Skeet Season is Here! It is March and the 2010 skeet season is upon us. We have had a cold Winter and we may have some cold days left. There is always that Easter cold snap. It is time to clean those tubes, take inventory of your shells and reloads. In this issue, we have some excellent tips from L. P. Giambrone to help you with your practice regimen and prepare for the coming season, If you are having a rough start this year, perhaps you should attend one of L P s seminars. It is also time to start planning your shoot itinerary for this season. We are here to help you with that part. Each issue of the Red Chute Gazette has the skeet schedule for Zone 6 in the back. Now that shooters are discovering what we are about, more and more clubs are taking advantage of our Red Chute Gazette Deal to promote their shoots. We want to take this opportunity to thank our readers and the clubs that have participated in our modest effort to promote skeet in Zone 6. The RedChuteGazette.com website now has a page devoted to flyers on upcoming shoots. This is your clubs opportunity to really reach out to shooters across Zone 6. We hope to help you boost participation in our sport so it will grow membership and be around for us to enjoy for many more years. We are continuing to seek out individuals who will serve as reporters for their respective clubs, who will send us articles and write-ups about their shoots and programs to promote skeet. If you know someone at your club who has been a mentor or inspiration to other shooters, write an article about them and send it to us. Don t forget to send us pictures of those hat shoot events. We love to share success stories. This issue has our second installment on quail hunting. This time we spend some time at Thornhill s Shooting Preserve in Jayess, Mississippi. We hope you enjoy reading about the fun. This month s Dining on The Road feature will share with you one of my favorite places to eat in Mississippi. You will definitely want to try the Dinner Bell in McComb, if you pass that way. I want to say thanks to the good folks at Coast Rifle and Pistol Club in Biloxi for showing us their brand of Southern Hospitality. Read about it in this issue. We hope to see you on the skeet fields. Good Shooting! Doug Frey Page 2 RED CHUTE GAZETTE

VOLUME 2 ISSUE 3 Dining on The Road Page 4 In this issue, we share with you details about my recent trip to South Mississippi to hunt quail with friends, Dana Vutera, W. C. Milton, Daryle Gauthier and Randy Brownlee. Our hunting destination was Thornhill s Shooting Preserve which is near the quaint little town of McComb, Mississippi. McComb is just off I-55 down close to the Louisiana border. After spending the morning hunting, we had worked up an appetite. As part of this excursion, we had planned for that with a visit to The Dinner Bell. This restaurant is the place to go for home style country food. Meals are eaten at special Lazy Susan tables. The food is served in bowls placed on the inner table which turns, allowing the guests easy access to all the dishes. The menu is different each day, although there is a schedule on their website, so you can know what will be served before you get there. That allows you to pick a day for your favorite entrees which might include baked chicken, smoked sausage, meatloaf, pork chops, or catfish. Every day is fried chicken day and Sunday lunch will be either roast beef, ham or turkey. Your entrees may be accompanied by yams, turnips, green beans, lima beans, field peas, rice and gravy, dumplings, coleslaw, cabbage or one of The Dinner Bell specialties, fried eggplant. On the day of our visit, we had pork chops covered in gravy and banana pudding. We also had rutabagas which is not something you see much. These were very tasty with a sweet turnip flavor. Yes, there was corn bread too. There are special rules on how you eat at a Lazy Susan table. If you do not follow them, lunch would be a train wreck. Fortunately the learning curve is short and the staff will keep the table supplied with the more than you can eat revolving buffet. Yes, it is an all you can eat revolving buffet! Eating at The Dinner Bell is a very social affair. You will be dinning at the same table with total strangers. Well, at least that is how it starts. Of course, you can t eat with strangers in the South. Everyone will introduce themselves and you will enjoy this culinary feast with new friends. You will be sharing in the common bond of The Dinner Bell lunch table. I have eaten here several times in the last year or so and you do meet people from all walks of life. Most have been there before or were brought there by a friend. Fried eggplant is a favorite with patrons.

