2 OUR KENYA CONSERVATION SAFARI This amazing 8-night journey takes in some of the best sites in Kenya. Included are experiences in four principal wildlife areas of the country. It includes the Samburu National Reserve, the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Lake Naivasha National Park, and the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. The safari is highlighted by visits to a few conservation projects in the Samburu/Ol Pejeta area. In addition to the possibility of seeing the Big Five, you ll see a wide variety of other wildlife, including an amazing array of birds! Accommodations are at first-class lodges and hotels, and all meals are included while on safari. OUR ESCORT - SHANNON MORARITY Please join me on this fabulous exploration of Kenya where you ll have the opportunity to see the Big Five -- African lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, African leopard, rhinoceros and more. You ll also learn firsthand about some of the Zoo s conservation partners who work so diligently to protect and save a variety of Kenya s wildlife. I am very excited to have the opportunity to travel with wildlife enthusiasts who share a love for animals. My enthusiasm, passion, appreciation, and commitment to caring for animals will definitely shine through during our adventure, and I look forward to sharing it with you. My career at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium began in 2004 working in the Congo Region with apes, birds, monkeys, leopards, and hoofstock. Then in 2013, I joined the Australia and the Islands team as Assistant Curator overseeing the daily husbandry, training, and overall health of the animals. In 2016 I moved to Heart of Africa as Assistant Curator where I have broadened my experience working with an extensive variety of large hoofstock and carnivores. An additional role that I enjoy is being part of the Columbus Zoo s hand rearing team. I ve had the privilege of helping raise infant gorillas, mandrills, tigers, cheetahs, various bird species, zebra, Thomson gazelles, and the latest -- Nora the polar bear cub. Seeing so many of these species in their natural habitat certainly makes this a trip of a lifetime. Come on along as we take to the savanna in Kenya! Shannon Morarity Assistant Curator, Heart of Africa June 5 - Tuesday Depart Columbus Depart Columbus this afternoon on a Delta flight, destined for a U.S. gateway, where we connect with a flight bound for Amsterdam. June 6 - Wednesday Arrive Nairobi Morning arrival in Amsterdam, where we connect with a KLM flight destined for Kenya. Evening arrival at Nairobi s Jomo Kenyata International Airport, where we are met and escorted to the Park Inn by Radisson Hotel. Balance of the evening to rest up after the long trip. Park Inn by Radisson. The Park Inn by Radisson is a newer hotel, located approximately 14 miles from the airport, and about three miles from the city center. The hotel offers trendy rooms with free wi-fi, hairdryer, and complementary coffee and tea. You ll also have free access to the fitness center and plunge pool. OUR ITINERARY June 7 - Thursday Nairobi - Samburu National Reserve After breakfast, drive north from Nairobi, across the equator, to the Samburu National Reserve, arriving at Samburu Sopa Lodge in time for lunch. Enjoy an afternoon game drive. Samburu is Born Free country, and home to some rarely found species, including Samburu s Special Five (the reticulated giraffe, long-necked gerenuk, Somali ostrich, Grevy s zebra, and the beisa oryx) found only north of the equator. In addition, elephants, hippos, warthogs, Kirk s dik-diks, impalas, and Grant s gazelles are common. It also may be possible to see cheetahs and lions. A great variety of birds are found here as well! This afternoon our naturalist, James, will take us to visit one of several conservation projects in the area. If time permits, we ll also get in a guided nature and bird walk. Samburu Sopa Lodge. (B,L,D) (Approx transit time: 4 hours)
3 Samburu Sopa Lodge. This lodge is located inside the Samburu National Reserve. It s located high on a hill, providing panoramic views of the Samburu hills and scrub. The 15 cottages, each with two bedrooms, surround a waterhole, which attracts a wide variety of animals. The cottages are designed in a style to resemble the Samburu housing. Each room features an en suite bathroom. If you have the time, take advantage of the swimming pool. Wi-fi is available in the lounge area. June 8 - Friday Samburu National Reserve Rise early today for a short visit to a Samburu village to observe their customs and traditions. Then spend the rest of the day in the Samburu National Reserve, including morning and late afternoon game drives. The Samburu landscape is a contrast of very dry scrub and lush palm-lined oases. Large baboon troops feed close to the river, out of range of crocodiles basking on nearby sand banks. You may even see a leopard in the branches of a nearby acacia tree. A special highlight will be a visit to the Samburu Elephant Research Camp. Samburu Sopa Lodge. (B,L,D) June 9 - Saturday Samburu - Ol Pejeta Conservancy After breakfast drive south towards the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Along the way we ll enjoy magnificent views across the bush of the snowcapped peak of Mt. Kenya. Ol Pejeta is a privately held, 90,000-acre conservancy, situated between the foothills of the Aberdares and Mt. Kenya. Arrive in time for lunch at the nearby Kongoni Camp, our home for the next two nights. An afternoon game drive is planned in the private sanctuary, which is home to the Big Five (the endangered black and white rhino, leopard, elephant, buffalo and lion). Notably, it is home to the largest population of Black Rhinos in east Africa, as well as eland, baboons, and oryx, as