7 7 A Statement Regarding Capital Projects for the Club A message from DMSC President George Taylor Your Board of Directors has been discussing a number of Capital Projects to benefit the Club since June of 2017 given that the Board knew that the Club would begin to receive substantial income from Marcelleus Shale royalties beginning in the fall of Several of those projects have been implemented including the "Blue Sky" Baffle System for the Upper Pistol Range, increasing the height of the bunker and improving the limestone cover for the bunker on the Marsico Rifle Range, purchasing an additional Zero Turn Mower, sealing the entrance road and Garage Roof replacement. These purchases and projects undertaken in 2017 total in excess of $42,000. The Board is considering other major investments in the Club. Those investments include major upgrades and potential expansion to the indoor range; Side Baffling and Bunkers on the south side of the Upper Pistol Range; construction of a new club house; replacement of the roofing for the existing club house; range and roadway drainage improvements; expansion of the garage and improvements including heating, etc. As funds become available, these projects will be bid and initiated. Since the October membership meeting (and as published in the October 2017 Sportsmen's Notes) the Board began discussing the concept of constructing a new clubhouse with the membership. During the November annual meeting there was a lively discussion regarding this project. As of now, no final decision has been reached regarding this project. During the next several months, we will hold additional discussions regarding this project at each of our monthly membership meetings. We welcome any comments that you may have by sending an to Ted Hildabrand (tkhaquariusnetwk@gmail.com), understanding that no final project scope has been finalized. Please see the attached document (pages 8-10)for more information about this topic.

11 11 Suggested Books to Read and Club Programs Theodore Hildabrand November 2017 Several members have asked me again recently about the books I referenced in our October program on US Military Rifle History. If you missed it, your bad as Dave Willard made a fantastic presentation on the 03 & 03A3 rifle. Dave brought at least ten of these rifles to the club for the program. Bruce Long also made an excellent presentation on the 1917 US Enfield as did John Tupta on the M1. We may just ask Dave and possibly the others to repeat the programs in the future. During my presentation on the M16 / AR15, I made several references to some books I recommended for reading. These books are as follows: Dereliction of Duty by HR McMaster You should recognize the author as he is our current National Security Advisor. McMaster is a combat veteran officer of the Gulf Wars. A great cabinet selection by our President Trump! The book discusses in detail the failures and lies as told by RS McNamara, LBJ and General Maxwell Taylor. However, the problems were started by JFK who appointed McNamara. You will be reminded about JFK s complicity in the assassination of the Diem brothers the political leaders from South Vietnam from the 60s. You misguided liberals; sort of makes Russia s Putin look like a choir boy. Considering that the Tet Offensive of 68 will reach its 50th anniversary in February of next year it is an appropriate read for A must read if you are a Viet Nam Vet. The AR-15 Complete Owner s Guide by Scott Duff and Walt Kuleck Some of the younger members may not be aware that Scott Duff was a past speaker at our club. The meeting room at the club had more members in attendance in any function that I can remember in my 22+ years as a member. The autographed signature book was a ticket win from the program. Chapter 3 Selection is an interesting read if you are a hunter; see page 65. I am a real history buff and if you like military history I would also recommend the following other great books: Mantle of Command by Nigel Hamilton - A great reference to FDR & WW 2 and the history of interface between FDR and our military leaders. Also, good references to the political climate of the times and the FDR relationship with Winston Churchill. A little tidbit of history not commonly known today is that Winston s mother was an American. Truman Biography by David McCullough Good insight into American politics from a county in Missouri to the White House, VE Day and Korea. He made the right calls at the right time! The Last Lion by Manchester and Reid Biography of Winston Churchill and his actions taken during WW2. American Ulysses by RC White Probably are most misunderstood president but one of the best during a difficult period in our history. Colonel Roosevelt by E Morris Biography of what was one of if not our greatest president. Good reads for this winter! Tight groups, Ted

12 12 PSRL Update Shaking the rust off from all of that Thanksgiving turkey and stuffing, your Dormont-Mt. Lebanon rifle team improved to 5-1 picking up a win over Murrysville. We were missing a number of people last night but still turned in a very respectable team score. Here are the results: December 6, 2017 vs. Murrysville Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Dean B. Trew Matt Piatt Tom Benedict Curtis Turner Miles Ford Fritz Hempelmann Jason Allshouse Ali Rovers Cassidy Turner Dave Willard Murrysville Katie Frye Ray Harvey John Funk Joe Arone Congratulations to Tom Benedict, turning in a solid performance last night. We shot kneeling really well as a team last night, including 100s from Tom and Dave Willard. These two guys will be going head-to-head again this afternoon as Mt. Lebanon H.S. and Bethel Park have a WPIAL rifle match Good luck coaches! 1171 An interesting note, Ali Rovers and Jason Allshouse tied in every position, with s prone being the tie-breaker. We will have practice this Sunday at 6PM before the 8:30 Steelers game, and next week we will be at Allegheny, and then off again for two weeks. Good Shooting, Everyone! Dean

13 13 America s Rifle Challenge (ARC) Program Information for 2018 The ARC program begins its third year at the club, and DMSC is proud to sponsor a more robust match schedule for Just What is America s Rifle Challenge? you may ask. With the growing interest in the AR platform, the NRA established a unique training and competition event that goes far beyond typical target practice. Participants can practice defensive skills ranging from 100 yards down to 7 yards, shooting at multiple targets, using all 4 shooting positions, barricades, and use of support side firing. The following information describes upcoming events that incorporate marksmanship, challenge, training, and a whole lot of fun. While the program is designed with the AR platform in mind, any magazine fed semi-automatic rifle will suffice. NOTE: the schedule for exact dates is forthcoming as the 2018 club calendar is in the process of construction. Due to the more complex nature of ARC matches, all participants must pre-register via . The number of shooters will be limited per event based upon a first-come, first-served basis. Check upcoming newsletters and bulletin boards for important match information. AR CLINIC - this event is designed for shooters of all ages (12+). NRA Certified Instructors and RSO s will provide instruction on safe gun handling, introduction to action rifle skills, dry fire practice, and several stages of live fire. If you are new to match competition or AR ownership, and are looking for opportunities to develop familiarity with the AR platform, then the AR CLINIC is tailor made for you. BASIC MATCH this event is an introduction to action rifle shooting. Participants learn match protocols, practice marksmanship skills, and develop confidence all while maintaining a comfortable pace. All live fire is conducted concurrently. If you want to get started in this style of competition or just try it, then the BASIC MATCH will provide the opportune springboard. ADVANCED MATCH - this event allows shooters to hone individual marksmanship skills with the AR platform. All live fire is conducted individually using a shot timer. Combining marksmanship with speed provides the basis of scoring for the event. Stages involve a variety of movement, firing positions, target locations, barricade usage, and magazine reloading. Prerequisite: prior participation in a DMSC Basic Match, other action rifle course, or job experience (as determined by the match director). ARC PLUS (2-gun) this event provides a more robust level of competition and enjoyment. With stages similar to those in the Advanced Match, participants combine the use of both rifle and pistol. A mixture of stages entailing rifle only, pistol only, and transition of one firearm to the other, create a very interesting, challenging, and exhilarating match. Pistols must be a semi-automatic, caliber 9mm or larger, and maintained in an external holster. The rifle, pistol and necessary magazines are all carried throughout each live fire stage. Prerequisite: participation in a DMSC sponsored Advanced Match.