Dining on The Road If you didn t know it was there you might not take exit 15A on I-55 to go to South McComb. The restaurant is not right on the Interstate, you will have to look for it. You can get directions from their website or ask a local. As a youngster growing up in Amite, Louisiana, I remember coming to The Dinner Bell for Sunday lunch. The restaurant started over 53 years ago with the Lazy Susan round table tradition that was common with boarding houses that needed to serve large numbers of people. The restaurant (which was never a boardinghouse) moved from its original location on Louisiana Avenue to it current location in I remember eating in the original location when I was about 7 years old. Ownership has changed several times over the years and is now run by Andre Davis and his wife Ashley who took over the reins from Andre s father Buddy Davis. Andre and his family live on the second floor of the old home that houses the restaurant. Much of the staff at The Dinner Bell have been working there for their entire lives. With experience like that in the kitchen, you can expect the food to be great. As you might expect, the guest book at The Dinner Bell includes the names of the famous and infamous, friends and neighbors and literally generations of patrons who came as children, returned as adults and then brought their children. They have had visitors from every State in the Union, Canada, Mexico and many other countries. Lunch is served every day except Mondays from 11 A.M. to 2 P.M. Dinner for private groups of 36 or more can be enjoyed by reservation only. The cost is $11 per person during the week and a little more on weekends. I can promise you that the hungry hunters in our party got their money s worth this day. Good food, good company and great memories to share. You will want to check this spot out if you are near McComb at lunch time. I suggest you plan on it. You can find them at 225 5th Avenue, McComb, MS 39648, Phone: , If you go, please tell Andre that you red about it in the Red Chute Gazette. Safe Travels and Good Eats, Doug Frey W. C. 10 Practice Part 2 Schedule By: Paul L.P. Giambrone, III What makes us all better shooters? Coach Bob Knight once said that everyone thinks that you need a will to win inside of you to be successful. That may be true, but there is something that is more important than the will to win Bob Knight said everyone has the will to win, but to be successful and actually win; you have to have the will to learn. That makes all of the sense in the world! Think about that just for a second. All of us have the will to win that s why we practice and work the countless hours on this sport to become better shooters, but all of that is no good if we do not have the will to learn. Practice is where it all starts and the basics of practice all start with the baseline incoming shots (Low 1 and High 7) and Low 7. Low 7 is where it all starts because it does a number of different things that a good bit of us do not recognize. I know you are sitting there saying, Seriously?!?! Low 7!?!?!? What the heck is this guy talking about? Let me explain just how important this target actually is. This target allows you to get comfortable with your gun and establishes your point of impact (P.O.I). You should be able to smoke this target with no strain and no issue at all. If not, your P.O.I. may be off and this target will be the first to tell you. If you are consistently breaking tops, bottoms, etc. then your gun may need to be adjusted. This shot requires no thinking whatsoever; it is a pure instinct shot. You should be able to see the details of the target when it flies out of the house and you smoke it. You should be able to see the AA White Flyer spinning on the top just kidding! But in all seriousness, you should be able to see the multiple rims that the target has with no problem. If not, you may need to check your prescription or the color of lenses you are wearing or maybe just put a little more effort in to the shot. Once you are comfortable in smoking Low 7 (and I don t mean smoking it 2 or 3 times out of 10 I m talking 10 out of 10), then shoot some incomers on stations 1 & 7. Once again, you should be able to turn these targets inside out with no problem and leave a nice cloud of black smoke in the air. These shots are the basic shots on a skeet field and, quite frankly, basic shots of shooting a shotgun. Since these targets are close and require little to no lead, you should be able to smoke these targets. This establishes your P.O.I. and gets your brain familiar with your gun and where it is shooting. Once you develop these simple shots, you will gain more and more confidence from seeing the smoke. If you can hit these targets consistently and hard, you can hit any target on the skeet field because the gun will be shooting where you are looking. Page 10 RED CHUTE GAZETTE

