1 SNOOPY S SANTEE TIMES Ordeal Edition MAY 19, 2016 VOLUME 2016, NUMBER 5 BOARD MEMBERS Chiefs Corner Chief: Kyle Recker chief@santee.wiatava.org EVC: Russel De Los Reyes evc@santee.wiatava.org Treasurer: Logan Ueno treasurer@santee.wiatava.org Secretary: Owen Pearce secretary@santee.wiatava.org Vigil Chief: Taylor Ramirez vigilchief@santee.wiatava.org Camp Promo: Trevor Geraghty camppromo@santee.wiatava.org Indian Affairs: Chris Panting indianaffairs@santee.wiatava.or OA Rep: Owen Marubayashi oarep@santee.wiatava.org We always say that we re going to try something new, but do we truly mean that and go out and try something new? This month I challenge not only the new candidates of our Brotherhood, but everyone in the chapter, lodge, family, and community to actually try something new. Not only try something new once, but try something new many times. At our Downhill meeting, Mr. Johnson and I were talking to two new candidates and they were interested in the Order of the Arrow, but weren t sure exactly where or what they could do to be even more involved than just a simple ordeal honor member not that there is anything wrong with that. One of the boys then said that he had native heritage and Mr. Johnson and I both looked at each other and knew exactly what he should try ceremonies. Now, I know what you may be thinking it s just acting, but in fact, it s not that at all. Ceremonies is actually a fun way of learning more about the heritage and history of the Order while bonding with your fellow brothers in your chapter. So, with that story about our new candidates, I encourage you to try something new in the chapter, go for a position in the chapter or lodge, become your Troop OA Rep, or be a part of a committee. Activities: Nick Morgan activities@santee.wiatava.org Service: Chris Hall service@santee.wiatava.org For More Information visit: santee.wiatava.org Have Questions about the Order of the Arrow? About Santee Chapter? Feel free to shoot me an , give me a call, or talk to me at a meeting or event. 2 Calendar June Board & Chapter Meeting July Board & Chapter Meeting August Board & Chapter Meeting SSRLV September Board & Chapter Meeting Fall Oso Lake October Conclave (Tentative) 20 Board & Chapter Meeting November Lodge Leadership SSRLV 17 Chapter Banquet December Chapter Officer Training Council Service Center 21 Chapter Banquet January Wiatava Lodge Banquet February Council Service Center March Indian Affairs Oso Lake Board Meetings start at 6:30 PM Chapter Meetings start at 7:30 PM Board & Chapter Meetings held at Holy Cross Lutheran Church: 4321 W Cerritos Ave, Cypress, CA Frequently Asked Questions What is the Order of the Arrow? The Order of the Arrow (OA) is the national honor society of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). It uses American Indian-styled traditions and ceremonies to bestow recognition on scouts selected by their peers as best exemplifying the ideals of Scouting. Who Is Eligible to join the OA (Order of the Arrow)? Scouts and Scouters under the age of 21 are elected to the Order by their fellow unit members, following approval by the Scoutmaster or Varsity team Coach. Adults over the age of 21 need to be nominated. What does the name Wiatava mean? Wiatava is the Cupeño Indian name for what we now know as Lost Valley. The word is translated into Valley of the Oaks. Wiatava is the Order of the Arrow Lodge for Orange County Council What is Santee? To explain this, it s probably best to explain the organization of the Order of the Arrow. First, there is the national Order of the Arrow. The national OA splits into regions, of which ours is the Western Region, which covers the Western states. Then, the region splits into sections, of which ours is W4S. The sections then split into lodges (which reflect the Boy Scout councils), of which we are in Wiatava Lodge. Lodges then split into chapters (which reflect the Boy Scout districts), hence Santee Chapter. When and where are the chapter meetings? Santee Chapter Meetings are the third Thursday of the Month at 7:30 PM at Holy Cross Lutheran Church at 4321 Cerritos Ave Cypress, CA Who can attend the chapter meetings? Anyone elected to the Order of the Arrow is welcome to attend. However, only dues-paid members will have a voice. Parents of new members are also welcome to attend. What is Pow-wow? An annual event put on by Wiatava Lodge where all the chapters come together for fun and competition. Similar in style to a camp-o-ree, Arrowmen from the chapters compete in sporting events and other games and competitions. What is a Conclave? It is the most fun crammed into one weekend that you can ever imagine! Our Conclave has hundred of Arrowmen from the 4 lodges that make up our Section. There is tons of fellowship & competition at this event such as: Sports, Campfires, Crackerbarrels, Patch trading, a Patch Auction, Ceremony Competitions, Indian Dance Competitions, The Quest, Training, and great food! This is one OA Event you do not want to miss.
