1 The Naperville Trapshooter The Official Newsletter of the Naperville Sportsman s Club - January 2018 The Fred Section Members Meeting and Board Meeting We will have a member s meeting followed by a board meeting at the clubhouse on Tuesday, January 9th. The meeting starts at 7:30; doors open at 7:00. All members are invited and urged to attend both meetings. Time to renew your membership for 2018 It s time to renew your membership for The renewal for regular members is $55. ($25 for associate members) Please pay by check to the PO box (mail to Naperville Sportsman s Club, PO Box 27, Naperville, IL 60566) or by cash or check at the counter during shooting hours or at the monthly meeting. If you pay by cash, you must be given and retain a receipt. If you would like any family member badges, they are available for a reduced price of $1 each if ordered with your renewal. (vs. $2 if ordered separately) To order them, include the extra $1 each, say what you want, and for each person, include the name, call name, and relationship to you....fred Turek Secretary President s Message Annual Meeting of the Members The Annual Meeting of the Members was held on December 12th. The election was really all our business that night. I was elected President, Mike Moore for Vice President, Fred Turek for Secretary and Tom Coleman for Treasurer. Steve Pfister and Nenad Trichkovski were elected to the two Directors positions. Ralph Nelson was chosen for the Dennis Haffner Service Award. Scott Calhoun was the Election Judge. After the meetings we went to Your Neighbors for food and drink. Upcoming Events NSC 2018 Dues: Due now! (PO Box or counter) NSC 2018 Doubles League: January 21 st NSC 2018 Irish Open: March 18 th NSC 2018 Singles League: March 22 nd Gun Auction Fred is still working on the Silent Gun Auction for the guns the Club does not need anymore. Keep an eye on your for the information about the auction. We will use our system to collect the bids. New Member Orientation The next three new member orientations (informal history and workings of the club) will be held at the club on Sunday January 14 th, Sunday February 11 th and Sunday March 11 th at 10:00 AM. Please RSVP to myself at The Range Volunteer clinic will begin at 11:00 AM on those days. Everyone interested in learning how the machines work should attend. Jim Monk President

2 Training Committee Report: I have just completed the new required on-line courses for the Boy Scouts of America Shotgun Merit Badge Counselors. It basically covers the internal structures that make up the Boy Scouts foundation and education requirements for all Merit Badge Counselors. They do a very thorough job of developing self-esteem, leadership, and responsibility in the scout programs. Merit Badge Counselors are a very important tool in that development. I share this office with a very few other members in our club who work as Shotgun Merit Badge Counselors in our area. Using our Trap Fundamental Classes as a starting reference, I can "Piggy- Back," part of the required training and shooting opportunities a scout needs to acquire his merit badge. The Counselors look for safe gun handling, reference to the transportation, storage, cleaning, and operating the shotguns. The scout must also successfully complete two live fire exercises to meet their requirements. They really do work for them. Our area BSA officers will assign scouts to Merit Badge Counselors as they develop in age, desire, and show responsibility to acquire their badges. We can look forward to these candidates using our facilities in the coming year. As I have mentioned in past articles, we have a very active training program at our club and can always use more help. If you are interested in Trap Classes, BSA Merit Badge Counselors, Hunter Safety or becoming a NRA Certified Shotgun Instructor, or just helping with our live fire exercises, let a board member or myself know. I promise you will find it rewarding and fun. Shooting posts in Olympic Trap are in a straight line. A screw-in choke will pattern differently from one shotgun to another. The exit speed of the bird in International Trap is 62 mph (100 km/h): American Trap is 40 mph (64 km/h) The first successful semi-automatic shotgun was the Browning A-5, designed by John Browning. The shotgun nicknamed The Platonic Ideal is manufactured by James Purdy & Sons. The shotgun nicknamed The Desert Island Gun is the Remington 870. The shotgun nicknamed The Aristocrat is the Browning Superposed Model. The shotgun nicknamed Soft Shooter is the Remington Model Side-by-side shotguns are designed and built around box-lock and side-lock mechanisms. The first lever action shotgun was the Winchester M1887 designed by John Browning. Three major golf winners who liked to shoot shotguns at clay targets and hunt upland birds are Bobby Jones, Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus. The first U. S. President to be an avid shotgunner was Theodore Roosevelt. He loved his A. H. Fox shotgun. The last great John Browning shotgun was the Browning Superposed (B-25). It was designed before he died and became the most popular double barrel in the United States.