VOLUME 2 ISSUE 3 Page 11 Practice Part 2 Schedule (Continued) On a side note for newer shooters, it is very important to master these shots before moving on to anything else. Once you are comfortable with these shots and are consistently turning them inside out, start to incorporate the other incomers on the field and baseline shots (Low 2 & 3, High 5 & 6, along with High 1 and station 8). I like to take small steps and incorporate Low 2 & High 6 first before moving to Low 3 & High 5. Then proceed to High 1 and both shots on station 8 (new shooters, save station 8 for a later time). This brings me to what my exact practice schedule is year in and year out. When I first knock the dust off and pull my gun out of the closet, I get back to my home club and start working with these basic shots. Try to think of a child. Children don t go from crawling to running marathons in a matter of days or weeks, but years. Now I am not saying it will take years to develop all of the skeet shots, but it does take time and it doesn t happen over-night (we want it all and we want it right away). A lot of people want to hurry up and shoot full rounds or even skip the easy shots. I m sorry to say, but that is not the way to become a better shooter or master the sport. Do you think Tiger Woods skipped practice on putting the two-foot putts? I guarantee you that there was no short cuts taken when he prepares himself for a golf season, so why would we? I work on the baseline targets (stations 1, 7 & 8) for about 2 weeks. I shoot singles only during this time and usually spend about a box on each station. During this time, I am getting conditioned to the gun and working on basic mechanics, hold points, look points, etc. You are also conditioning your eyes to get used to the speeds of the targets. I also take the time to pattern my gun to make sure it is shooting where I am looking. Yes, even after 17 years of shooting, I still pattern my gun at the beginning of the year and I recommend it for every shooter. After these 2 weeks have passed and I am completely comfortable with these shots, I expand my practice to incorporate all of the incomers. So I am now shooting all shots on stations 1, 7 & 8, Low 2 &3, High 5 &6. The next 3-4 weeks of practice are very crucial and are the most important for you as a skeet shooter. During these 3-4 weeks, we need to master all, not some, but ALL of these shots. I know these are the easy shots in skeet, but let s do the math real quick on these so-called easy shots. These shots account for 16/17

Practice Part 2-Schedule (Continued) shots each round! The theory here is to develop and master these shots to be way ahead of the curve. Could you imagine starting your round with 16 or 17 April 9-11, 2010 shots in the bag? Just think about your scores last year Calvert City, KY for a moment. Look how many targets you could have picked up throughout the year had you given these To register or for information contact: easy targets the attention they deserve? These basic shots make or break your round, your hundred or Chris Garland even your weekend. It s not the High 2 s or the Low s that cost us so much anyone can miss an ltcricket@yahoo.com outgoing target on any given day. That is why I spend the first few weeks of my practice schedule working just on these shots. Here is a schedule on how to shoot a round just on these shots: All targets on stations 1 & 7 including doubles 3 shots at Low 2 & Low 3 3 shots at High 5 & 6 2 shots at High 8, 2 shots at Low 8 Take your option when you miss or shoot 3 Low 8 s if you run the round. Once you are 110% comfortable with all of these shots, then we can now move on to the outgoing shots. Once you get to this point, it is always a good idea to warm up with 2 rounds of just the incomers. This gets us stretched and warmed up, but it also makes you remember how to shoot these targets as well. At this time, I will then work on High 2, High 3, High 4, Low 4, Low 5, and Low 6. Shooting 6 single shots at each for your round and take your option where you miss. Once again, once you are completely comfortable with all of these shots, then you can start shooting regular rounds of skeet. Remember to take each station one target at a time and never any more than that and to give each and every target the same amount of attention. After all, a Low 8 counts just as much as a High 4. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me via at info@gsclinics.com. Also, please visit for more information. Tip of the month: During all of this training time, experiment with different hold points, look points and foot position to find out which combination works best for you. Paul L.P. 17 Recipe of the Month Page 17 Stuffed Quail Ingredients: 1/2 onion sliced and rough chopped celery tops chopped zest of 1 lemon 8 cloves garlic 1/2 t sage 1/2 t thyme 1/2 t nutmeg bacon strips 4 quail First I fixed stuffed quail for supper and they were very good! My wife loved them. I just thought them to be a bit dry. Mix all ingredients except garlic. Then stuff the cavities with ethe mixture and 2 whole cloves of garlic. Then wrap them up with two strips bacon. Bake them at 400 until thermometer reads 180 in the breast. Very tasty!! This recipe came from our friend Randy Brownlee. If you have a recipe that you want to share, send it to us at publisher@redchutegazette.com. We would are still interested in a good recipe for quail and gravy. Red Chute Gazette

