SPORTSMEN S NOTES The Official Publication of the Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen s Club February 2010 CANOE TRAILS A TRIP TO CANADA Teamwork and Self-Confidence Emphasized DMSC SHORT SHOTS The February meeting will feature Ace Firearms president George Romanoff providing information he gathered at the Las Vegas SHOT Show regarding the latest in firearms and ammunition. It is with regret we report the recent passing of some of our members. We remember Senior Bob Ramey, Past President Ed McFeeley, and Life Member Norman Schohn. The prayers and condolences of the DMSC are with their families. Joe Martin and Marc Burnes answer questions for some potential voyageurs. Teamwork and confidence are just two of the attributes gained by participating in a Canoe Trails excursion. That s part of the message Joe Martin and Marc Burnes made in their presentation at the last meeting. Canoe Trails is a co-ed organization for young adults ages that provides an opportunity for young people to explore the Canadian wilderness. Participants embark on a weeklong journey of hiking and canoeing through forests and crystal clear lakes. (Interested adults are also welcome.) Participants get to learn camping and outdoor skills, make new friends, challenge themselves and, most importantly, see the natural world which is rapidly shrinking due to human settlement. Dr. Evertt Partridge began Canoe Trails, loosely associated with the Boy Scouts of America for insurance purposes, in 1947, who took his Boy Scouts on Canadian canoe trips. In 1965, Mr. George Wildman began the Co-Ed Canoe Trails program to enable girls to CANOE Continued on page 2 There had been consideration given to cancelling this months CMP match because of the difficulty in wading through deep snow to get to the target line and then placing the holders. Thanks to Team Tupta it now looks like the match will be a go. See the complete story on Page 5, Shooting Opportunities. The Washington County Conservation District will conduct the local 2010 Envirothon on club grounds on two dates--march 25th for the study session and May 6 for the competition. Don t forget the Allegheny County Sportsmen of the Year Banquet on March 20, where our newsletter editor, Lou Romito, will be honored as the DMSC representative. Details of the banquet are the last page of this newsletter. Congratulations are in order to Ron Watton and Chuck Augenstein who secured $8200 in grants from the Friends of NRA. Ron received $4000 for black powder operations and $1200 for range safety officer training. Chuck Augenstein received a $3000 grant for junior rifle program ammunition. It s no wonder we continue to urge members to support FNRA activities the funds come back to us many times over. SHORT SHOTS Continued on page 6

2 CANOE Continued from page 1 have the opportunity to have this same enjoyment. Today, both the Boys and the Co-Ed programs run simultaneously. The home base for the programs is in Beaver, Pennsylvania with a present Canadian base in Kipawa, Quebec, Canada. Canoe Trails provides all the equipment except boots, which better be good to handle paddling, hiking, and portaging 150 miles over 10 days. The trip is rough camping--make your own food, no phones or GPS. Youngsters lead, the adults monitor, the experienced voyageurs tech the new. To prepare for the adventure the candidates spend 2 to3 weekends at local Lake Tionesta and attend 5 evening training sessions. The group is made up of 10 to 28 people, and participants must be at least 14 before the trip. Besides good boots, other costs could include gas, personal equipment, warm wool clothing, passports, and the like. You can see a schedule of the timeframe on the next-to-last last page of this newsletter and check the Canoe Trail Forum at the organization s website- -for more detailed information. There s still time to join up. This may be the opportunity of a lifetime DUES NEWS It s time to renew your dues. Basic dues are the same. Active $70.00 per year Senior (65 years old, 10 years consecutive membership) $25.00 per year Intermediate (18-21) $25.00 per year Junior (12-17) $ 5.00 per year Do not include the one-time $10.00 charge for the gate card. Make checks payable to the Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen s Club and mail them to: DMSC P.O.Box Pittsburgh, PA REMINDERS: You will not be getting back a separate membership card or year sticker. Your gate card is now your membership identification card. Your cancelled check or your hand receipt for cash will be your proof of payment. Include your address on your check so we can update our database for notifying you on newsletter postings and special alerts. If you need a club affiliation identification card for purchasing Civilian Marksmanship Program material from Camp Perry, come to a membership meeting to pick one up from Ell Vines. The Plowing Tuptas--Stephen, Shawn, and Father John Membership Chair, Dan Campbell notes that several times over the past few months some members apparently believe that they can submit one check to cover the dues themselves plus a son/daughter in the belief that the son/daughter automatically becomes a Junior member. While we absolute encourage members to enroll their sons and daughters in the club, the children still have to go through the membership process. Your understanding and cooperation in this matter is appreciated.

