Volunteers needed see Geoff s comment. In addition to Tournament Organisers for the Whitefriars shoot and the November Indoor shoot, I need an assistant secretary in case of illness. I cannot last for ever. All these jobs can be done by anyone and you will be shown what to do when you volunteer!!!! Coaching Reference Point Guns have two sights along the length of the gun which can be lined up with the target; archers only have one sight and must find another way to line up. Even if you sight along the arrow it is not in line with your eye. Thus you need a reference point. I believe the best position is the tip of your nose, the centre of your chin and index finger under chin bone. This gives a very positive position to give a consistent shot, provided :- You keep the string firmly in contact with your chin. You keep your index finger or platform in contact under the jaw. Your thumb is tucked into the palm of your hand and then your shoulder is pulling your arm correctly. Now aim making sure that the arrow does not creep forward (ask a friend to watch from behind). If it does you are probably allowing your arm to go forward so the pressure is off your shoulder and on to your arm. Back on your shoulder (back)?? Now expand both shoulders outward (difficult bit) and release!! Consequently it will not be a record status shoot as the paperwork for this was not done in time. It will be held at Vigo on the 24 th August as last year but as a non record shoot. If no one is prepared to be TO then we will lose

3 one of our money making tournaments. Also breaking a tradition that has been maintained for some considerable time. On the same lines there is no TO for the Autumn Worcester/Portsmouth shoot. If the membership wants us to hold these events then we need your help to support them. Members not on the web will be getting a hard copy with the Nocking Point. RECURVE/BAREBOW TUNING!!!!! Yes bow tuning is on the agenda, Saturday March 29 th 10:00 till 4:00. a great opportunity to get your bow set-up and tuned for the new outdoor season. Ken Bearman has agreed to be there for the day advising and passing on his knowledge on equipment set-up. This great opportunity comes with a charge of 5/head, part to club and Ken s expenses. There has to be a limit on the numbers as it takes time to sort each persons kit, that number will be 12, so get in early. If you are interested please contact me, with cash in hand, to secure your place. One thing from Ken is, if you come please bring all your gear, all your arrows currently used or not, 2 nd limbs, 2 nd button, glues, arrow rests, nocks and materials for making nocking points. (in fact your archery tools and bits box). There will be fletching jigs to refletch your arrows at the end. Fun Field shoot Unfortunately I picked the worst day for weather again, bad forecast of gales and rain. Some did turn out more in hope than anything else; Barry, Mike Clark and Sue. A - Bare shaft tuning is a tuning method to help prove that the bow and arrows being used are compatible for good grouping. It is no good to just taking your equipment to the field and doing bare shaft tuning. There are many more set-up and tuning procedures to be done before the bare-shaft tuning procedure is carried out. So, make sure your bow is well set-up and tuned to a level that gets good groups before completing the procedure described below. Bare shaft planning test. This test will verify the nocking point height and give a good indication that the pressure button is set close to the optimum compatibility of arrows and bow being used.

5 Once the fletched and un-fletched arrows group together it will be wise to increase the shooting distance. It will depend on the ability of the archer but a distance of 50 or 60 metres should be considered for an experienced archer. Please take note: your ability will depend how tight a group you can obtain. One big problem that can exist if you are not aware of it. I have seen archers who have had a rogue arrow that does not group with the rest. I have seen archers strip the fletchings off and say I ll use this one for my bare shaft. If this arrow did not group with the other shafts when it was fletched it certainly will not group when the fletchings have been removed. The fault with this arrow must be found and put right before using the arrow again. Q2 What part of an archer s technique affects accuracy the most? A - The most important thing is consistency i.e. everything an archer does when shooting a bow must be the same for every shot. Some people say there are 10 steps when shooting a bow but I believe there are many more. I have listed 13 steps below that the novice archer should follow. Stance: Hand position on the bow: The bow Arm: Nocking an Arrow: Fingers on the String: The Preparation Line; The Draw: A Consistent Draw length: The Anchor Point (Draw Reference Point): The Draw Force Line: Aiming: The Release: The Follow Through: As the novice develops other elements will need considering. Of all the above I would say the big downfall of many novices is producing a consistent bow hand position, draw length and anchor point. But, for the developing archer I would say that the release is one of the areas that most archers have a problem with. Getting a good and efficient release will help with the grouping of the arrows and in turn produce better scores.
