The team average of was an historic best, going back to the season, as was the high team score of That s quite an impressive array of awards! Although Frazier-Simplex came in 2nd with a 15-3 record, it had a average, and a high score of So, in good fun, Frazier didn t take long to throw down the gauntlet and vow to bring the trophy back to its rightful home next season. But DMSC has its own plans for next season. With most of the team returning, hopes are high for a repeat. Any new shooters who want to get in on the action can contact any team member for more information. Young shooters are also encouraged to join the junior team to build a solid foundation for the future. Six of this year s champions came from our junior program Dean, Jason, Matt, Rick, Fritz and Dan. Dean Trew hoists the team trophy. 5 DMSC HUNTER-TRAPPER EDUCATION PROGRAM PARTICIPATION COMES TO AN END With long-time stalwart George Dietz unable to continue as program manager for the hunter safety program, and no one else available to pick up the administrative portion of the activity, the Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen s Club will longer be conducting education sessions at the club. The program has been undergoing subtle changes over the past few years. For example, when it came to familiarizing license applicants with the operation of a firearm, the students use to fire live.22 rifles in a heavily supervised environment. Then the use of live rifles was prohibited. Subsequently, the presence of unloaded real firearms was banned. Finally, handling was limited to wooden PGC dummy firearms. 5 DMSC SHORT SHOTS The next meeting will have Dave McGrath as the speaker. A soon-to-be Camp Perry certified CMP instructor, he will give tips on how to improve your CMP and High Power accuracy. A big thank you to Gary Scherer who provided about 20 new rifle target frames and who also supplied the junior rifle team with a generous amount of safety equipment. The road to the club just got a little smoother after being shaved with this road grader from Tom Robinson and rolled by Al Ducouer. We ll miss the potholes not. Now the program content has been revised, and a provision made for adult applicants (age 17 and over) to take the majority of the lecture and testing portion of the program an estimated 8-10 hours through independent study on-line. Then they would attend a monitored 2-3 hours final test segment. A look at the PGC The rocketing cost of ammunition has website caused a price increase for the CMP program. A round with targets only is $6.00. A index.htm shows that firearms familiarity is developed with instructions such as click on round with targets and 64 rounds of ammunition is $25. Also, the fee for the Saturday Sil- the image below to launch a Flash animation where you may interactively learn the parts of a houette Program has gone up a dollar to allow the target setters a small wage increase bolt action rifle, and a typical learning statement advises the choke of a shotgun acts like for their stellar efforts. A practice round is $4 the nozzle of a garden hose. and a competition round is $7. Sorry. The course is designed to meet the standards for hunter training established by the International Hunter Education Association (IHEA). At some future point, all training may be on-line. For now, those applicants between 11 and 17 can find additional sources for on-site hunter safety education programs on the PGC web site. They are listed by month by county. Go to click on Hunter Education Classes, then click on the Calendar. At the last meeting, member Judy Brown, Second Amendment Sisters Coordinator for PA, thanked the members for their support in her successful run for Alternate Delegate, Republican National Convention from District 18. Judy also joined the Allegheny County Sportsmen s League as a Member at Large and was sworn in May 8, SHORT SHOTS continued on Page 6

7 7 BOW BRIEFS An every-now-and-then feature about the Archery Program The gravel pad for the mainframe target is laid, giving solid footing from the 30 and 40 yard markers. The 20 yard marker is a small steel plate at ground level in the grassy area so the mower doesn t get damaged. Besides some paper turkey targets at the mainframe and on the ridge, archers will find a solid foam 3-D tom turkey hiding in the deep grass to the left of the mainframe. Thanks to Krazy Konstruction Kompany Krewmembers Ted Hildabrand, Bob Kirsopp, Ray Nist, and Lou Romito for the labor. Watching Bob deftly maneuver the tractor to pull out stumps, grade the plot, and set the railroad ties was amazing. The mainframe mowing will be done shortly. 8 8 TURKEYS AND CHICKENS AND PIGS, OH MY! The Silhouette Program Is Underway Program manager George Taylor was very pleased with the way the outdoor silhouette program kicked off its season. By official count, 92 guns registered for the event. There were enough volunteers that firing line control and target setting by using walkie-talkies, increasing the safety of the range. Volunteers also provided administrative support in logging in the shooters and monitoring the cash flow. With the number of participants, flight assignment and finance control are important elements. The beauty of this shoot is the instant gratification one gets with the resounding ping of a solid hit that puts down the target. Above: Shooters wait their turn at the course. Below: An unheralded but integral part of the program is the target setters who zip out to the rails to put the silhouettes back in place between shooting segments. Above: Al Marsico is delighted to be competing in the first formal event since his commemorative plaque was hung on the adjacent rifle range. Below: A lone rifleman eyes the 200 yard silhouettes.