Readers Respond Nice reading, could you please put me on the distribution for future issues. BTW, was just in your area, heck of a Mardi Gras parade you folks put on! LT Hey Doug, Just got around to reading the Feb Gazette. I was wondering why I hadn't received it when I remembered about the new format. Anyway, I hope you guy's had a good time on the quail hunt in Mississippi. Would have loved to go but work was in the way. Maybe we could schedule something one time when I'm on my days off and I could probably drag a couple guy's with me. Next time you are floating around Cajun country let me know and I will join you for lunch. Dupuy's has always been a good place to eat and I'm only 20 miles from Abbeville. That's not far to go for some good food! Hope all is well with you and your family. Toby is currently training at Camp Shelby and should be returning home on the 28th of February. He is going back to Shelby March 4th and from there he is going to Iraq. I'll let everyone know when he has left and when I get his mailing address I will pass it on to you to put in the Gazette. I've had request from many shooters and their families for me to give them the address so they can send care packages. Have I told you how much I love these people?! Hope to see you guy's soon. Practice, practice, practice!!! Sincerely, Gordon [Publishers note: Remember to pray for our military. They are all volunteers and may be the only thing standing between you and an evil enemy which has a mind to do us all in.] Page 18 RED CHUTE GAZETTE

VOLUME 2 ISSUE 3 Hello Everyone, Readers Respond (Continued) Page 19 Many of you have pre-registered [for the John Smith Memorial see page 29], so I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for doing so and thereby helping us with early planning. Most of us know that Pajaro has a great club house and a terrific background. This has not stopped the club from making improvements to enhance your shooting experience. This week, a painting contractor began the process of cleaning, caulking, and painting the skeet houses, fences, storage facilities, and the club house. Also, all 6 skeet machines have been cleaned and some parts replaced in order to ensure great targets for all of us. And, as always, the best referees in the business We will have at least 18 door prize items, lots of popcorn and ice cream treats, the bracket game for a Ruger 10-22, free lunches on Saturday and Sunday, and free dinners on Friday and Saturday. We have a few slots still open so let us know as soon as possible to ensure your participation. Thanks to all, Jerry Doug, I saw the "Brass Wizard II" hull retriever from Uniquetek advertised in your newsletter and knew that I had to have it! I ordered it online and couldn't wait to get it and try it out. It works great! No more bending over to pick up spent hulls. Thanks, Doug for having great products advertised in your magazine. This is the second item that I have purchased from one of your advertisers. Looking forward to your next edition. -Dennis Burnham In the last issue, you published my to you in which I set forth two opinions: 1) Your new website is excellent and a great way to disseminate the RCG; and 2) navigating through past and present issues on the new site is so easy that even Roddy could do it. Unfortunately, time has proven that I was correct on only one of my two opinions, i.e., the former. Keep up the good work. Darrell