3 What do the different arrows on the sashes mean? They represent your honor level in the Order of the Arrow. Throughout your OA journey, you will be given a chance to receive three honors. These honors are often confused with the Boy Scout ranks. There are both similarities and differences between honors and ranks. Like ranks, you have to get the honors in order. However, ranks show achievement, whereas honors show dedication. So what are these three honors? They are Ordeal, Brotherhood, and Vigil. Ordeal Honor You become an Ordeal Honor member once you complete your first OA Ordeal. At your Ordeal, you will be given a sash with a red arrow. The sash changes as you receive the three honors, so a basic red arrow distinguishes one as Ordeal. Once you are Ordeal, you are allowed to participate in Ceremonies other than Brotherhood and Vigil ceremonies. Becoming Ordeal is a sign of your troop s opinion on your dedication to the ideals of Scouting. The troop elected you to become an OA candidate because they felt that you put forth an effort to follow the Scout Oath and Law, and observe cheerful service. Brotherhood Honor You must wait ten months after your first Ordeal before you can become a Brotherhood Honor member. To become a Brotherhood Hoonor member, you must attend a Brotherhood Ordeal. After attending a Brotherhood Ordeal, you receive a new sash. This one looks the same as the one you ve already received, with the exception of a red bar at each end of the arrow. Once a Brotherhood Honor member, you may serve in Brotherhood ceremonies. Becoming Brotherhood is a sign of your own opinion on your dedication to the ideals of Scouting. You have decided to show everyone who sees your new sash how devoted you really are to the OA and its ideals. Vigil Honor Two years (or more) after you receive your Brotherhood Honor, you may find yourself elected by other OA members to the OA s highest honor, Vigil. You will find that most major figures in Scouting and the OA are, in fact, Vigil Honor, so you know this is a great honor. After being elected by fellow OA members to be a Vigil Honor candidate, you can attend a final Ordeal, the Vigil Ordeal. Once you have completed this, you find yourself with a new Vigil name (often picked to suit the candidate) and a new sash. The Vigil sash looks like the Brotherhood sash, with the exception of a triangle in the middle of the arrow. Once you are a Vigil Honor member, you can participate in Vigil ceremonies. The Vigil Honor shows that other OA members, who adhere to the same ideals of service as you do, feel that you are devoted to the causes of Scouting (and its ideals), the OA (and its ideals), and the concept of cheerful service. What next? So after you finish your ordeal weekend, you will be a full member of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting s honor society. You will receive your sash, and will be encouraged to wear it at all OA events. We d love to have you get involved too. We have Chapter meetings monthly, where we do fun activities, and crafts, and always have a delicious snack. We have a ceremonies team which performs dances and ceremonies for Ordeal, Pow-wow, Courts of Honor, Blue and Golds and more. Need a leadership position for rank advancement? Become an Order of the Arrow Rep. This position is responsible for bringing back info from the OA and letting your troop s Arrowmen know about the happenings, and encouraging them to participate in the OA. Still have a question? Check out our website at Feel free to any of the officers (on the first page). Also feel free to contact our Chapter Chief: Kyle Recker by phone or (714) krecker0200@gmail.com

