1 Protect, Conserve, Inspire REPORT December and January 2016 Firearms recovery and arrest of 4 suspects in e Transmara 5 January 2016 Weaer and Rainfall: The rains have continued roughout is period but are suspected to stop in February. General In December and January we lost 9 elephants and made 3 ivory arrests. This is an increase in elephant killings compared to e last reporting period. The traditional poaching hotspots have changed and we are seeing more killings in e community conservancies. This includes a spate of killings in e Ollaro Conservancy area in Siana. 4 elephants were poached for eir ivory in is at e end of January and 1 elephant was killed in e Ol Choro Conservancy mid January. MEP is going rough e process of professionalizing e organization and special consultant Brian Kearney-Grieve has been driving is process. We would like to ank e ESCAPE Foundation for supporting is hugely beneficial exercise in addition to e core budget. WWF Kenya and KWS have collared 10 elephants in e Mara. They deployed e collars in areas where our current data has gaps. We hope to develop our relationship wi WWF so at we can access eir collars on e same system. Partnership Development MEP SIT REP December and January

2 We have requested an additional 8 KWS rangers to deploy wi MEP. So far we have received 4 additional rangers which has been a huge help to improve e law enforcement in e aitong hillsrekero, Oldonyo Erinka and a portion Olkinyei. We hope to increase e operational area to e norern border of Naboisho Conservancy and Olkinyei Conservancy wi e 4 additional rangers. rd On e 27 to e 30 we conducted a 3 drone training wi partner RESOLVE in e Grumeti National Reserve in e Serengeti Tanzania. We trained 27 rangers from TANAPA, WD and e WMAs. The training was attended by KWS officials who have reported to e service on e same. We hope to have a drone demo in Kenya in e next few mons where we invite officials to inspect from e KCAA, Ministry of Defense, and e KWS. Photo of e rangers at e recent drone training in Tanzania. The CEO attended e Paways conference at e Mt Kenya Safari Club wi funding partner PREPARED from USAID. At e conference we were able to present wi Big Life Foundation and Honey Guide Foundation about HWC toolkits and mitigating HWC. We were also exposed to a variety of projects working in conservation projects in Kenya, in different part of Africa and across e globe. The event was successful to bo bringing conservationists and projects togeer but also to share a ideas and learn from oers. Fundraising: Board member Trey Fehsenfeld has raised 50,000USD for MEP in We hosted e CEO of Tusk Trust on January 17 and we hope at eir funds will be made available to purchase e digital radio network. We will need to leverage funds for is and plan to raise e balance ough STE from e Wildlife Conservation Network. Security: On e 5 of January we arrest 4 suspects wi e KWS near Lolgorian wi 2 AK 47 assault rifles. This gang had been terrorizing community members and killed 5 over e course of last year including attacking e police station in Lolgorian. The community came out in numbers at e police station in MEP SIT REP December and January

3 Lolgorian town when e arrest was made to support MEP, KWS and e Police. 2 of e gang members were released on 500,000KSh (5,000USD) bond each. MEP has been given access to a supercub aircraft (previously reported) by e ESCAPE Foundation for aerial support-up to 20hrs per mon. We have been deploying e supercub wi eier a MEP warden or KWS warden several times a week. The flights have been to establish where elephant herd are when ground rangers loose em. This has enabled us to deploy our ground forces more effectively. HEC In December we erected 3 more chili fences in e Transmara at e request of farmers in e area. Staff: The second ranger of e quarter was awarded to Jackson Maitai. The CEO went on annual leave from e 13 to e 27 of December. The last staff meeting was held on e 4 of January at e MEP HQ. The next staff meeting is planned for e 15 of February at e MEP HQ. This year we will need to get updated certificates of good conduct. We have purchased deworming medicine for all e rangers in January.