A CMP Note From Bruce I arrived at the club today (Valentine Day) to find three dedicated men working very hard to ensure that we are able to have our scheduled CMP February rifle match. Please join me in a tip of the hat for their effort, a nod of appreciation for the forethought and willingness they have shown, and a scratch of the head for 'what in heavens name were they thinking'. But they did it!!!! They are the Tuptas--Father John with sons Shawn and Stephen. They hogged out marching lanes and found the target line, they cleared the firing line and even moved mounds so there is some chance we might find our brass. I personally was flabergasted. So, if conditions are anywhere within the realm of reasonable, please join us for the Feb, 21st CMP match. We're gonna have a good time!! Questions - call Bruce, Executive Range Officer, at

6 SHORT SHOTS Continued from page 1 Congratulations also to Gary Scherer who attained CMP Master Instructor Certification, and to Gerry O Hare and Mario Fatigati who applied for and were approved by the Board for life membership in the Club. Thanks to Chuck Augenstein for securing new target backers for the indoor range and to George Taylor for fabricating new target hangers. The set up looks so pretty you almost don t want to shoot and mess up the range. Found in clubhouse: one small ladies bag with personal items. Please identify the bag and its contents to claim. Contact ERO Bruce Ungar at Dan Campbell is now a reporter for examiner.com, an online site that provides a local slant on information for a number of topics. Dan s focus is on gun rights. In this role, he does not represent the DMSC but provides his personal perspective. The prohibition on full metal jacket ammo on the indoor range is still prohibited, but copper washed coated ammunition is okay. The general rule is if you can cut the bullet with a knife you can use it on the range. You can direct any questions to the range master of the shoot. The contractor has completed the physical installation of the sewer line on our property. The remaining work consists of cleanup, road repairs, topsoil leveling, grass seed application, and other cosmetic work that will be done in the spring. At the last board meeting, Ell Vines came up with the idea of establishing a library in the clubhouse and the board enthusiastically agreed. We haven t solidified lending procedures yet, but we are in the process of getting bookcases and Ell is making a donation of a number of his excellent firearms related books. We will provide more details as the process develops. Lebanon (5-4), The article also noted--amy Smith of Dormont-Mt. Lebanon was high lady with a 295. After putting together back-to-back wins to start the new year the team put up a good fight but once again lost to Frazier- Simplex, to fall to 5-4 and tie for 3rd place with Green Valley. Dean noted-- Interestingly enough, Frazier came loaded for bear with 8 shoot-aheads from their visiting college kids and juniors, but only 1 made the cut. Rick Janoski, after having not shot since 12/16, shot s and, unfortunately, one 7. For only having seven people out for this match we shot remarkably well... and this is the first time this season that everyone shot 290 or higher. The team bounced back and improved its record to 6-4 with a win at the Irwin Sportsmen s Club. Dean led the way with a 298, with Matt Piatt and Amy putting up 295s, followed by Miles Ford, 292, and Fritz Hempelmann, 289. Congratulations went to Miles Ford and Tom Benedict who both shot well-- Miles making the cut and Tom shooting his first 100 kneeling in a match. The weather provided a break for the next match. Poor road conditions prevented Green Valley from getting to our club, so the match was postponed. But there s no rest for the weary. DMSC has upcoming matches against Murrysville, Allegheny, and Clymer before butting up against Frazier once again. The next few weeks promise their share of drama.