5 Hello Santee Brothers! A Message from the Treasurer We had an amazing Star Fleet Trading Post at Camporee. I would like to send a big Thank you to my adviser Mr. Geraghty and Arrowman Brandon Sasaki from Troop 578 for staffing the trading post. Also another warm and sincere word of wanishi (Lenni Lenape for thank you ) to Mrs. Hight for her generous donation of an array of delicious lollipops. Those lollipops were a big hit. We had a profitable trading post netting over $450.00! I would like to get feedback on what we sold at the trading post on what you liked, what you didn t like and what you would like to see for next year. Membership dues are past due. (Ordeal Candidates, dues were included in your $65 payment, so you are paid) Brothers, it s imperative that if you haven t paid your annual $18 dues you must settle that payment immediately. Technically if you re not a paid up member you cannot wear the lodge flap on your uniform. For those who have paid in a timely manner, thank you for your continued support to the chapter and lodge. Please see either myself or the adviser to the treasurer, Mr. Geraghty at the next chapter meeting. Fundraiser: We will be having a red ribbon shirt fundraiser. More information to follow. Also Russel de los Reyes did a great job as Allowat Sakima, the Chief of the Fire at Camporee. Yours in brotherhood, Logan Ueno, Santee Treasurer
6 2016 Camporee & Webelosree Our 2016 Theme was Space, the Final Orange Frontier. We had a rip roaring great time at our District CAMPOREE & WEBELOSREE over the weekend of April 22-24th, We offered 11 events for Boy Scouts and 8 events for WEBELOS which included rifle shooting, BB-gun, archery, tomahawk throw, sling shot, fire building, pan cake making & flipping, orienteering, shelter building, first aid, A-frame building and walking, save the red shirt, tent setup, and two liter bottle rocket launching! The WEBELOS learned their event skills in the morning and repeated the events in the afternoon for scoring. We changed venues this year to be able to incorporate traditional Scout skills such as rifle shooting and archery as well as to bring back some traditional activities and offer a new camping experience with real wood fire building contests and an evening wood burning campfire program. We had some great Packs and Troops participate this year including: Packs 295, 620, 658, 660, 662, 936 and Troops 4, 295, 314, 440, 490, 578, 642, 650, 658, 660, 671, 280, 1019, Our Youth Camporee Chairman, Brandon Hight led the Friday evening cracker barrel with the youth and adult leaders of the Troops and Packs and we conducting patrol/den flag judging Friday evening after our camp wide Taco dinner which was included with admission. We fed over five hundred people Friday night! Saturday morning we had a great opening Flag Ceremony conducted by Troop 440. Our Youth Camporee Chairman, Brandon Hight welcomed the Scouts and communicated the event specifics, upcoming skit tryouts, Golden Spoon cooking, and the evening campfire program. Our events ran from 9AM until 4PM. We had a great Golden Spoon competition with Patrols and Dens competing against each other with surprise foods and working independently as teams to prepare the best cooking experience possible using a variety of cooking methods. All patrols and dens received enough food to feed a patrol size of eight members with pork chops, potatoes, banana squash, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, mango, onion, cabbage, and red velvet cake mix. The units used dutch ovens, foil cooking with charcoal, camping stoves, and camping ovens. We had some great chili too! Four Troops provided their own chili entries as the adults were not to be out done by the youth Golden Spoon! Our Saturday evening Campfire was emceed by Kevin Stutzke and Christian De Christianson. We had a variety of entertaining skits followed by our Order of the Arrow call-out ceremony. Santee chapter welcomed several new Ordeal members to the chapter. Following the Call-out ceremony, Troop 295 conducted a flag retirement with David Barton, Adult Camporee Advisor. Following the campfire, the youth and adult leaders participated in a delicious cracker-barrel to discuss and prepare for the next morning s closing ceremony and activities. Next it was movie time with Wallee. Sunday morning Scouts-Own was inspirational with Senior District Executive James Styzenski facilitating song and prayer. Our closing ceremony congratulated all of the participants, Troops, Packs, Posts, and volunteers. We acknowledged that we all learned new skills and had a lot of fun learning and/or improving other skills!
