FAST LION FACTS Team Taronga is For the Wild because a future without wildlife is not an option. We believe that we not only have a responsibility but an obligation, both locally and globally, to protect wildlife and habitats that are increasingly under threat. Name African Lion Scientific Name Panthera leo Conservation Status Vulnerable THREATS Humans and loss of habitat Speed HUNTING Lions can run up to 60km/hr. Females do most of the hunting and work together to capture prey. Males are equally capable hunters with lone male lions easily able to catch and kill an adult zebra. The entire pride feeds on the kill, however the males often get to eat first before the females and cubs. LOUD ROAR A lion s roar can be heard for over 8km. SOCIAL CATS Lions are the only truly social big cat. They live in prides of up to 40 individuals. All Photos: Rick Stevens

WILD THREATS The King of the jungle, the majestic lion is regionally extinct in 7 African countries. Lion population have experienced a 43% population decline in the past 21 years and it is estimated that only 20,000 39,000 lions remain in the wild. HUMANS LOSS OF HABITAT Humans are pushing lions out of their habitats. Exploding human populations and the resulting growth in agriculture, settlements and roads is having a devastating effect on lions. Due to habitat loss, lions are being forced into close quarters with humans. This creates human lion conflict. This coupled with a decrease in their natural prey, causes lions to attack livestock. In turn, farmers often retaliate and kill lions. HUMANS POACHING Lions are being killed in rituals of bravery, as hunting trophies, and for their perceived medicinal and magical powers. Photo: Rick Stevens

Photo: Rick Stevens LIONs Taronga Taronga Western Plains Zoo is home to a pride of 8 lions: father Lazarus, mother Maya, two sub adult female cubs Makaeba and Zuri born in February 2015, and four male lion cubs born in November Karoo, Virunga, Sheru and Bakari. The four brothers can often be seen romping around together on exhibit and are especially active in the mornings. The cubs routinely play as siblings, stalking and chasing each other (and mother Maya!) through the trees. They are regularly pushing the friendship with Maya, their father Lazarus, and each other - pouncing on tails, hiding, and jumping on one another, paws outstretched! At Taronga Western Plains Zoo our lions are fed a wide variety of meats including rabbit, beef, kangaroo, and chicken. They love eggs, as they were brought up with them. It is a funny sight to see the egg yolk dripping down the side of their mouth when he has an egg inside. Keepers spray essential oils like sandalwood and ylang ylang around their exhibit, as well as provide spices and fresh herbs for enrichment. Their favourite sensory items are actually elephant and zebra faeces. They can be found sniffing them, rolling in them, and even sometimes eating them! The pride at Taronga Western Plains Zoo are sure to enjoy the vast, open space in the 3.5-hectare enclosure at African Lion Pride Lands, a new exhibit where visitors can expect a captivating experience with a pride of eight Lions roaming their habitat, visible from a replica African Masai village setting. Taronga Zoo Sydney also has plans to develop an African Savannah exhibit, which will see beautiful lions return to Taronga Zoo. The new exhibit will allow extensive roaming areas in a Savannah setting for Lions, Giraffe, Zebra, Ostrich, Meerkats and Fennec Fox species and is due to open in Our hope is that by engaging our Zoo visitors with this amazing species we will create more advocates for the wild that will join us in the fight to protect our natural world. Photo: Rick Stevens

Taronga s Conservation Work Taronga supports Lions the wild Taronga supports a number of wildlife conservancies that protect lions and other African wildlife, by funding ranger patrols, educating communities in Kenya through the Northern Rangelands Trust in the Biliqo-Bulesa Conservancy, as well as research in Botswana to help address the human-lion conflict Taronga also supports Conservation in South Luangwa which have critical ground based and aerial anti-poaching patrols in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia. An African patrol unit Proactive and reactive patrols are still by far the most effective way to protect wildlife from being killed. There is hope. Taronga, our partners, our supporters and our communities play a vital role in the future where wildlife can thrive in balance. You too can help! By running with Team Taronga in the City2Surf, and supporting the Taronga Foundation who provides funding to make all of this happen. Photo: Gary Ramage Anti-poaching patrols are the most basic requirement of any protected area, and without patrols lions and other vulnerable species will continue to be poached.

FUNDRAISING Lions Photo: Rick Stevens Your fundraising efforts are vital in the fight for a wild future for Lions. Taronga is working collaboratively with organisations in Africa such as the Northern Rangelands Trust in the Biliqo-Bulesa Conservancy, as well as research in Botswana to help address the human-lion conflict. To fundraise for Taronga simply visit taronga.org.au/fundraising FUNDRAISINg TIPS Personalise your fundraising page. Share your story and your passion of Lions, tell your supporters WHAT you are doing, WHY you are fundraising for Taronga and WHAT you are hoping to achieve. The first donation sets the marker for the rest. Donate to your own page to show friends you are engaged in the cause and want them to be too. Have a goal, share your goal. Setting a fundraising goal keeps you motivated, and lets your supporters know what you want to achieve and that you need their support to do this! Spread the word. Tell your friends, your family and your work colleagues. Share your fundraising page on social media, and ask your friends to share your page as well. Every share helps. Also don t forget, personal s are still to this day, the most effective tool! Consider holding your own event. Hold a raffle (get in touch for potential prizes) or lion movie night (e.g. The Lion King, Born Free). Thank your donors. A simple thank you can go a long way. Let your donors know that their donation has been received and is greatly appreciated. $35 $75 $200 $250 $1000 Taronga also contributes to the following Lion conservation projects: Global conservation Project: Wild Carnivore Management in Tanzania Large carnivores such as lions and African Wild dogs are under threat from conflict with humans in their natural habitats. To ensure these species survive, we must resolve issues in areas where populations would otherwise have a chance of long term survival. This project will improve local livestock husbandry in order to reduce losses to predators, as well as educate villagers about carnivore ecology. Conservation Insurance Breeding Program: International These breeding programs are for species with a ICUN threat Status (Extinct in the Wild (EW) Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN) and Vulnerable (V). The breeding programs are managed to ensure that the species are managed at a high genetic level, to provide a healthy and viable insurance population for the future. NEED SUPPORT? Give us a call or drop us an . We d love to help you on your successful fundraising journey! Lisa Peters Fundraising Events T (02) E lpeters@zoo.nsw.gov.au could help supply a Lion s daily feed of raw beef on the bone could help cover the annual cost of dental care for a lion at Taronga s African Lions funds an anti-poaching patrol unit in Africa for a week could help supply a Lion s daily feed of raw beef on the bone and kangaroo carcass for one week for treatment drugs and equipment for animals caught in snares in Zambia