9 9 MEETING NOTES FROM THE ALLEGHENY COUNTY SPORTSMEN S LEAGUE AND THE WASHINGTON COUNTY SPORTSMEN S AND CONSERVATION LEAGUE (Delegates Mike Yanchak and Bob Kirsopp) DMAP applications are available until July 1 and are available on the Commission s website at The state s one-day youth spring gobbler season is April 19; the general season is April 26 to May 26 and includes Monday of the Memorial Day holiday to afford those hunters who have off work. In both seasons, shooting hours are one-half hour before sunrise until noon. Mike Christeson (ACSL) reported Philadelphia Council and Mayor passed and signed into law Gun Control Bills on April 10: 1. limit handgun purchases to one a month 2. require reporting within 24 hours lost or stolen firearms 3. forbid individuals under protection from abuse orders from possessing guns if ordered by the court 4. allow removal (by a judge) of firearms from persons posing a risk of personal injury to themselves or others 5. outlaw the possession and sale of certain assault weapons Since the PA Constitution precludes local governments from enacting gun laws, these bills, in effect, are illegal. Nelson Lund, Patrick Henry Professor of Constitutional Law and the Second Amendment at George Mason university, will speak at the Rivers Club on June 10 and 17. The ACSL Youth Day will be held on July 19 at Pitcairn Monroeville Sportsmen s Club. 40 applications have been completed and returned as of April 10. (Editor s Note: See the Youth Day flyer on the last page of this newsletter.) Because of the recent heavy rains we need to help eliminate breeding grounds for insects. Dump it if it has water in it; Drain it if it can be drained; Treat it if it has standing water. Standing water becomes mosquito breeding ground after just a few days. TRES BANDIDOS If it s the fifth Wednesday of the month, it s time for Tres Bandidos and the ghosts and goblins. In this fast paced event, teams of three compete to knock down their targets the fastest. The first team to do so wins the reward for that particular round. Then the teams are split into other three person sets, and the process begins again. The steel targets are based on a Halloween theme don t ask and are rather large and very visible. But it s not as easy as it looks to pound the targets with a.22 pistol at 100 yards. You probably won t be too successful with just a red dot scope. Some of the scopes in use would have been at home on a sniper rifle. Amigos, the next match is July 30. Verte alli. See you there

10 10 PENNSYLVANIA GAME COMMISSION NEWS The Pennsylvania Game Commission has started accepting applications from those interested in entering the public drawing for one of 45 elk hunting licenses (17 antlered and 28 antlerless) to be made available for the Nov. 3-8 elk season. The public drawing is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 20, and will be conducted as part of the 2008 Elk Expo. To better serve its customers, the Game Commission has enabled hunters to complete and submit applications online through the agency's website ( until August 29. In an April 29 news release the PGC noted its support of Rep David Levdansky s funding proposal. Deputy Executive Director Michael W. Schmit offered testimony on behalf of the agency before the House Finance Committee in support House Bill 1676 to provide for an alternative funding stream for agency operations. Levdansky (D-Allegheny) sponsored HB 1676, and is a frequent sponsor of gun control legislation. It was not readily apparent from the news release why the support was given now, when the Bill was referred to the Committee on Finance on July In an effort to save money, increase the competitive bidding process and meet the public's expectations for open government, the Pennsylvania Game Commission recently launched its online "PGC Business Center" to serve as a one-stop shop for companies looking to do business with the state wildlife agency. To access the PGC Business Center, visit the Game Commission's website at and click on "Business Center" in the left-hand column of the homepage. Information about various Game Commission procurement and service contracts can be viewed, from the purchase of herbicide used on State Game Lands to road-killed deer removal from local roads. Companies also may view timber, oil and gas bid packages being offered by the Game Commission. PENNSYLVANIA FISH AND BOAT COMMISSION NEWS FISH FOR FREE DAYS for 2008 are Saturday, May 24 & Sunday, June 1. Fish for Free Days allow anyone (resident or nonresident) to legally fish for Pennsylvania s most popular fish without a fishing license. Each year the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission's Executive Director designates 2 Fish for Free Days. No fishing license is required to fish on Pennsylvania's waterways on these days. All other fishing regulations still apply. At its April 22 spring quarterly meeting, the Commission approved the Boating Infrastructure Grant (BIG), administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, in the amount of $1.35 million to the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh. The grant is for construction of a 525-foot tie-up facility for transient boaters with access to the South Shore Riverfront Park and the South Side Works. The May/June 2008 of the Pennsylvania Angler and Boater Magazine has an interesting and informative article on the Three Rivers Water Trail, with a map on the various accesses. The article is one of the few that are totally viewable on the magazines website The article reminds readers that each Three Rivers Water Trail landing contains directional red paddle signs that orient paddlers from both land and water. Amenities such as ramps, interpretive signs and canoe/kayak racks are also at each location, and users should stow your craft properly before setting out on foot to explore nearby historic sites, parks, restaurants and cultural attractions. BASS SEASONS Lakes: June 14 through Oct. 31 Rivers/Streams: June 14 through Sept. 30.
