All revenues go to the Association for distribution. Terry Outdoor Show Update The Outdoor Show is on track to be another exciting event on June 3rd and 4th hosted by the CDFGPA. Please keep an eye out for the volunteer sign up sheets, your help will make the Show better! We will be proudly showcasing our wonderful venues Archery, Black Powder, Cowboy Action and Shotgun. Lots of fun-filled family activities for kids, including the ever popular bird houses, spin casting, pellet rifle, paint ball and the fish pond. In addition, we are supporting local non-profit organizations and businesses. See the retriever dogs and one and two handed fly casting demonstrations, among others. This year we are fortunate to be sponsored again by 97.3 the Eagle, Quality Foods and John's Your Independent Grocer. When you're shopping please thank them for their support! Don't forget to pre-book your helicopter ride; provided by 49 North Helicopters, starting from $49/person. Phone and tell them it's for the Outdoor Show. Cheers, Lyndsey

Shotgun News - Jim Leggett CDF&G Club Championships were held on April 16th at the Shotgun Venue, with the HOA trophy going to Jim Barry, who also won Trap with a 25 straight. Skeet winner, also with a 25 straight was Alan Parkinson, while Peter Ronning won 5 Stand with 24. In the Ladies category, Lisa Cunningham won Skeet (22) and 5 Stand (20), and Chris Annand won Trap (20). Youth winner was Chris Watters. All trophies were once again donated by Buck and Irene Harley. Irene also donated a Russell belt knife as top prize to any volunteer or participant in the event. This year s winner was Jenna Leggett (abo ve). The shotgun venue youth program is active and growing. Chris Watters and Jenna Leggett have been actively competing in ISA events at various clubs, and were recently joined by Will Gee to shoot at the Nanaimo ISA shoot. All three have brought home pins. The wheelchair accessible trap and skeet field is now in full use. We re happy to report that the first 25 straight in skeet was shot from a wheelchair on that field last weekend. The next major event at the shotgun venue will be the Roger McNeil 4x100 NSSA Skeet shoot May There is a full slate of shoots during the summer, including the BC Provincial Skeet Championships June 9-11, the monthly Sporting Clays, and regular trap and skeet. Check the calendar on the website for details and come out to join the fun. Instruction can be arranged. Deserving Members Corner By Gail Eggiman Public Relations Thumbs up this quarter goes to Joanne Assen, voted in as Secretary for Courtenay and District Fish & Game Protective Association in December She has served as a Director in previous years and as Archery Chair. She is still involved with Archery assisting with various archery events. The club is sorely lacking in a replacement Chair for our kitchen which was responsible for (with volunteer help) providing meals for our large competitive and community events; but Joanne corralled some help and organized, cooked and fed the competitors breakfast, lunch and dinner over the weekend in the recent 3D Archery Shoot. She is also ready and willing to help when she can at all other Association functions despite still holding down a job and living up Island! We need more volunteers like her!

Cowboy Report May 2017 Spring is upon us, and summer can't be far behind. The Valley Regulators are gearing up for another busy travel and shooting season. There are matches to be attended in Victoria, Mission, Kamloops, Alberta and Saskatchewan, as well as our local annual match over the August long week and our regular monthly fun matches. That means we all need to load a lot of ammo, dust off our fancy costume duds (assuming we can still fit into them), and clean lots of guns. Yahoo! We have hosted the SASS National Championships several times over the past few years, and we always have a cook-your-own AAA rib-eye steak night for all the visiting shooters and families. This year we thought we'd show the rest of the folks from Courtenay Fish and Game what it's all about. So on the last Saturday night in May there's gonna be a lot of cowboy cookin', cowboy music, dancin', and even a little shootin' with cowboy guns. Hope we see you all there. Tickets are limited to the first 100, available at the office and at the shotgun clubhouse. See those two pretty ladies in the picture above? Meet Dallas Dancer and Grace Under Fire, both from the lower mainland area, and they competed at the SASS Canadian National Championship held here in Courtenay last Labour Day weekend. We had a beautiful view down the lake to the glacier during our Saturday night costume banquet. This picture was chosen as the cover photo for the March issue of our international monthly magazine, The Cowboy Chronicle. If you are interested in more information about Cowboy Action shooting, check out our website: valleyregulators.com. Our fun matches are the third Saturday of every month and the shootin' starts at 10:00 am. Spectators are welcome!