9 OFFICIAL DORMONT-MT. LEBANON SPORTSMEN S CLUB APPARREL. CALIFORNIA POLICE CHIEFS CALLS FOR MICROSTAMPING STUDY Firearms microstamping is the process by which firearms manufacturers would have to micro laser-engrave a gun's make, model and serial number on two distinct parts of each gun, including the firing pin, so that in theory the information would be imprinted on the cartridge casing when the pistol is fired. D B A C Last year we discussed microstamping legislation at one of our meetings and noted the bills under consideration in many states were written by the very company that developed the process and was using the fear factor to further its financial agenda. We also suggested to not waste our resources fighting against legislation that was not going anywhere. Well, it finally looks like someone else caught on and, surprisingly, it s the California Police Chiefs Association (CPCA). In 2007, CPCA supported legislation to require firearms microstamping in California. Legislation mandating microstamping in California was signed into law in 2007 by Gov. Schwarzenegger and was slated to take effect January 1, this year. E A. Short sleeve pocket tee shirt, $10 B. Short sleeve polo w/pocket. Available in Hunter Green and Beige. $35. C. Long sleeve denim shirt, $30 D. Club cap, camo, adjustable $13 E. Club pin, with push-through clasp, 1 1/8 inch diameter. For your lapel or cap or for pin trading at major competitions. $5 F. Club patch, iron-on/sew-own, 5 inches in diameter. $5. TO ORDER see Chuck Augenstein at the next meeting or call him at F The National Shooting Sports Foundation reports that, in a recent letter to CA Attorney General Ed Brown, CPCA expressed concern over the "hasty implementation" of firearms microstamping in California and called for further in-depth study of the technology before it is implemented by law in California. Since the technology remains encumbered by patents, it cannot be certified by the CA DOJ, and therefore has not been implemented. CPCA said "We support further research of microstamping in light of the new information that has surfaced since California passage of the legislation. Publicly available, peer-reviewed studies conducted by independent research organizations conclude that the technology does not function reliably and that criminals can remove the markings easily in mere seconds." When the time comes, let s make sure the PA Legislature pays attention to that last sentence and doesn t waste time going down the same dead end street.

10 FIRST CMP SHOOT OF THE 2010 SEASON - JANUARY 17 Because of some participants concerns about potential misuse of the group photo, the shooters are not individually identified. The bottom photos are not in black and white. That s just how bleakly the day started. John Tupta reported the following: For the month of January, the first match of the 2010 shooting season saw a very comfortable 38 degrees but with rain and a snow covered ground. Eighteen shooters were on the line (this may be a January record ) and a special thanks to Jim Madar for bringing the Model 1903 and thus giving the entire line an extra ten seconds in the rapid fire phases. Top score went to Allan Jaworski with a 563-6x; Matt Gillenberger was a close second with 561-8x. Top M1 shooter was Dave Burd with a 486-3x and Bruce Long garnished the M1A honors with a 531-3x. As always, the CMP monthly shoot is very enjoyable and all are welcome. Complete scores are on the next page.

