We alo know and undertand that you mut account for all activitie done in the claroom. While each title i aligned to all of the tate tandard (both the text and the For Creative Mind), it would be nearly impoible to align all of thee activitie to each tate tandard at each grade level. However, we do include ome of the general wording of the CORE language art and math tandard, a well a ome of the very general cience or ocial tudie tandard. Before reading the book, ak the children what they know about the ubject. A lit of uggeted quetion i below. The children hould write down their anwer (or adult for them if the children are not yet writing) on the chart found in Appendix A, index card, or pot-it note. Their anwer hould be placed on a before reading panel. If doing thi a a group, you could ue a bulletin board or even a blackboard. If doing thi with individual children, you can ue a plain manila folder with the front cover the before reading panel. Either way, you will need two more panel or ection one called correct anwer and the other look for correct anwer. before reading correct anwer look for correct anwer Do the children have any more quetion about the ubject? If o, write them down to ee if they are anwered in the book. After reading the book, go back to the quetion and anwer and determine whether the children anwer were correct or not. If the anwer wa correct, move that card to the correct anwer panel. If the anwer wa incorrect, go back to the book to find the correct information. If the children have more quetion that were not anwered, they hould look them up. When an anwer ha been found and corrected, the card can be moved to the correct anwer panel. Quetion: what cla of animal i a dog? mammal, like u. Anwer: A dog i a Quetion: what cla of animal i a parrot? i a bird becaue it ha feather. Chooe two word from each category and write a entence for each word. Write a tory that ue at leat ten vocabulary word from the word ort. Have children create entence uing their vocabulary word. 15 Claifying Animal Objective: Claify organim according to one elected feature, uch a body covering, and identify other imilaritie hared by organim within each group formed. Decribe everal external feature and behavior of animal that can be ued to claify them (e.g., ize, color, hape of body part). Identify obervable imilaritie and difference (e.g., number of leg, body covering, ize) between/ among different group of animal. Jut a we ort candy, cientit ort all living thing into group to help u undertand and connect how thing relate to each other. Scientit ak quetion to help them ort or claify animal. Baed on the anwer to the quetion, cientit can ort the living organim. The firt ort i into a Kingdom. There are five commonly accepted Kingdom: Monera, Protita, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia. All of the living thing in thi book belong to Animalia or the Animal Kingdom. The next big ort i into a Phylum. One of the firt quetion that a cientit will ak i whether the animal ha (or had at ome point in it life) a backbone. If the anwer i ye, the animal i a vertebrate. If the anwer i no, the animal i an invertebrate. Each Phylum i broken down into Clae, like mammal, bird, reptile, fih, amphibian, inect, or gatropod (nail). Then each cla can be broken down even further into order, familie, genu and pecie, getting more pecific. The cientific name i generally in Latin or Greek and i the living thing genu and pecie. People all over the world ue the cientific name, no matter what language they peak. Mot living organim alo have a common name that we ue in our own language. Some quetion cientit ak: Doe it have a backbone? What type of kin covering doe it have? Doe it have a keleton? If o, i it inide or outide of the body? How many body part doe the animal have? Doe it get oxygen from the air through lung or from the water through gill? Are the babie born alive or do they hatch from egg? Doe the baby drink milk from it mother? I it warm-blooded or cold-blooded? Uing what you know, and information and picture in the book, ee how many Animal Chart quare you can fill in for each animal. Arbordale Publihing 15

20 Animal Sorting Card Objective: Claify organim according to one elected feature, uch a body covering, and identify other imilaritie hared by organim within each group formed. Decribe everal external feature and behavior of animal that can be ued to claify them (e.g., ize, color, hape of body part). Identify obervable imilaritie and difference (e.g., number of leg, body covering, ize) between/ among different group of animal. Animal Card Game: Sorting: Depending on the age of the children, have them ort card by: where the animal live (habitat) tail, no tail number of leg (if the animal have leg) color or kin pattern how they move (walk, wim, jump, or fly) animal cla type of kin covering (hair/fur, feather, cale, moit kin) what they eat (plant eater/herbivore, meat eater/carnivore, both/ omnivore) Memory Card Game: Make two copie of each of the orting card page and cut out the card. 23 Math Card Objective Core Mathematic Claify object into given categorie; count the number of object in each category and ort the categorie by count. (up to 10) Solve addition and ubtraction word problem, and add and ubtract within 10, e.g., by uing object or drawing to repreent the problem. Ue number, up to 10, to place object in order, uch a firt, econd, and third, and to name them For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that make 10 when added to the given number, e.g., by uing object or drawing, and record the anwer with a drawing or equation. Math Card Game (Make four copie of the math card to play thee game): Ten Make Friend Memory Game i a combination of a memory and adding game. Play like the memory game, above. If the animal number add up to 10, the child keep the pair and take another turn. If they do not add up to ten, the player hould turn the card back over and it i another player turn.