well as many bird species. Kongoni Camp Nanyuki. (B,L,D) (Approx Transit time: 3 hours) Kongoni Camp Nanyuki Located very close to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, and about one mile outside of the town of Nanyuki, Kongoni Camp features 21 rooms, surrounded by gardens and a wooded area, and offers free wi-fi, a heated swimming pool, a spa, restaurant and bar. June 10 - Sunday Ol Pejeta Conservancy A full day visit to Ol Pejeta will allow us to make several special visits in the conservancy. Offering one of the highest wildlife densities in Kenya, and a higher wildlife-to-acre ratio than any Kenyan national park, the conservancy offers sanctuary to a number of endangered species, most notably the rare Grevy s zebra and the Jackson s hartebeest, as well as the black rhino. A special visit is planned to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, home to 36 chimpanzees, and the only one of its kind in Kenya. You ll visit Morani - the tame rhino, and the Visitors Information Center. Along with the visit to the Sanctuary, we ll also plan other visits. If possible, we ll make a visit to see some of the work being done in the area, and supported by the Columbus Zoo. In particular, a project by Ngulu D. Stephen, to rebuild a perimeter fence that was washed away by recent flooding, and a visit to the Little Blue Society, which is attempting to control the crop-raiding behavior of African elephants. For an additional fee, you may wish to participate in an optional night game drive. Kongoni Camp Nanyuki. (B,L,D) June 11 - Monday Ol Pejeta Conservancy - Lake Naivasha National Park After breakfast we proceed toward Lake Naivasha. Along the way we ll stop at Thomson Falls, discovered by Scottish geologist Joseph Thomson in We ll arrive at the Lake Naivasha Sopa Lodge in time for lunch. The highlight of the day will be an afternoon boat ride on Lake Naivasha, and a walking safari on Crescent Island, one of the few places on earth where one can wander on foot amidst wild animals - there are no predators. Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake in the Kenya section of Africa s Great Rift Valley, and is located northwest of Nairobi, with the town of Naivasha on its northeastern shore. At 6,200 ft. above sea level, the lake is at the highest point in the Kenyan rift, and is set in a complex geological combination of volcanic rocks and sedimentary deposits from a much larger Pleistocene era lake. Because the outlet for this ancient lake, now called Njorwa Gorge, is today much higher than the lake, the original Lake Naivasha must have indeed been a truly vast expanse of water. The gorge now forms the entrance to the Hell s Gate National Park, which, for obvious reasons, today contains some spectacular examples of water and weather-worn rock formations, as well as an abundance of flora and fauna to include some extremely rare, resident breeding pairs of Lammergeyers, otherwise known as Bearded vultures. The Lake is home to over 400 species of birds, and a sizeable population of hippos, among other animals. Being a freshwater lake, it also has a healthy fish population including Black bass, Tilapia and Crayfish which attract a variety of fish-eating birds, such as Long-Tailed and Great Cormorants, along with Fish Eagles, Pelicans, and various types of Kingfishers. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight. Naivasha Sopa Lodge. (B,L,D) (Approx Transit time: 3 hours)
4 Naivasha Sopa Lodge Located on 120 acres on the shore of Lake Naivasha, the Naivasha Sopa Lodge offers a total of 84 rooms in 21 separate cottages. The main building features a unique artistic design. Two swimming pools are also inviting. In the restaurant, bar, and public areas, free wi-fi is available. In addition to wildlife you may have witnessed on the boat trip to Crescent Island, a number of animals are also frequently seen on the lodge grounds, including Colobus and Vervet monkeys as well as waterbuck. Each evening the hippos emerge from the lake onto the grounds of the lodge to naturally mow the grass! June 12 Tuesday Lake Naivasha - Maasai Mara Game Reserve Depart Lake Naivasha after an early breakfast and drive to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. Along the way enjoy scenic views of the Great Rift Valley. Here we ll spend the next two nights. The Maasai Mara promises to be the wildlife highlight of any Kenyan safari, with vast open spaces, abundant game, and breathtaking sunsets. Late afternoon game drive. Dinner and overnight. Mara Sopa Lodge. (B,L,D). (Approximate transit time: 5 hours) Mara Sopa Lodge The Mara Sopa Lodge consists of 50 cottages. Each cottage has two bedrooms. Each bedroom features a king or queen beds, ensuite bathroom, a hairdryer, and a veranda offering views over the gardens. In addition to the dining room, the main areas include the dining room, swimming pool, and three bars. June 13 - Wednesday Maasai Mara Game Reserve Spend the entire day in the Maasai Mara, Kenya s most popular game sanctuary, where you will have the best opportunity of spotting the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino and elephant). You can opt to go out with picnic lunch boxes. to spend most of the day in the park. coming back to the lodge late afternoon, or you can have an early morning pre-breakfast game drive, and another one late afternoon. There will also be an optional visit (additional cost) to a local Maasai village. Mara Sopa Lodge. A day room will be provided for you at the Weston Hotel, which features a heated pool, spa, and three restaurants. Enjoy a farewell dinner this evening at the famous Carnivore Restaurant. Bid a fond farewell to your driver/guides and naturalist, and proceed back to the airport for a KLM flight bound for Amsterdam. Weston Hotel (Day Rooms).