Archery News Indoor League to continue The Winter Indoor League was well received, so we will be having a Spring Indoor League. The league will start April 24 for 10 weeks. Doors usually open around 6:30 pm for practise with the league starting at 7 pm to 8. If you'd like to participate come to the clubhouse April 24 at 6:30 pm. Costs will likely be $20. Next Event Our next event is the North American Long Bow Safari, July 1 and 2. Spring Shoot Thank you Our D Spring Shoot has wrapped up and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who made this event a success. I ll even thank Mother Nature for not sheeting rain down on us all weekend! We had 124 shooters over two days enjoying an interesting and new course. My personal thanks to Brian Bloomfield for organizing the event again. He makes it look easy. Brian, Joanne, Letitia and I want to say THANK YOU to all the volunteers that helped with trail design and setup, GPSing, donation sourcing and gathering, main clubhouse setup, meal planning and delivering, registration desk.. A very long list with some large time commitments and some not as large but all important and integral to the success of our shoot. Thank you. We cannot hold these shoots without your help. 6 Club Improvements Courtenay Fish and Game has accomplished some major infrastructure advances this year with the help of two government grants. Earlier in the year, we purchased a 5 passenger Kubota for the use of volunteers through the New Horizons Grant for Seniors. The balance of the $25,000 grant was used in May to build a wheelchair accessible trap and skeet field at the shotgun venue. Over 15 volunteers spent March 13 & 14 creating a state-of-the-art facility for the club. The $100,000 Canada 150 Grant allowed us to renovate our office facility in the main hall to an office/ interpretive center. It is now a roomy, efficient, easily accessible and comfortable work space. We also have finished installing a septic system at the archery venue. Still in progress, due to an extension of the grant, is the addition to the archery building. This will house flush toilets and coin operated showers which will be available to campers and participants at any club event. Very soon the archery road will be paved and the upper range road extended. The chlorination of the archery/campground water system will also proceed as soon as we get permits from VIHA. The rebuild of the burned campground structure has now been finished, and the building will be put into use as a campground office and club workshop, which will house club tools, equipment, and supplies. On April 29th the Finance Committee hosted a workshop for Directors and Chairs to review the draft Strategic Plans of 2010 and These plans were never brought to the membership as finished products. However, they provided an excellent framework for the group to determine that the club has actually accomplished most of the recommendations from those plans. New ideas will be incorporated into the revision which will then go to the Board, and the membership by September. Shirl Leggett, Treasurer

Ranges Terry O Toole Check out current range closures on the bulletin boards in the 100/25 yd range building, the monthly listing closures, and, or course, the club WEB site. Even when the 100/25 yd ranges are booked by law enforcement agencies, they are usually finished by 5:00 pm, or earlier, and members can use the ranges until 8:00 pm. Have been receiving a lot of questions about Authorizations to Transport (ATT's), so here are the requirements: 1. You must have a valid Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) for restricted or prohibited firearms, 2. you must own a restricted or prohibited firearm, 3. the reason for owning firearms is for target shooting 4. and you must maintain an authorized gun club membership. 5. When transporting the firearm must be unloaded, rendered inoperable by a secure locking device and locked in a secure container that can not be easily broken open or into. Ammunition can be transported with the firearm, but it is recommended that ammunition be transported in a separate secure container. Bill C-42, the Fair Firearms Act, made most ATT's a condition of your firearms licence. That is, if you have a PAL for restricted or prohibited (R/P) firearms, you automatically have an ATT. Bill C-42 along with the above conditions allow you to : transport R/P firearms to an approved range; transport R/P firearms for verification; transport R/P firearms for repair to a business authorized to repair or appraise firearms; transport R/P firearms to and from a gun show: transport R/P firarms to a port of exit in order to take them from Canada and from a port of entry: and transport of a newly acquired R/P firearm from the place of acquisition to the licence holders dwelling house or other place authorized by the Chief Firearms Officer (CFO). This ATT does not allow: transport of R/P firearms to another persons dwelling (even if that person has a valid PAL); transport of R/P firearms not registered to your licence. There are other instances where a short term ATT or long term storage ATT may be required. Further info can be obtained by the Canadian Firearms Center ( ) or at
