live in any area that there is easy access to food. They love to live near people because they are scavengers and people leave lots of food lying around for them. People leave food scraps and other rubbish around as well as a tasty array of pet, stock and poultry food. 9

Distribution Are you wondering where these revolting creatures live? Scientists have discovered that Indian myna s have and are continuing to spread right throughout eastern Australia. These birds are originally native to Asia and were introduced to eradicate bugs. Now they are like flying cane toads, taking over from our native wildlife. 10

11

Behaviour Hop, bounce, hop, bounce, hop goes the Indian myna as it scavenges food and aggressively chases off our vulnerable native birds. It gets help from other Indian Myna birds to make the life of our native birds difficult. 12

How to help Here are some things you can do to rid your town of Indian myna birds: Clean food scraps left outdoors. Seal roof cavities. Join a community-trapping program. Raise awareness. Place lids on grain bins and pet food containers. Plant native trees and shrubs Observe and record sightings on 13

References and Further information FeralScan is a website that everyday people can use to map sightings of feral animals. This can help researchers get vital population and distribution information so they can come up with ways to get rid of the feral animals. If you see an Indian myna you can report it on this website. The PestSmart Toolkit provides information and guidance on best-practice invasive animal management on several key vertebrate pest species. 14

Canberra Indian Myna Action Group Inc. is a community based program to help fight against the Indian myna invasion in Canberra. It is a great example of how the community can work together to try and get rid of this invasive feral animal. The Indian Myna Control Project is a project in the mid-north coast of NSW that is funded by the NSW Environmental Trust. This provides lots of helpful information about the Indian myna problem. 15

Glossary Aggressive - likely to attack. Community - living in one area. Eradicate - to destroy or get rid of completely Indian myna - a very invasive feral bird causing problems throughout eastern Australia. Introduced species - an animal or plant that has been brought into a place where it does not naturally occur. Native - an indigenous species that occurs naturally in an area. Omnivore - feeds on all kinds of foods, both plant and animal. Roof cavities - space under the roof. Scavenge - search for useful things among the rubbish. Vulnerable - something that is exposed to dangers that could cause it harm. 16