The Sweetheart Shoot Coast Rifle & Pistol Club Biloxi, Mississippi On March 30, Debbie and I had the pleasure of visiting the Coast Rifle & Pistol Club which is near Biloxi, Mississippi. We came for the Sweetheart Shoot at the invitation of our friend Randy Brownlee. Steve Carter and his bride Jan, also came down from Bossier City. It rained on us all the way. I believe we brought the rain with us. I am an optimist when it comes to weather forecasts and skeet. I have been told by the weather experts that an X% chance of rain means it may rain somewhere in the forecast area. Weather patterns are always on the move and those who are patient will see it pass. And pass it did, as sky began to clear before the shooting started. We did have a wind forecast of 15 to 25 knots, which is not unusual for coastal regions. The wind was a factor, but everyone had to deal with it. All in all, we got pretty good targets. Although one machine threw more double birds (two at a time) than I have ever seen before. This was an interesting phenomenon and didn t really hurt anyone s scores. The members of this club are working hard to build a very nice shooting facility. The club has 3 skeet fields (recently built), two trap fields, rifle and pistol ranges. This shoot was scheduled to be 50 targets in each gun, including doubles. We met some really nice people. In the picture above, Julie Russell poses with her Krieghoff which has recently had restocked by the folks at Wenig Custom Gunstocks in Lincoln, MO. They did a beautiful job with some gorgeous wood for a very reasonable price. More importantly to Julie was that the gun now fits her much better than it ever did and she reports that her shooting has improved dramatically since the work was done. 21 VOLUME 2 ISSUE 3 Page 21 The Sweetheart Shoot (Continued) Steve Carter and I had the pleasure of shooting with Henry Kennedy, Glen Dawson and Ken Nail. Our squad mates were very nice folks as were everyone one else we met. For lunch we had gumbo, jambalaya and red beans and rice. Oh yes, let s not forget that banana pudding! The food was great and we felt right at home. This club has a membership that runs from 900 to 1,200 people. Many don t shoot competitive skeet (yet), but participate in other venues at this multifaceted club. If you get a chance to shoot at Coast Rifle & Pistol Club this year, jump at it. You will be glad you did. The winners are on the next page. Good Shooting! Hello Shooters!! Thanks to all that attended the Sweetheart Shoot and to those that helped to make it a success! The scores are posted on Check out how you did!! A huge Special Thanks to the following: John and Julie Russell, Jon Lewis, Jean Junterseher, John Stubbindick, Diane and Tommy Tyrone, Marylee Walker, Tom Rushing, Carla and Brenna McNamee, Glen Dawson and Guy Seanger. The food, Refs, house loading and Clean Restrooms are thanks to these folks. If I missed you --Thank you too!! Randy Brownlee Steve Carter crushing targets in a shoot-off. Red Chute Gazette

Quail Hunting at Page 23 In our February issue, I shared with our readers the events of our father and son quail hunt at Wild Wings Sporting Club in Downsville, Louisiana in November of In January of 2010, I had the chance to hunt quail again with some good friends, Dana Vutera, W. C. Milton, and Daryle Gauthier of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Randy Brownlee from Gulfport, Mississippi. This time, we had the pleasure of hunting at Thornhill s Shooting Preserve in Jayess, Mississippi. Thornhill s Shooting Preserve was opened in 1979 when Conn Thornhill decided to meet the need for quail hunting alternatives due to the decline in quail populations in southern Mississippi. Conn had built a reputation as a trainer of quality bird dogs for hunters across the region. When the dog s owners came to pick up their dogs, Conn would release some pen raised quail for the dogs to hunt and demonstrate their new skills. As the client base grew, so did the need to release quail. It was a natural evolution of the business to begin offering guided quail hunts. Now, Conn s son (Gary) Wayne The Bird Man Thornhill has taken over as the main guide. Wayne and the Preserve s other guides, take hunters through one of three courses on the 100 acres populated with broom sage, Blackjack oaks and various pines. When hunting with Wayne, you always know you are going to get plenty of shooting opportunities. On this hunt, we asked for 20 birds per hunter. Wayne put half of the birds out in two different locations. We split up into two parties, with a guide and dogs for each. Red Chute Gazette