12 NOTES FROM THE FIELD FISH AND BOAT COMMISSION Dave Miko, Chief of the PGC Fish Management Division, is suggesting eliminating the early season trout-stocked-waters program. Some of the waters involved would move to regular opening day trout program The rest could be moved into the year-round trout fishing program which, considering the number of streams involved, would give anglers almost a 1000 days more fishing. Plus the stocking could then be done more efficiently with fewer trips and a bigger trout load--although the total numbers would be the same. The downside, according to the Commissioners, is that if the trout are stocked in early March, they might not be around on opening day because of catch-and-release mortality, illegal harvest, and the such. That would get the fisherman mad, and the Commissioners would feel the wrath. They agree something needs to be done to increase efficiency and stretch the PFBC dollars, but this approach isn t it. GAME COMMISSION For the fourth consecutive year, the PGC is hitting the road to bring six deer management open houses to communities throughout the Commonwealth beginning on Feb. 20 and ending on April 10. Open houses are used by the agency as an interactive public outreach tool The effort emphasizes bringing this powerful communications and educational tool to residents as a means to further the general public s understanding of deer and deer management. Open houses are held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on a Saturday to maximize the opportunity for those interested in attending, and are in different locations than the three previous rounds to afford residents in other areas of the state the opportunity to attend. One would think open houses would be held near major population centers to get the largest and most diverse audiences. However, hunters in Allegheny, Butler, Washington, Westmoreland, Green and Fayette will have to travel a bit to get to an open house. Oh well, here s the schedule: February 20, Coudersport, Pa February 27, Hawley, PA March 13, Pittsfield, PA March 20, Johnstown, PA March 27, Shippensburg, PA April 10, Frackville, PA PGC News Release # is titled GAME COMMISSIONERS PROPOSE SEA- SONS AND BAG LIMITS and starts off with the following information:. The PGC Board gave preliminary approval to hunting and trapping seasons and bag limits for , including broad changes to deer, bear, turkey and small game seasons. The public may offer comments on all proposed seasons and bag limits, as well as other Board actions, between now and the Board s next meeting, April 19-20, at which time the Board will finalize seasons and bag limits for Also, the Board will take action on setting antlerless deer license allocations for the 22 WMUs at its April meeting. Deer harvest estimates for the seasons will be available in mid-march. Then it adds Following are several articles on meeting highlights. It goes on to provide ten segments covering changes in everything from bag limits to expanded elk hunting to waterfowl and trapping. The information is worth the time it takes to read and is available at

13 MEETING NOTES FROM THE ALLEGHENY COUNTY SPORTSMEN S LEAGUE AND THE WASHINGTON COUNTY SPORTSMEN S AND CONSERVATION LEAGUE (Delegates Mike Yanchak and Bob Kirsopp) ALLEGHENY COUNTY The regular monthly meeting at the Courthouse was cancelled because the Gold Room was not available. However, the officers and directors will meet at the Monroeville Convention Center on Saturday the 20th of February at 2 p.m. WASHINGTON COUNTY The following input was gathered from the League newsletter. Topics discussed at the February 4 meeting included: A vote was taken on a PFSC resolution submitted by the Lehigh County Fish and Game Protective Assn. asking the PGC to issue doe licenses by the point of sale on a first come first served basis without a lottery system. The vote was unanimous in favor of the resolution. Sean Sauserman, PFBC WCO reported that ice fishing at Cross Creek had been pretty good until the recent rain. Canonsburg Lake will be stocked Feb. 17th. Dan Sitler, PGC WCO, reported on some of the season changes proposed at the last Commissioner s meeting. Four new WMUs will be added to the split five-day antlered deer season and seven-day concurrent season. An extension of the bear season has been proposed. The bobcat season for hunting and trapping was extended to 3 weeks, and a 6 day fisher season has been proposed. A sponsorship to be a member of the Governor s Youth Council for Hunting and Fishing. The sponsorship would cover the cost of attending meetings that will be held around the state. After a talk on what the Council is about and its purpose, the League to donate a sponsorship of $ The League made a $260 sponsorship for the upcoming Pheasants Forever banquet on Feb. 27th.. The Wounded Warriors have been hearing some bad remarks about their organization. No one present had heard anything derogatory about the WW and it was agreed that anyone hearing such rumors should set the record straight immediately. Thanks go to all those members who stayed Friday and came back on Sunday to care of the Sport Show during the snow storm. Next year s show will be February 3 thru 6. When we have too much white space we try to fill it with helpful reminders. Here s one. Get your second tag spring turkey tag now, before you forget. Spring Gobbler Season: May 1-31 Only one turkey may be taken in each season, except for those hunters who possess a second license for the spring season, in which case a second bearded bird can be taken.