VOLUME 2 ISSUE 3 Quail Hunting at Thornhill s (Cont.) Randy Brownlee, W. C. Milton and I went with Wayne Thornhill and Dana Vutera and Daryle Gauthier, went with the other guide. The hunting grounds were right across the street from Conn Thornhill s home and base of operations. We didn t have to go far to get right into the action. There is nothing like hunting quail over well trained bird dogs. Wayne and Conn have done a great job with theirs. This setup really works well. Randy Brownlee takes a bead on a flushing quail When hunting pen raised birds, the quality of the birds will vary from preserve to preserve. Quail raised around people will be poor flyers. It is important that the suppliers keep their birds in pens situated with minimal contact to people. The birds we hunted this trip were excellent flyers. Wayne Thornhill uses several bird dogs during the hunt. In addition to the bird dogs, he also uses a retriever to flush the coveys and to retrieve the birds to hand. His bird dogs will also retrieve and are very competitive a b o u t performing that service. Dogs have personalities like people. Page 24

Quail Hunting at Thornhill s (Cont.) Page 25 One of our wounded birds landed in the pond. It floated there like a duck for quite some time. However, unlike a duck, wet quail cannot fly. Wayne s dogs went in after this bird. Once in the water, they pointed the same as they would on dry land. These dogs held this point for over five minutes while I was trying to get close enough to take these pictures without getting wet. Having dogs that will hold a point is critical to the success of a good hunt. Wayne and Conn have trained these dogs well. In the picture to the left, Daryle Gauthier takes aim at a bird that was attempting an escape. That one went in the bag with the rest.

Quail Hunting at Thornhill s (Cont.) In the picture to the left, Wayne Thornhill, Daryle Gauthier and Randy Brownlee pose with some of our bounty. Conn Thornhill made several trips out to the hunters on his four wheeler to collect the game so that he could get a head-start on the cleaning process. The birds were cleaned and divvied up in plastic bags for each hunter to take home and enjoy. After hunting the first batch, we took a break while Wayne put out the rest of the birds. We then swapped a few hunters with the other party and went back after the second batch. Wayne keeps a counter in his pocket so that he knows exactly how many birds are left. He is very good at keeping track of which way the birds go on a flush. That is very helpful, as some always seem to escape on the initial flush. Page 26 We got all the birds Wayne released for us this day.

Quail Hunting at Thornhill s (Cont.) Page 27 Thornhill s offers two hunts a day on Monday through Saturday from October to mid April. You can reserve a half or a full day hunt. The minimum is a 20 bird 1/2 day hunt. They can handle parties of up to 12 people. Non-residents can obtain a special hunting preserve permit on site for $15. That permit is good for a year. Reservations may be made up to one year in advance. Our timing on this trip was perfect, since I had purchased a hunting permit the previous year which was still good for this hunt. Recently, Thornhill s launched a website which will give you all of the pertinent information. Check it out at: Or call Wayne from 5-9:30 PM at: (601) (cell) (601) (home) If you go, please give Wayne and Conn my regards and please be sure to mention that you read about them in the Red Chute Gazette. The mission of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote interest and participation in registered skeet. Sporting Clays and Trap are not subjects we focus on. We recognize that many gun clubs offer events other than skeet. We are happy to provide commercial advertising space for clubs that wish to promote other shooting related events. We are happy to offer a special package deal to clubs that support our magazine. If your club buys an ad in the Red Chute Gazette for a full year (1/4 page or larger), we will not only include your ad in 12 issues, we will include any shoot flyers (please limit flyers to two pages) for sporting clays, trap or other events your club promotes in those issues at no additional charge Advertisement Rates for Gun Clubs Promoting Shotgun Sports Quarter Page 1/3 Page Half Page Full Page Annual Rate $ $ $ $ Single Issue Rate $37.50 $50.00 $75.00 $ These rates have been substantially discounted for gun clubs. Other commercial advertisers should request a rate quote. To take advantage of this service contact Doug Frey by phone at (318) or via at dougfrey@bellsouth.net All Rights Reserved Douglas F.
